We were immediately embraced by this warm and close-knit congregation. I was very impressed, for example, when the education minister quickly approached us to give my 5 year-old daughter some paper and crayons and invite her to the separate program they have for youth. The services have a peaceful and communal feel, punctuated by excellent music that draws on jazz rhythms and improvisation. I believe that our time turned out to be an excellent one to get involved (we ultimately joined in November), because the church has a dynamic new senior minister, Todd Smiedendorf. Todd takes care to connect personally with every member of the congregation and his sermons are reflective, honest, and thought-provoking. My wife and I have liberal Christian views and were members of a Unitarian church in Washington, DC before we moved to Denver. Todd manages to take a more biblical approach than we've been accustomed to while asking questions and posing stories and "lessons" that have broad applicability to a variety of spiritual paths. As importantly, Wash Park UCC walks the talk. The church is very active in the community and provides members with a variety of opportunities for service. It is also proactively welcoming to the LGBT community and people of all backgrounds and views. My family could never be a part of a church that doesn't reflect these values. I'd recommend Wash Park UCC to anyone seeking a community that is close to the Spirit and living a life that honors that relationship.

Not being particularly religious or spiritual but finding the opportunity to make additional social…read moreconnections I went to this church with my partner Steven(who is spiritual). Everyone is friendly and we have made some friends here. It is great how socially progressive the church is and is always nice to go to a church where people don't seem to judge you. The problem with this one is that there seems to be a flux of worshippers that come and go. Some people say they have issues with the church and go somewhere else. I guess that goes without saying many churches are often that way. However then the church gets its own status quo shake ups with the staff and Rev. Emily has(or wants to or is encouraged to) to quit or is encouraged to resign or whatever. Many people leave because she is gone and so on. It is sad to hear such internal politics in such a socially progressive church seems to mirror what happens in most churches. OF COURSE there are changes to be expected with church staff and people come and go but nevertheless thing ending in bad blood in this kind of setting is not becoming to the worshippers or to reputation. Time went on and my partner and I attempted to reconnect with Rev. Emily on Facebook since we were so fond of her in which we did reestablish connections for a very brief time until she severed the friend link with us. This action seems kind of hypocritical since she is still 'friends' with many other people that went to see her when she worked at this church and gave us the feel of alienation. In the end we both feel very alienated not only from the bureaucratic politics that surfaced in this progressive church and from the former pastor. Steven, my partner is still trying to fill that void that was created(despite us moving to another town as well) by the church and everything that went on there. Again since I do not get quite so into religion like he does it is not quite as upsetting to me but there is a social outlet that is clearly missing even after we have 'shopped' around at other churches. Not to say this place has become hostile to gays and lesbians anyone who wants to try this church SHOULD give it a try and I hope they leave with a better taste in their mouth.

If you're Asian, you know about the Cherry Creek School District. You won't find a Korean-American church closer to Belleview Elementary and CC High. If you're a foodie, Disciple Denver is the right place for you. Lots of passionate discussions and fun outings to delicious places to eat. And in between meals, deep dives into the Christian faith. What do you believe? Why do you believe it? How is it different from other denominations and faiths? Open and honest discussions filled with curiosity and compassion. The fact we joke about how obsessed Korean culture is with guilt and judgement helps us overcome those obstacles (well, at least we try to). I'm a transplant from SoCal and the past few years at Disciple Denver has helped my family transition to life in Colorado. My kids go to Korean School and the AWANA program during the week too. The family community group is great (again, we eat well). The only knock against Disciple Denver? Not enough Lakers and Dodgers fans.

Pastor David Pak strikes that very much needed middle ground between practicality, academic theology, gospel-centeredness, and clarity (haha, frequently breaks it down into 3 parts) that's hard to come by. And of course, sermons are important, but they're not everything. I love the people who go here, too. I'd give some specific shout-outs, but out of fear of forgetting anyone (and in the spirit of keeping this as non-tangential as possible), I'll keep it vague. Praise team is awesome, leadership is always trying to improve, and the congregation has a lot of social diversity and variety...which I'm hoping continues to grow.

Unity on the Avenue is awesome, albeit small (provided you are of the churchy persuasion). There's only one service on Sundays, and it's at 10am. The music is usually great, with several of the congregation members stepping up weekly to be showcased with their singing and/or piano playing. We applaud after (and sometimes during) songs, we dress casually for services, we have a good spread of food after each service. There's hugging and hand-holding during the service typically, so be prepared for the touchy-feelies. Everyone's welcome and treated like family.
