We reach out to our local community with our yearly 5K for mission engaging families in a fun-filled day opening with a 5-k walk/run, culminating in a spring fling community day when families can enjoy activities for kids as well as grownups. We partner with organizations in Wilmington to fight homelessness and support women in transitional housing programs and give urban youth a chance for success. Regionally, we deploy over 75 people (from teens to retirees) per year to work on housing projects in rural Maine and Appalachia and over 30 to Costa Rica and South Africa. We build lasting friendships with our partners in mission and gain as much as we give. We celebrate Gods incredible love. I'm so happy that I found this church. When I moved to the area three years ago, I expected to…read morehave to do a lot of "church shopping" before I found my "church home," but no need - I gave this one a try and have loved it from the first day. This church has something for everyone - Bible study groups, fantastic multi-generational mission trips to places all around the world, various community outreach programs, and a vibrant youth program. Red Clay has wonderful programs for people of all ages, and I feel very fortunate to be part of this exciting community. My kids (ages 9 and under) love Sunday school, singing in the Children's Herald Choir, and Vacation Bible School (VBS) in the summer. I love running in the church's annual Red Clay 5k for Mission to raise money for mission trips (what other church has its own 5k?!). The pastors are fantastic, and I always look forward to their thought-provoking and spiritually enriching sermons. There are so many opportunities to get involved at Red Clay and to meet others who want to celebrate God's love. Such as…read morethis one, which reads: "In 1813 a group of African-American Methodists formed an independent denomination known as the African Union Church. It was the first incorporated religious body in the United States controlled entirely by African-Americans. In 1866 the African Union Church was joined by the First Colored Methodist Protestant Church to form the African Union Methodist Protestant Church. Due in large part to the efforts of Reverend Edward H. Chippey (1825-1900), this denomination experienced a great period of growth in the years following the Civil War. In 1886 this site was purchased for use by church members residing in the Hockessin community. The house of worship that was built here was known as "Chippey Chapel." It was rebuilt in 1896, and the congregation was formally incorporated as Chippey A.U.M.P. Church the following year. After many years of service, the old building was demolished in 1971. Through the hard work and financial support of its members, the construction of the present church was completed in June 1972. The congregation declared its independence in 1995, and in 1996 became formally known as Chippey African Union Methodist Church."
