Trieste Centrale is the terminal station at Trieste city center. It is only a 15-20 minutes' walking distance to the cruise port. The location is convenient. However, this is a fundamental station with almost nothing inside. The station has very few stores and a coffee shop with pizzas and sandwiches available. Perfect for a quick meal or a cup of coffee while waiting for the train. The biggest problem with this station is they have very few chairs in the lobby area for the passengers to sit down and wait for their train. Trieste Centrale is clean, and the area looks safe. This was an easily negotiated, edge of town train station, with no stairs to go up and down. We walked to it from our hotel in under 10 minutes. We were delighted as when we went to buy our return tickets to Venice the smiling young lady spoke perfect English and was able to answer all our travel questions. When you buy tickets you have a window of train times you can take so it's not just jump on any train going your way. So just be alert. And the polite staff are fastidious about checking tickets aboard the train. It was an 100 mile each way journey to Venice Santa Lucia and back at an hour and 15 minutes each way - 15 euro each way per person - 2nd class. No first class offered but the scenic views were priceless. The Trieste station had a fairly big cafe serving a good range of reasonably priced food and drinks and the signage was easily read and followed. If you are more comfortable with technology then there are plenty of machines to buy tickets with a selection of languages available but we do prefer dealing with human beings especially as pleasant as the staff we encountered. Small but functional for getting in and and getting out, it is as good as anywhere to be dropped off late at night after a lengthy train trip. Well, as good as anywhere with no taxis in sight, nothing open, and rain coming down. Luckily, I found a solution. read more

Trieste was my introduction to Italy driving in from Slovenia. It wasn't really the most picturesque impression I could have had, but so it goes. This train station has an impressive entrance. Either restored or has been nicely kept up over the years (one never knows in Europe) I marveled at the ultra high ceilings and all the arches as well as the polished marble. Very 1800's Neo-Roman Classical. Guess that makes sense in Italy! Purchasing our tickets was pretty easy. My one beef, they could have told us that we needed to validate our tickets before boarding. We clearly weren't from Italy and no other country required this. When we were on the train, the conductor was miffed that we hadn't validated and charged us a fine. Thanks for the heads up. Back to before boarding the train... we walked towards the platforms and this whole area of the train station is nothing special and is typical for a smaller train hub. There are a few shops including a grocery store, and the bathrooms have much to be desired. Thankful I only needed the urinal! They were cleaning to floors in the main area so it was pretty loud. The platforms were easy to find and Italy isn't as strict with departure times, but all in all, not a bad train station. read more

Excellent train station in Trieste, a city of 200k residents in northern Italy. It's a clean station that has a bookstore and even a grocer, so you can grab a few snacks and beverages before your journey. It was especially special to arrive at this station because my great-grandfather emigrated to the U.S. from Trieste in 1921.
