From the moment we arrived, it was obvious that every aspect of this family-owned practice has been thoughtfully planned. It truly feels like a labor of love. My senior, very anxious and fearful cat was made comfortable in their cat-only room, creating a calm, stress-free environment for him. I have never seen him so relaxed or interact so well with new people. Every member of the team was kind, compassionate, and genuinely invested in his care. Their assessment was incredibly thorough, and they truly left no stone unturned. As a nurse, I especially appreciated their comprehensive approach, attention to detail, and thoughtful treatment plan. When your pets are younger, care is more routine but as they get older; one of the most important decisions to make is finding a veterinarian you can trust. A little over a year ago I found such a veterinarian; Dr. Ashbaugh at Trident Veterinary Hospital. Trident Veterinary Hospital is family owned and everyone who works there, including his wife Monica, Brittany, and the whole crew, are so friendly and helpful. Dr. Ashbaugh is knowledgeable, thorough, and experienced veterinarian who truly cares about all the pets he treats. He takes the time to explain diagnoses and treatment options and will make a recommendation if asked. He completely answers all your questions enabling you to make the best-informed decisions for your pets. In the past I would spend so much time attempting to research any health issues that came up and figure out what was going on or what can be done on my own. What a relief it is now to have a veterinarian I 100% trust to figure out what's going on and give me the best advice to keep my pets healthy. Dr. Ashbaugh's knowledge, experience, and dedication are evident with every visit where we get exceptional customized care. He listens sincerely to all your concerns first and then puts all his knowledge into finding the best solution. If one thing doesn't work for your individual pet, for whatever reason, he will try something else, until he comes up with the best solution everyone feels comfortable with. One example of how I knew I found the best veterinarian, is that in the years past our dog had been limping on and off, but I was told by other vets that she was fine and I kept getting sent home with no plan to help her even though it was obvious she was in pain. As soon as Dr. Ashbaugh examined her he immediately noticed her left rear leg had significantly atrophied. She ended up needing a TPLO (knee) surgery which was performed by an attending veterinary orthopedist. The clinic is kept meticulously clean and sterile, which is extremely important going into surgery to avoid any chance of infection. Her leg never even swelled the slightest bit and the incision healed perfectly. She was okayed to go back to activities 8 weeks later, and within 6 months she was back to normal and so happy to be back at the beach; her absolute favorite place in the world! Just seeing how happy she is, makes me smile! Another example of how I knew I found the best veterinarian, is that my cat isn't always cooperative when I bring him in for an appointment. In the past I have been told by previous clinics to drug him, which I have not wanted to do because he is sensitive to medications. He has had FIC which means his stress level has to stay low, and now that he is older has borderline CKD, so any medication side effects could be damaging. Knowing this, when my cat had to go in for a dental, Dr. Ashbaugh figured out just the right mixture to enable him to perform the dental while also keeping my cat in a good mood throughout the procedure. The medication wore off reasonably quickly after he came home and there were no side effects! Also, you should know Dr. Ashbaugh provides the best dental I have ever seen! He actually x-rays the teeth, like our human dentists would, so he knows for sure what's going on and won't do any unnecessary work. When my cat came home from his dental at Trident Veterinary Hospital his teeth were not only clean, but sparkling white! I had never seen them that sparkling white in his whole 11 years of being! And you could tell they were feeling good too, because his appetite has been better since. I have also been to Trident Veterinary Hospital for routine check-ups and vaccinations, coughing, bumps and lumps, and anything going on that I was concerned about. Trident had just opened nearby, and their office looked clean and new -- I thought it might be a good option. My kitty was severely constipated and refusing to eat, so I took her in to see Dr. Ashbaugh. After paying $1,400 for blood tests and a full day of fluids -- which did nothing to relieve her suffering -- I realized they were withholding care to squeeze more money out of me. They saw a devoted pet owner and exploited that concern while my kitty continued to suffer. Only after switching to another vet did I realize just how much comfort and care had been denied. I have been taking my elderly cattle dog to Trident for about a year, beginning with urgent dental problems. I am a low intervention dog owner and the dr respected that from day one. He has never pressured me nor tried to upsell. I just had a wellness visit yesterday and wanted to be sure to express my appreciation for the consistency. At each visit, the dr has been calm and unhurried while hearing about my concerns. He is pragmatic and evidenced-based, open to alternative treatments and supplements but not pushy at all. He respects my choices and remembers my preferences. He uses an online pharmacy which works well for getting my dogs anti inflammatory meds auto shipped. I am upset about writing this review, I had written a glowing review I deleted. I thought long and hard about this, but ultimately the reviews are to bring awareness for us as customers so we can make informed decisions. I thought Dr. Ashbaugh was great, and he might be, but my experience at the clinic is anything but... I took my boy to get looked at for his eye and I was concerned he had fainted after I gave him gabapentin, I asked if we could do blood work and I was given a tour of the office, beautiful nice place, but the place is only as good as its staff, the tech drawing blood from my dog stuck the needle 3 or 4 times in his neck not finding his jugular, what angered me was watching her pull on the plunger then push it back without pulling the needle out, that is a no no and extremely dangerous! She was not in the vein as no blood was sucked out, but still you don't push air in... Even I know that. I was partly shocked and partly didn't want to be mean to the poor girl, but it angered me I failed my poor boy by not stopping her right away. Dr. then said he would give it a go and got his blood drawn. I waited the results and he said all was good. I thought ok great! But I am a visual person so when I looked, there were some above normal values and he said it could have been from handling the blood and technical error, but ALT is a liver enzyme and even thou it was not super bad, given that the dog had fainted over something that shouldn't have, to me that was enough to be concerned so I asked if we could do more blood work, set up a time for the next day. I then called and asked if some imaging could be done and we settled on radiographs. The next day I asked Dr, if he could be the one doing the blood draw specially since it's a two draws, one fasting and the other 2 hrs after eating... so he did. I was happy about that, because I almost didn't want to go back... We did the xrays and his liver is enlarged, but Dr was more concerned for the dog's prostate, mind you the liver can kill you faster.... When I paid my bill, there was a charge for the extra blood work which repeated the one from the previous day which Dr claimed could have been "operator error" besides the other test. Dr said he had been extra careful with the blood this time, but it was still the same... I was not aware this was the plan and I just didn't wanna argue so I let it go and paid for it. Dr. said he was sure bile acids test would be normal. I was skeptical... Next day I called to see if the results for the bile acid test was in since they said it would be next day. Nothing, then called again and they said it takes 2 days. Ok well the day after I called and the results were in and Dr would call me about it... finally he calls and said the results were normal, well great! So we had discussed doing an ultrasound because I wanted to do more testing and it was scheduled, then I thought I want a urine test too. I stopped by to get a container and asked to have a copy of the bile salts test... they didn't have a container so they gave me a fecal one said it was the same... well no it ain't, it's way smaller and harder to catch urine. But whatever... I waited no tests sent, I called, then the next day I called again... the office manager Monica Dr's wife answered and said check your spam folder (wow like I didn't) I said it isn't there, she said it would be sent and then added "I hope I don't have to talk to you about this again" And laughed!! I laughed and said oh you are funny, but what I wanted to say is, well if it had been sent I wouldn't have to call repeatedly about it... Cheeky comments when there is no rapport don't land well, but it was whatever until I got the tests results! the results are NOT normal! They are not super bad, but not normal specially he barely ate and mostly protein not a fatty meal. I was fuming! Why would Dr. say otherwise? He said "they are normal, but I'm glad we are doing the ultrasound because I'm concerned for the prostate... " what the hell??? Now I was mad, do you wait until the dog is past the point of no return to be concerned? I don't wanna wait until then that's why I am pushing for more testing and you are telling me they are normal when they are not. Maybe they are not super bad, but his liver is enlarged and he fainted!! Hello??? Anyone there? So I texted the office to cancel the ultrasound, and told her she can then laugh some more about not having to hear from me again. It was not just the cheeky remark, I feel I cannot trust them with my dog's health. I am not calling because I don't have anything else to do, I am concerned for his wellbeing. And you cannot even be trusted with bloodwork! So disappointed I thought I had found a good place to bring all my dogs, but no! So bring yours at your own risk! read more

We had tried out a couple of new vets for our dogs after our last one closed and thankfully we found Dr. Ashbaugh and Trident after reading reviews and social media feedback. Dr. Ashbaugh is incredibly knowledgeable and clearly cares about his four footed patients in the extreme. He took care of our dog shadow's itchy skin and gave us treatment options that were reasonable and well thought out. Prices seem very fair. Their new state of the art facility is just a few miles from I-15 Near the Scripps Poway border and within a few minutes of Penasquitos. They have both dog and cat treatment areas, and are set up for general care, all the way up to surgery and critical care. Veterinarians in recent years seem to be increasingly corporate and dollar focused but you do not get the sense of that at all with Dr. Ashbaugh. Also, the staff is incredibly kind, responsive and competent. I would be absolutely confident entrusting them with the care of our pups. We are in SHOCK and AWE! This may appear like a long tale, but this very special Veterinarian Hospital is worthy of the best review possible... not sure I can do them justice, but I am going to try. My husband and I have owned canines for 49 years of our 52 years together, lived from Indiana to California and traveled every state in between and beyond. Our experiences with veterinarians could fill a few volumes while hitting all over the sliding scale between 0 to 8. We relocated to Ramona about 4 years ago, and found a couple of satisfactory vets, but not one that we were truly comfortable and happy with. A few months ago, while researching to find a well recommended veterinarian to take our 8 year old Jack Russell to, for neutering, we came across Trident Veterinary Hospital and more specifically Dr. Ashbaugh. After calling several locations, jotting down pricing, and reading reviews I made a discovery that I had not noticed before. Although some facility prices seem great, it pays to ask questions, and check for all the additional but necessary components that go into appointments and surgeries..... such as all the separate charges that are not wrapped into the price being quoted, (such as X-rays, medications during and following, etc.) To my amazement, I discovered that the cost quoted by Trident, included items that were not included in the initial price quoted by others, and that by the time I added on the necessary meds, pre-check, and other components, they were all pretty much equal in cost, however, Tridents star ratings, by reviews, appeared better. Additionally, my phone conversation with Trident was pleasant, detailed, and what the receptionist could not answer, she did not blow me off like I was the ignorant one, but went immediately to find the answer all the while treating me with care and concern, like I truly mattered to all of them, even though I had not met any of them, as of yet. Our first visit was even better than I had been led to believe it would be, during my phone inquiry. There was absolutely NO PRESSURE, no rush, in fact Dr Ashbaugh sat on the floor with Levi (our Jack Russell) calmly touching him and examining him without seeming to, and then he took the time to show us through his entire clinic, surgery bay, dental procedure area, explaining the amazing equipment and special recovery rooms, even describing some procedures. Everyone on site was so down to earth, caring, calming and honest, I was amazed. I was thrilled with Levi's experience and recovery from the neutering procedure. He was up and running in no time, happy as a lark, with no set backs. That was a few short months ago. This week we had another crisis involving Levi, he snatched a fallen ice cream bar, and in determination that it would not be taken from him, swallowed the popsicle stick. Talk about panic! This was almost midnight on Tuesday. We rushed him to a 24 hour Emergency Veterinary, and after 2 + hours, a bundle of $$ and making the decision to forego the outrageous, unaffordable (for us) emergency surgeries, we returned home facing hours of watchfulness and home remedies which had been suggested. Levi made it through the night, although he vomited out a small portion (about an inch) of the 4 1/2" stick. The Emergency had mentioned that they would send the records to our personal veterinary. On Wednesday, it came to me to call Trident and see if they could offer any further advice, beyond stuffing him with wheat bread to help him eliminate the wooden piece. Upon telling the receptionist the situation including our financial cap, and the prescribed treatment, she put me on hold and in seconds Dr Ashbaugh was on the phone with total attention, calmly asking questions, and then requesting that if I were willing, would I consider bringing Levi in so that he could assess the situation and assuring me that regardless of what they discovered, they would not go beyond our financial ability. Let's be real, everything cost! And it must! Equipment, Education, Leases, Staff, insurances.......it all cost! We expect it to. We do not live the "entitled" lifestyle in any form. From my experiences, what I have NOT come to expect is the level of concern that causes a professional of Dr. Ashbaugh's abilities, knowledge and fame to overcome his need to cover expenditures. But this concern & care was offered willingly, kindly and put us on the right road to helping Levi recover correctly. We are forever grateful. Somehow, over the next few months, we will return the favor to this wonderful man and his kind, diligent staff. Our family is fortunate to have found Dr Ashbaugh and Trident Veterinary, and we know without doubt that every good review is well deserved. I brought my little senior pup here for the first time today, for a well checkup and a little procedure. It was a very positive experience. Dr. Ashbaugh was great. He helped me to understand options and answered all of my questions thoroughly. I like how he didn't try to push new products. My pup felt very comfortable with him during the exam and procedure. I even got a little tour of the facility, which had many "stations" (dental, surgery, x-ray, lab, to name a few). It's great to know so much can happen in-house. My 15 yr old mini schnauzer was almost strangled to death by the noose around her neck. She was wheezing very loud and couldn't breathe. None of the staff knew it was the noose choking her and i had to yell for scissors. I am so thankful i walked in right when i did or she could have died. If you are in the area and need a reliable and trustworthy vet, I couldn't recommend Dr. Ashbaughs office enough. His entire team is amazing! Very knowledgeable always looking to provide a wonderful experience for them as well as the pet owners. he follows up with personally calling to check on them even going out of his way to call specialists when needed to make sure they get the personal attention that is needed.
