We have been using Tri-County Vet for over 20 years now, for the care of our dogs. We have been very happy with boarding our dogs there (price is great, and dog-sibs can stay together and save you even more money!), routine care, finding the best flea/tick prevention (best price on Seresto!), and the kindest, most compassionate care when we had to make the choice to say goodbye to one of our beloved black labs. We now have a sweet rescue dog who needs consistent grooming, and after trying at least 2 different groomers, I finally chose Whitney here at Tri-County. Chloe (our rescue) had a past we weren't sure about, and Whitney has been excellent about taking the time to get to know Chloe consistently over time. Chloe is now much less scared at the groomer and walks to the back all on her own!! I make sure to communicate what I need and if I have any issues at all so that Whitney can do her best to address those issues - one time there was some unevenness that another reviewer mentioned but come on, they're dogs, lol. I contacted Whitney directly about it and she fixed it immediately with zero issues. I attached 2 photos - one of Chloe after yesterday's groom and one from a few weeks ago (when she's nicely full). As you can see, Whitney knows what she's doing!! We love Tri-County Vet for so many of needs - ALL of Chloe's food comes from them, they answer all of my questions, call me back immediately if I have concerns, and treat Chloe like family. Five stars. And they've had my heart for 20+ years.

    Grooming issues

I like Tri-County Veterinary. The vets and people who work there care for the animals and are very thorough with their care. They are good about sending postcards and texts well ahead of any services my dog needs. We have also boarded our dog there, and intend to use them again, although I would prefer a different setting for any long term boarding. Their boarding prices are very reasonable. I would NOT, however, recommend the groomer, Whitney, there. The last groom he had there was very sloppy, unprofessional, and uneven (see photos). When we took him in to register our disapproval, the office manager offered us credit very quickly, and suggested we book with their other groomer, Hunter, who works only on Fridays. So, while the vet practice earns 5 stars, this particular groomer is NOT RECOMMENDED!!

My spouse and I have been to Family Animal Care in Ottumwa three times so far (9/21/2023,…read more10/18/2023, and 11/8/2023). Our first visit was a last-minute emergency appointment for our cat Sophie who was having stomach problems. Kaitlyn, a Veterinary Assistant, was very kind and helpful. Dr. Drew White, a Veterinarian, was extremely professional, thorough, kind, and compassionate. He expertly diagnosed Sophie's problem and gave us some medicine that helped her feel better. Our second and third visits were vaccine appointments for all three of our cats. One of our cats hates riding in the car, and she made a mess in her carrier on the way to the vet. We didn't ask or expect anyone to do this, but Chloe, a Veterinary Assistant, offered to clean the carrier for us. My spouse and I were amazed by her proactive helpfulness and kindness. We appreciate you, Chloe! Dr. Drew White and Chloe were exceptionally friendly, helpful, and attentive during both of our vaccine appointments. Dr. Drew White answered all of my questions clearly and thoroughly, which I appreciated very much. He has a great "bedside manner". The high quality care our cats have received (as well as the high quality service we have received) influenced my spouse and I to switch from our old vet to Family Animal Care. Even though it's a longer drive, it's totally worth it for us. In my experience, Family Animal Care's prices are fair and reasonable. We're so grateful for their awesome staff and facility. Thank you, Family Animal Care!

I would like to express that my prior experiences at both this location and the Albia branch have…read moregenerally been positive. However, my most recent encounter was not as satisfactory. Despite arriving 15 minutes early for my scheduled appointment, I was not attended to until 30 minutes later (a total of 45 minutes just in the waiting room), as it appeared that the staff on duty that Saturday were more focused on socializing than attending to individuals waiting in the lobby. Allow me to outline the primary concerns I encountered during this recent visit. I want to emphasize my willingness to spare no expense for the well-being of my pet. The incident that particularly unsettled me was the vet tech's disapproval of my choice to administer Frontline to my dog instead of their recommended product. I attempted to convey that the Albia vet, belonging to the same company, had endorsed Frontline due to a previous adverse reaction to their flea and tick medication, Bravecto, which had necessitated emergency care in Ames. The vet tech insisted that Frontline lacked FDA approval, urging me to use their product priced at $267. Intriguingly, the rebate form they provided indicated the availability of Frontline Gold and Frontline Shield in their inventory. Of course they don't want you buying this elsewhere because they are making a killing by selling theirs to you, that haven't even been on the market long enough to have a full list of side effects. Another concern arose during the blood work procedure. While I am accustomed to blood draws from my dog's leg, the vet tech insisted on drawing blood from underneath her neck, a practice I was unfamiliar with and hesitant about due to my dog's size and propensity to squirm. She's 4lbs and fragile. When I expressed my reservations and requested assistance from someone else, I was met with skepticism about my fear of dog bites. My concern, however, stemmed from the potential harm to my dog from the proposed restraint method. Subsequently, I discovered that my dog had suffered a dislocated leg joint as a result of the handling at the veterinary clinic, necessitating a visit to the small animal hospital in Ames for X-rays and corrective measures to put her leg back into place. They weren't open Sunday for me to bring her back to ask how this happened, and I wouldn't have anyways. In a seemingly minor incident, the clinic proceeded to trim my dog's nails without seeking my permission, adding the service to the bill. While this might appear insignificant, it adds to my overall perception of the clinic's practices. Despite the limited options for pet care in the Oskaloosa area, I am compelled to seek alternative options that prioritize my pet's well-being, even if it requires traveling considerable distances. My primary concern remains my dog's health, and regrettably, I find it challenging to trust the level of care provided by this establishment. Megan was the provider. Doesn't sounds like they have a great track record.
