This was an optional excursion on our recent South American tour. A visit to a gaucho ranch to…read morelearn about the ins and outs. However there wasn't much in terms of learning about the lives of gauchos or of a working ranch. The ranch is owned and family operated. We were greeted by the matriarch's son who is running the ranch. We were treated to an empanada and a cold alcoholic beverage. From there we toured the old ranch turned into a small museum. Then the carriage wagon ride - this was a waste of time. The wagon holds eight passengers. There's no narrative. As it had rained a few days ago we were in the land of mosquitoes. Given the opportunity I would skip this. It's a short ride to nowhere. Then it's lunchtime. We went into the dining hall. The gauchos begin serving. Started off with a grilled sausage. Salty. Then a blood sausage. From there it's meat. Most of it medium to well done. I asked for medium rare. The gaucho brings one slice of medium rare. That's it. Besides beef there's also grilled chicken. Salty. Dessert was almond ice cream. Next it's a show. Folk music. And tango dancers. And a bolo performance - that was the highlight. After dessert we piled outside to the fairgrounds where the horses are. The gauchos gallop around herding the horses with help of the Australian sheepdogs. The horses are trained to come up close to the viewing area where you can take pictures of them. The finale - three gauchos race their horses up attempting to jostle little rings that are strung. This happens 1/2 dozen times. On our way back to our motor coach we 're treated to a deep fried empanada and a local drink, the mate. Brewed with herbs and sugar. Later on our tour as we continued on to Iguazu Falls and Brazil, the six of us kept talking about the deep fried empanada we had. It made an impression on us.

Amazing experience. We were beyond impressed. Good was delicious, museum was super interesting and…read morethe shows were spectacular. If you're in Buenos Aires province, don't miss out.
