This joyous roadside hike is perfect for people of all ages. It's short, and even amateur boot-strappers from the lowlands or sea level, who routinely struggle at altitude, should be able to make it up and down. Mountain lions do call the area home, as is the case across the high country. What was different here was the size of kitty potty found on the trail. It was 18 inches long. Translation: very big cat. With 4,000 puma statewide, for me, by way of trail signs, this has been a pretty active region. One of the best visuals came one winter while snowshoeing in a remote, deep snowscape. I followed the extended gait of a fellow traveler, in five to ten foot snow, thoroughly enjoying the easily identifiable stride set by a very large mountain lion, the top of the snow constantly disrupted by the sashay of its tail on the rising and falling terra of rolling hills and high alpine meadow. read more

One of my favorite stops along this road. The primitive trail took us right up to the falls and it was amazing but very steep and slippery. Would recommend going later in the afternoon because the parking lot was pretty full earlier in the day. Beautiful falls! read more

Definitely worth stopping to see. There is a hiking trail but it was snowing and too wet to hike.

Short hiking trail with a spectacular view of a waterfall. The only downside was having to return to town to use the bathroom.

Beautiful hike just 15 minutes along Highway 160 from downtown Pagosa Springs and a sure bet for families or mixed ability groups! Parking is directly off the highway and the beautiful waterfall is a short distance away (maybe half a mile?)....trail is nicely developed and safe. Don't worry about encountering unwanted wildlife here--the solid number of hikers keep them away. While the trail is well shaded, a hat and sunblock is a wise choice! Little hike, big rewards!! We randomly stumbled upon Treasure Falls on our way from Great Sand Dunes National Park to Mesa Verde National Park while driving along Route 160 which passes through the San Juan National Forest. There's a small parking lot just feet from where the trail begins. If you head to the right of the barriers in front you can see where the falls end in the far distance! The trail you will see over to the right is the primitive trail. The one to the left is marked although when we came it was covered in snow! The hike itself is a very short one. It's only about 1/2 mile round trip, however, it's on a bit of an incline and when we visited late April the path was complete unclear and that wasn't even on the primitive trail! Tons of ice, slush and snow. Be careful if you come that time of year. It's a winding trail also, and I do not recommend doing near sunset. There's a very sturdy misting bridge mid falls and there you can snap your selfies and can then choose to continue back down the way you came or cross over and descend down the primitive trail which was so filled with waist high snow we couldn't even step onto it. It's the shortest hike to the largest waterfall I've ever seen and I say it's an absolute must do! It's definitely doable with small children. The only issue you may have is elevation in general, not just here. The forest peaks at about 12,000 feet and I absolutely felt it. We saw one couple backcountry camping. I personally think there's other spots around the forest which are better for this. There's really no flat service and because of the incline and depending on the ground conditions, you could end up with one sliding tent! . If you are in the area, you must stop by! It was such an incredible find! Very easy to drive by, but don't!! Don't let what I said about the snow deter you, we think it added to the beauty of the entire experience!! Had a nice time hiking up Treasure Falls. It was long enough to make us feel like we accomplished something, but easy enough for our 4 year old to make it. I'm sure the falls would have had a lot more water in the spring time, but the views into the valley were really nice, and there is something about sitting near a water fall. Glad we went. read more

We stopped here just because we sawdust the point of interest sign. You can see small falls right out of the car. You can also hike up about a half mile to see the big waterfall. The trail makes a loop and I think it's a little over a mile. A lot of the trail is very steep. It's a strenuous hike, so you might not want to bring small children to this one, and you definitely need good shoes! read more

We were vacationing in Pagosa Springs for a week, and wanted to try some of the TripAdvisor recommended things to do in the area. This was rated number one, and was a great short and beautiful hike very close by. The drive towards Wolf Creek Pass from Pagosa is probably one of the most beautiful areas in the state of Colorado. This hike allows for some spectacular views from higher elevations. The waterfalls, Treasure Falls themselves are quite nice as well. The Fall colors really took stage while we were there. I don't remember there being any restrooms, so plan in advance. read more

There is a short hike up to the top. 1/4 mile-see map. 2 levels to view water fall. Mid level cross bridge-spray level on top. The hike is steep in some areas-but it's worth it. There are benches to rest along the way. View from the bottom is great also if you can't do the hike. Great location right off hwy 160. Loved it. Gorgeous! read more

Three and a half stars. Short duration of moderate effort for a fair payoff. We did this climb close to sundown and were treated to views of shadows growing long in the valley on the far side of the road. A few birds were the extent of the wildlife we saw in our hour here. The falls were frozen over in parts during our visit, but that sort of adds to the beauty amidst the slow snow melt; blowout overlook offers the less scenic view without freely flowing water. Beware icy surfaces in winter as spray refreezes. Fewer climbing opportunities here than at Piedra, but this is much closer to the ski resort. read more

If you want a short and easy hike with a big payoff, maybe with kids or elderly relatives, this is a great choice. There was plenty of water in the waterfall even when we visited in September. read more

Beautiful falls! Short hike to the bridge up top - dogs loved it! Only downside is there is NO TRASH CAN anywhere. Had two of the three dogs poop on the trail, and we had to bring it back in the car with us. Was tempted to leave it with the small pile of poop bags we saw by the fence, but I couldn't do it. read more

I am 13 years old and did this hike with my dad. It is a nice short hike and the scenery is pleasant. It is worth it to see the falls and observe nature in all its beauty. If I ever go back to Colorado I would definitely go on the hike again. read more
