They have a nice range of beers and ciders, though not too impressive of a cocktail list. This is more of a place to go for a pint. The food menu looks inviting. I've had the macaroni and cheese and the karaage chicken. The chicken was absolutely delicious, while I'd give the macaroni more of a 3.5/5. Not hugely flavorful and the sauce was quite runny while the pasta was a bit too soft. To be fair, I am used to American style, which I've observed can be quire different than how the British prepare mac n cheese, so that could be a factor in my rating. I will be giving this pub many more visits in the future as I try more of their offerings!

I rarely, if ever, see the typical undergraduate student population here. The Vic is everything you want a pub to be. The atmosphere is quintessential British pub. No TVs, no music, just nice old wood, vintage pictures and fireplaces. It is consistently rated as one of Britains top B&Bs and is a go-to place for real ales (silver star CAMRA rating), friendly people and a strong whiskey. The Vic is all charm and there is a reason is it a favorite with both locals and visitors.

Two friends and I were at the Swan before a dinner event for some pre-dinner drinks. We decided to have wine. Yes, I know this is more of a beer crowd, but the real issue I had was the fact that our wine was served in half pint glasses instead of one of the many stem glasses at the bar. I found this to be very odd and not at all an appropriate way to serve wine- even if it's the cheap stuff.

Despite this, the pub becomes busy, especially at weekends, although it tends to attract a certain crowd, mainly students. The pub is old-fashioned in its decoration, with old carpets and wallpaper surrounding it's wooden tables with upholstered benches. The bar spans the front of the entrance, with a large lounge area to the right and a smaller area to the right, behind which is a dedicated games room, with a pool table and a darts board. The games room is a brightly painted room reminiscent of a working mens club. The best thing about this pub is the drinks - they're among the cheapest priced in Durham and their range of cocktails is brilliant, which sounds unusual for such a pub, but this is its charm. I first tried many cocktails here - such as a Pink Kangaroo (vodka, advocaat, cider and blackcurrent) and a Fluffy Ducky (vodka, advocaat and peach schnapps). My 17-year-old self didn't find these drinks as disgusting as they now seem.

It is definitely refreshing to see somewhere in Durham city centre with a lot of variety. I was especially impressed by the variety of gin. They had local Durham Gin, which is definitely worth trying as well as a few others. The bar staff were friendly and it was quite busy while I was in (and this was during the day) so beware as it may be a lot busier evenings and weekends. This definitely somewhere I'll be hanging out more often and sampling many of the different beers.

The beer was good, although like all Sam Smiths pubs not a lot of choice. That said; the beer was really very nice and exceptional value for money (I got charged just over £3 for a pint of bitter and a pint of lager). There are a few tables outside for those who fancy enjoying the Middlesbrough air. Inside, it's a typical Northern Pub. He was luckily ignored by my overseas' companions, and given a wide birth. Yesterday's freak was the biggest, most racist numpty I have ever had the misfortune to encounter. He was also very thick, and looked like the sort of person that would like to fight you, for saying 'have you got a light mate' .. He also could not make his mind up whether he was in Richmond, Portsmouth or Newcastle. If you feel the need to enter this establishment, be prepared to be talked at by some serious pond life ..
