I have been traveling throughout Italy for years and have to say I had the best pasta yet, Umbricelli in a delicate Pomodoro and basil sauce, at Trattoria Dell'orso last night. It was accompanied by a perfect red, recommended by Stefano, the owner. I also had an exquisite dish of Alici I cannot even describe. But it was my overall experience in this charming family-owned restaurant that made my meal memorable, and made me wish I were staying longer. When you are dining alone, one never knows what to expect. I was warmly treated and my requests for various accommodations were enthusiastically met. The menu offers were more interesting than the usual choices you expect to see, and service could not have been better, thanks to Yuliya and other attentive staff. With one singular night in Orvieto (which I so deeply recommend visiting) I had this restaurant on my radar after having aspoken to some locals. A quaintl and comfortably appointed decor. I ordered the cheese plate and the house special of tagliatelle with wold boar. I had to try the local white wine as well as the red which are both under proprietary labels: An Umbrian Rosso and Classico white. The cheese plate was very good with a nice selection with some interesting honey and berry puree to sample. The past, while well cooked and prepared seemed lacking just a bit od seasoning; an offer of cheese would have helped but I was hungry to slow down. Overall a very nice experience. read more

we stumbled in out of the heat just looking for a cool room and a reasonable bite to eat. The service stumbled a bit as well since the teenage boy admitted he was having his first day serving tables! But he was under the watchful eye of the owner so no terrible errors were made. And it made it all kind of fun. the pasta dishes were just wonderful. Tagliatelle al Tartufo was loaded with tasty truffle on perfectly cooked tender pasta. Umbricelli Caccio e Pepe was also lovely with a velvety sauce spiced with lots of black pepper. We had a bottle of the house Ovrieto Classico and liked it so much we bought a bottle to take back to our apartment. A wonderful afternoon repast that brought on a delicious nap afterward! read more

We decided to get lunch at Antica Trattoria dell'Orso on a recent trip to Orvieto based on the recommendation of a friend that lives in town. We love traditionally prepared food and when we travel we look for dishes and wine that are local, and this restaurant has both. We started with a couple of antipasti. The fried pork-belly was amazing. It has been a while since I enjoyed US style bacon and this exceeded all expectations. It was flavorful, smokey and crunchy. We also ate a selection of sliced meats. I hadn't had this in a while so I might have enjoyed it more than I should have, but it was great as well. We enjoyed a regional pasta called Umbricelli, which is a fresh pasta that was chewy and held up to the sauce well. I had it with a cinghiale ragù and truffles and it was delicious. I believe the pasta, sauce and truffles are all Umbrian delicacies and I was so happy we came to this restaurant. For dessert we enjoyed a pistacchio semifreddo and a torta di mele, both of which paired well with the strong espresso, which finished off our fantastic lunch. read more

We got this recommended to us by the owner of Alkimye (Diana and her store are amazing too!) and it did not disappoint. The buffalo caprese and melon + ham were great starters and a split of the pomodoro pasta as well as the wild boar Ragu did the trick for us! The service was outstanding!!! read more

Overall 2.5 stars. So-so food. This impression might simply be due to what we ordered, or an off-night for the restaurant. We two had dinner here, based on the restaurant's mention in Rick Steves Italy 2019 guidebook. FOOD: 2.5. Out of curiosity we asked about the "Rick Steves Special" mentioned in his book. There is nothing special about it at all: it is simply the 2 person tasting menu on the regular menu. We were going to order something else, but as the owner assured us that it was excellent we acquiesced. If I had a do-over I would order off the regular menu. - House wine: 2 glasses of tiny sips of wine. Unlike the food, the inclusion of wine in the tasting menu hadn't been explained to us, so the low quantity was initially disconcerting. I later ordered a quarter liter of red, and somehow this was cheerfully included in the price of the tasting menu. - Truffle soup: 3.5. Very good. - Vegetable (chef's choice): 2.0. mediocre. - Chicken (chef's choice): 2.0. mediocre. SERVICE: 3.0. To be fair, there seemed to have been some miscommunications (which we didn't experience elsewhere during our 3 weeks in Italy). Otherwise ok. And they did kindly and inexplicably include the separately ordered quarter-liter of wine in the tasting menu price. AMBIANCE: 2.5. We sat inside. There are very bright and hot lights over the tables. The brightness is somewhat alleviated by white cloths that drape the hanging light fixtures. We stopped by for an impromptu lunch (a Monday in February... low season for tourists) and were seated immediately. Service was great and attentive. The food was really good! Fresh mozzarella, papardelle with boar, stuffed pigeon! I wasn't a huge fan of the amatriciana pasta -- it was my first time trying pasta with this classic Italian sauce/flavoring, so I'm not sure if it was just this restaurant's version of it that I didn't like or if I just don't like amatriciana style pasta in general. Desserts were good - the apple pie is more of an apple tart and it was tasty, not too sweet like American desserts tend to be. read more

AS GOOD AS IT CAN POSSIBLY GET Odds are good that if you're in Orvieto to begin with you're either (A) a savvy and adventurous traveler that's been there and back again like Bilbo Baggins (B) a member of the Rick Steves book brigade, or (C) an all knowing and omnipotent being capable of locking on to the scantest scent trail of a good time and navigating it to its source. I'll put my money on (B). Therefore, everything you may have read in Rick Steves' Italy book you should listen to. Try the "trust your chef" dinner selection and let Gabrielle make your picks for you. It was dirt cheap and the best meal I had during my trek through Umbria. The pasta dish that was whipped up by the chef was a fettuccine with a creamy gorgonzola cream sauce and fresh sliced truffles. It was the first time I had ever tasted truffles and I was pleasantly surprised how well those strangely tasty fungi paired with the gorgonzola. It was like a match that was made in heaven that exchanged nuptials in my mouth. If you're an (A) or (B) as described above, please help me makes those B's out there know what they're missing with this restaurant... Yelp now, or forever hold your peace. read more

As soon as we got into Orvieto, this was the restaurant we went in search of. My travel mate had dined here once before and deemed it good enough to come back. We were greeted warmly by the host/server and seated immediately. Considering the day was already so hot and our throats were so parched, the cool, quiet interior at lunch time and a tall (wine) glass of water was welcomed. For those of us who have not yet mastered the Italian language, the server was kind enough to recite all of the meal choices in English, and then bear with us while we made a decision because EVERYTHING sounded delicious. The great thing about restaurants like this one is that it's a rotating menu. What is available to eat on Monday may not be available on Tuesday. It's based off of what excellent quality items the establishment can acquire that day. My choice for that day was a ricotta and spinach filled tortellini in a vegetable sauce and let me tell you, it was a spiritual experience. If ever you find yourself in this charming little restaurant and it is one of the options: GET IT. Oh my gods, get it. Reasonably priced, easy to find, a nice break from the hustle and bustle of tourists and their cameras, very friendly atmosphere, delicious, and with so much warmth, you actually feel like you're in someone's home. Cosy and vey welcoming with the host taking you through what they had to offer for each course rather than a menu. Dishes are prepared based on what is freshly brought in each day, not a fixed menu. Occasionally the chef would come out to chat too. It was more like a dinner party than a stiff restaurant. With the chef's own twists of spicing and alternative ingredients for classics, what is on offer can hardly be considered traditional Umbrian, however everything served was delicious. It was a little pricey considering what we ate, but worth avoiding some of the more tourist orientated options on the main Corso nearby. read more

Rick Steves was right. Dinner here was probably one of the best meals I've ever had. I had a tender steak with arugula and small tomatoes, and my husband had tagliatelle. We shared a small salad and a side of grilled vegetables. All fresh and amazingly delicious. Asked for a wine recommendation and ended up with an incredible bottle of local wine. The ambience was cozy and yet chic, and the service was kind and friendly. I'm almost scared to post this because I don't want too many other people to discover this place! BEST BEST BEST I must say hands down this restaurant (the oldest in Orvieto) produced the best meal we had in Italy. Brilliant flavours and oh so authentic! If you come to Orvieto but don't dine here you've tragically dropped the plot, you might as well have stayed home. The service was wonderful and we drank a delightful house red wine made specially for the trattoria! The pasta was fresh and the ingredients seasonal. The place even gives you the opportunity to taste an Orvieto specialty dish...Pigeon! Deserts were also lovely. For our meal we had Artichoke Tagliatelle and Bean Soup after a mixed plate of bruschetta and sautéed vegetables to start. A delightful Tiramisù followed for dessert! Best pasta we had on our 2 week trip to Italy and do not miss the eggplant side dish! We stopped in at lunch time after finding the place on Yelp. There was not much open in December but this charming place was open and only 10 meters off the main square. The pasta dell' Orso was fresh, with amazing, tasty sauce.
