Built on the…read moresite of historic barrel vaults, this inner sanctuary has a sense or calm and stillness far removed from busy city life. If you want luxury, pampering and fitness - then this is your place. The spa and health club are never packed full and on numerous occasions I have had the swimming pool to myself. The pool is 1.4m deep and approximately 15 x 10 metres. There is a chill out area surrounding the pool, along with a jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. The gym offers a good range of equipment, including two running machines, three cross trainers, four bikes, one rowing machine, two weights machines and more. There is also a weights room for those wanting to focus! After exercising, the changing rooms have powerful hot showers with Gilchrist and Soames shower gel, shampoo and conditioner. Also great hairdressers and straightners for the ladies! Want some pampering? There are various packages - a day or couple of hours etc. Facials and massages tried and tested - and I would highly recommend them. If you go for the Premier club (gym, pool, sauna etc) membership you get a complimentary spa treatments per month - so cool! Lush green apples are beautifully displayed for you to munch on after exercising or your pampering session and two choices of newspapers to read as you chill out. Cost wise - pretty good value for what you get. Love it love it!

Excellent. It is a very large gym with all the usual equipment you'd find and a great exercise space for free weights and routine gym work. When you join you get a complimentary health MOT - a 12 point health inspection that covers every aspect of your fitness you can think of. It definitely gives you the motivation to keep going, especially if the results deem you quite unfit, as they did for me :/ The pool and sauna / steam room / spa are excellent and usually quiet and the changing rooms and shower facilities are state of the art and very well maintained. There are personal trainers wandering around the gym most of the time, so it's really easy to grab them for advice or even book them for a PT session. Classes also run daily and are included in the membership. I can't fault this gym.

So some staff have hung on in there from both clubs before but nice to see some fresh faces. There has been quite a lot of cosmetic change. Much needed shower refurb. Some new equipment. And better use of the space. They have also developed a new health and fitness centre where you can get MOT done and check you're still alive lol. I also think they have listened to us old timers or loyal members as we like to be known. And they have introduced the coffee shop with juices and healthy snacks and for the city centre it's very reasonably priced. I like the vibe. And the atmosphere. No offence To Virgin but it's less electronic tag and more cooperate membership now!

It's £15.99 a month with a £20 joining fee (and it seems as though they occasionally waive the joining fee) on a rolling contract. This is one of the cheapest gyms in town to the best of my knowledge (Ben Dunne on Whitworth Street I think is cheaper). Here are the things I love about it: - You get a code that gets you through the main door and the freaky little entrance pods. This means you have one less card to lose/you don't have to stand around raking through your bag for it. - On the member's area of the website it tells you how often you've been to the gym and for how long each time. Good for motivation, and just handy if you like to keep track. - There are loads of machines. Even at busy times I haven't had to wait for a machine yet. The equipment all seems pretty modern too - they have spin bikes with inbuilt personal trainers. - All the classes are free (I haven't been to any yet so can't vouch for quality). Notable exceptions are that there's no pool, no sauna, and no free towels. But none of those things bother me: I don't like swimming, saunas are weird, and I can bring my own towel. Everything is clean and well-maintained. Staff seem nice though I've never had to have much to do with them. You can buy a padlock for £3 if you don't have your own. The biggest downside for me would be that the music is too loud - even with headphones on and my own music playing I can still hear it! In the fairly short time I've been a member here I've been really pleased with it - and I like that I can quit whenever I like if this stops being the case.

The lovely little swimming pool is visible from the canal itself. So you can imagine my delight when I discovered it was relatively cheap, especially compared to gym groups such as Virgin Active or Fitness First. You can also avoid a contract and sign up for as little as 2 weeks, and it works out at around a pound per day. So alls well so far. Then i went inside. I think the point about the gym not really being for girls is valid, though I think lots of men should be added to that list too, as its only really suitable for bodybuilders who love dingy spaces as seen in American boxing films. Its small and dark, and pretty damp. Basically its no good. Its got all the equipment you need so if you want somewhere to go for just a couple of weeks then it serves a purpose, but its nowhere near as nice as it looks outside, and there are some better value gyms out there, so if it's a longer term membership you're after, give this place a miss.

In reality, however, it is very different. Located in the basement, yes basement of the building and lacking in any kind of air conditioning system it is a stuff, sweaty and overall an unpleasant experience. The equipment and decor, much like the members are worn and tired and have a musty damp smell which reminds you of your teenage brother's gym kit. The gym also boasts a swimming pool which is also located in the basement and is bathed in an odd red light, reminiscent of late night Amsterdam. Despite all of this, membership and personal training sessions are expensive which just doesn't add up. LA fitness relies solely on it's city centre location as the key attraction which puts it into completion with places such as Virgin Active, which at a similar price offers a far superior gym experience and much improved value for money. 2 stars. I've been a member since February 2014 and have made good use of the equipment, which is scheduled for an update soon, apparently. However, one of the reasons I signed up was so that I could use the pool, but during this time, I've only been in once! I actually forget it's there! I like going to the gym in the morning as there aren't as many people around. I once went at 5pm and swore to myself I'd never go at that time again. The gym was packed and the changing rooms even more so. I had to shut my eyes on the way to the showers as two rough-as-a-badger's-arse girls were parading around with nothing on whilst talking at volume about last night's conquests in the equally as rough club they were at the night before *pukes*. Luckily, I haven't seen anyone like that in the gym since then. Perhaps they decided PureGym was better suited to them as it's cheaper. Before I signed my £25 per month contract, I visited PureGym in Spinningfields and really didn't like the vibes I got from that place. Staff were unfriendly, I didn't like the way the gym was laid out and I didn't like the fact that it's open til the early hours with no staff to keep an eye on things. Doesn't sound safe to me! At LA Fitness/ Sports Direct though, staff are present at all times. They're also friendly and always say hello / goodbye when you come in / leave. One of them even knows my name now, which is nice.

I feel as though classes are lot more organic, allowing the teachers to really work with the class - I swear I'm making progress already in my first two weeks! The teachers are really great, I love the variety, as each practitioner has their own flows and style of teaching. Everyone is super friendly and happy to give tips and advice after classes too. Specialising in hot yoga, the classes last between 60-75 minutes and at the moment they have three classes per day with two a day at the weekends. They also offer hot pilates, which is a great workout for your core. And plan to open a full pilates studio in the next month or so with Stott pilates, reformer and GYROTONIC® classes. It's a great set up, really well designed space and the hot room itself is a nifty piece of kit - using heat panels on the roof that allows for continual fresh air and a germ free environment to practice in (or I've been told it's something along these lines). There's an online booking system to ensure you get onto the class you want. The evening practices book up pretty quickly, but the lunchtime hour always has a few free spaces. Each class has a waiting list and for every wait list I have been on so far, I've been offered a space in the class. As an ex-addict following a 12 step programme, spirituality and meditation are fundamental to my life, as well as keeping some kind of balance which is hard in 'normal life'. I struggle to concentrate in normal meditation, and find the self discipline. My first four weeks attending The Yoga Lounge have had a massively positive impact on my life and my mental well being. I've found my place and my thing in life here. The teachers are great, all with their own style and pace, and every week I've felt an improvement in my yoga though their amazing guidance in classes. Everybody needs to try this. I hope to progress and commit to yoga now, and couldn't think of anywhere better.
