Tpumps is the equivalent of your high school crush who ends up losing their appeal after a year in college. If you like fruit go here, if you like chocolate go somewhere else. Pros: Boba consistency, flavor choices, quick service Cons: Long lines, no Oreo milk tea, parking, "syrupy" taste Once a force to be reckoned with in the boba empire in my heart, is now a mere peasant. Don't get me wrong, I was in love with Tpumps when I first discovered it. I would praise the peach mango lychee bmt or the taro bmt in ways that would make the boba gods proud. Although I praise their boba as one of the best consistencies I've had from any place, it's not enough to win me back. But the love for Tpumps is not the same anymore since I have discovered other places that served the only flavor I ever crave, Oreo Milk Tea. I guess I made the mistake of trying to fulfill my chocolate cravings at a boba shop. Maybe when I crave a fruity drink I'll return, but Oreo milk tea runs in my veins. Parking has been and will always be an issue in this area. Long lines are common especially around lunch time. Despite this they do a good job of completing your order within 5-10 minutes. Salted caramel cookie dough BMT: I tried one of their pre-made template drinks and I felt it was not as good as it should have been. It had a watery consistency that tasted like straight up sugar syrup. The description stated it was for tea drinkers with a "sweet tooth", unfortunately it was so sweet it hurt my teeth. Knowing the cult following of Tpumps and how their San Mateo location is always crowded, one would think that they would be more proactive and set-up clear signage to "order" and for "pick up" at their new SF location. When there's 50+ people waiting for a drink (there's more people waiting then ordering), there's bound to be several Chris, Mike, Christine, Linda, etc so there should be a numbering system instead with a clear display and employees announcing the orders ready for pick-up over a mic. With the crowds of people, it's virtually impossible to hear your name being called when you're in the back. Apparently, my name was "Chevy" last night or at least that's what one of the workers read out my name to be (he didn't see the "L"). I'm not sure I understand how anyone would be willing to wait an hour or two for a TPumps drink. It's not worth the wait. Also the hours are so inconvenient. They open at 4 PM most days (except Fri-Sun). The drinks are available hot or cold in two sizes: regular and pumpbo (extra large). I don't think I'd feel comfortable saying pumpbo. The menu is normally shown on flatscreen LCD screens but they were having problems with the system that day so I didn't see a menu. I think they only have drinks and tapioca pearls are included in the drink price. The line is on the far right. You can watch them brew tea and make the drinks while you wait in line. The drinks are flavored with syrups. Drinks are hand shaken. The space has little décor and it's very brown inside. * Iced black milk tea ($2.75, regular size): The flavor of this drink was better at their San Mateo location. I asked for it to be less sweet but it was still too sweet. The tea flavor was not strong enough and they put in too much non-dairy creamer and simple syrup. The pearls were very good: chewy, not too soft and not too hard, fresh, very sweet. They didn't add too much ice this time and the drink tasted better after letting it sit a few minutes. Much like with TeaWay's decision to put THREE locations just a block apart from each other on Irving (two that are LESS THAN TEN FEET from each other...), I just don't get TPumps. Considering how my friend picked up a drink for me, I would have thought my experience would be abnormally good too since I didn't have to wait in line! To make it easier on my friend (thanks again!), I stuck with something tried and true to rate them on - black Milk Tea with regular Boba and regular sweetness. In other words, despite all of the options TPumps offers, I got one of the most basic, generic drink possible. And no, this doesn't reflect on me as a person. At least, I hope not... Although they're clearly better than TeaWay (despite the same stars), I'm not sure why people wait in such long lines for TPumps. The tapioca balls were actually pretty decent (the ones at Wonderful Foods are better), but the milk tea was disappointing. A little too much cream, not enough tea flavor, and a whole lot of sweetness. Honestly, it's scary to think what "extra sweet" would taste like. Given the (relatively) cheaper prices, larger cups, and sweeter drinks, I guess I can see why people (especially students) might like them so much. And while I can see how their specialties may lie with the more specialized/fruity types of drinks, I don't have much of a reason to come back (though their popping boba is pretty unique). I'm really confused as to why this place is always busy. There are signs all over the place to not cut in line and be courteous to other customers, which bespeak of how crowded it can get in here. But the two teas I tried here are probably the worst I've ever had, and that's really saying something. Service was mediocre at the cashier, but the baristas were nice and friendly. Tpumps does take Fivestars rewards and I believe ten purchases will accrue a free drink. Ordering is pretty simple: you pick the kind of tea you want (green or black), milk or no milk, a variety of fruit flavors, and toppings or no toppings. The hype has definitely died down and the lines are usually very short but the quality remains the same. I love all the different options and combinations that can be made from all the flavors. They allow you to choose up to three flavors for each drink. My favorite drink combo is strawberry lychee. What I especially love about Tpumps is their honey boba. I almost always skip the boba whenever I'm getting milk tea anywhere else, but at Tpumps it's a must for me to add it. Their boba is so soft, chewy, and sweet. I love it. read more

So what's the hype? Now I know. While shopping on an early weeknight for tea eggs at Sheng Kee, I remembered hearing about this place from several friends. Read a number of Yelp reviews about nightmarish lines at their South Bay location which mainly talked about the wait; the product itself was mostly complimented. With our rash of warm weather, though it was a foggy evening, I noticed that there were only three people ahead of me in line. I was glad as this gave me time to study the menu which can be confusing. Rather than "build my own", I read the chalkboard on the right wall by the line which listed a) the Tpumps' tips list or b) fan favorites. The second Tpump location has only opened for about three months now and has taken many of the businesses away from other Asian beverage shops. At that time, the hour of operation started opening at 4pm. I have made numerous attempts to try the beverage from here. But with the second location located in the middle of the block and being one of the hottest businesses along Irving Street, the line stretched well beyond the corner dry cleaners past 21st Avenue. After my lunch nearby (5/21), I made another attempt to try the beverage and they are open earlier in the midday with school ending and summer starting. Unlike the Downtown San Mateo location where that location shares space with another business, the new location is a much larger venue on its own without sharing. And being here on a weekday, there was also no line either. On my debut of the second location, I ordered the large Peach Tea Smoothie for $4.00. The beverage had icy Peach puree, Oolong Tea beverage and other creamy concoction. Despite not a tea-drinker, I like the drink because the fruity peach flavor overpowers the black tea. The shop also accepts the Five-star card program. Sign up at this location and receive a free drink after ten visits. The Five-star card also offers goodies from businesses that honor the program. You need to check the website. This time my visit to the newest location was a positive one. And I am very certain that this new location will continue to get extremely busy. read more

Poor service! It's 9:30pm and the line is medium long. Stupid process #1. With their new & supposedly improved ordering cups it still takes a long time for the sever to write your order. Then it takes another 5min for the cashier to read & understand the coworkers hand writing. SMH Stupid process #2. Ordered (8) pumpbo's which cost me about $30. We waited 20min for our order. Typical? Hell no! We noticed that most people behind us were getting their orders much faster because they ordered as singles. Doesn't make sense! Moving fwd, if we come back, we will order (8) singles!!!! Health Concern: One thing I noticed which could be a health issue, is the order taker will stick her grimy fingers inside your cup while she is placing the order. If you have multiple orders she will stack the cups together. When the cups are given to the cashier, her grimy hands (which has touched dirty money and cards) will also touch the inside of your cup while she is taking it out and reading the order. Asked for LIGHT sweetness since they had 2 other options of regular sweet and more for sugar fanatics. I was astonished by the price of $5 for such a large cup. The cashier told me that it was all sugar flavored syrup. I mean $5. You get what you pay for haha. TASTE: for light on sweet, that was ridiculously waaay too sweet. Tasted straight up milk tea with a bunch of honey which killed off the lavender note. I couldn't drink it anymore after two sips. BOBA TEXTURE: I would not consider this boba at all tbh. Imagine chewing mini marshmallows, 1 chew and that's it. Too soft and no chewy consistency to it. **(blueberry peach black tea) bought a second side already-made drink from the fridge for the road. Fearing that mouthful of syrup so It's gonna live in my fridge forever now. Would I try again? Even though my heart will always belong to the OG mailing room/T Pumps in San mateo (now closed), this Tpumps still does the job and I love their assortment of flavors. The best flavors are usually peach, strawberry, mango, passion, and honey. If you want to be a little adventurous, go with the Lychee, Taro, Honeydew, or Pomegranate. Even though they are called T pumps, they also serve more than just tea options. I have had their smoothies and they aren't bad at all! I also forget that they can serve any of their teas hot!!!! If you want to avoid the long lines - never go after dinner or around 3 - because it is super crowded with high school/grade school kids. Yea, the line is sometimes really long, but you know it's still good all these years when the line hasn't died down! I have been going here since the San Mateo location opened and since the this location opened, it remains my go-to place for boba! I love that I can pick my own flavors and mix and match like a chemist. I love that I can choose whatever toppings I want (but it's normally honey boba). I have an addiction that is starting to become a problem: This addiction includes a ritual of waiting in lines that rival those you'd find in Disneyland, tolerating obnoxious hoards of high school students in said lines, and consuming what tastes like 742% of my daily allowance of sugar. Hit or miss like most have commented. The wait can still be long depending on the times you choose to go (after school times or weekends). It's definitely not as bad as when this place first opened. This location is very popular, so expect a wait. Tpumps is definitely known for their deliciously sweet and flavorful boba. The texture is very gummy and I've never had a bad batch of boba. The tea used to be my favorite. It was strong and of good quality. Now, I'm uncertain because the tea seems not as strong, watered-down. The flavors that I taste are mostly the syrups. I've completely stopped coming here after I received a cup with barely any boba in it. It was just enough boba to cover the bottom. When I went, the staff members seemed really young and immature. I don't expect great service but the drinks were a constant miss for me, so I gave up. I only go to T-Pumps because it's convenient, their drinks aren't really that great here. How? It literally tastes like sugar water. Nothing here is natural and everything is just a pump of syrup here and a pump of syrup there. They also don't even give you enough boba. I would say that they only fill about 1/8 of your cup. Why are they stingy? Also, every time I come here, they only have ONE register open even when you clearly see a long line... This place is also empty. There are no tables and they only have two bench on the side which seats like 3 people each. There are definitely better bubble tea shops out there. I don't recommend going here at all. read more

It's here! It's here! Run everyone, they're finally here. The long awaited second Tpumps has finally opened. If this place doesn't give a boost to the local economy, I don't know what will. The good thing is that the quality of the drinks is the same as the San Mateo one - excellent tea as the base, with black as my choice, and plenty of flavors to mix and match. Now they have blackberry, pomegranate and cherry flavors. So many flavors, so little time. I can't go wrong with my favorite go-to: Passion/Lychee black tea, light sweet with extra boba. Just a few tips for ordering for the newbies: -Pick your size, regular or pumpbo (jumbo) -Choose a flavor or flavors - yes you can have more than one! -What type of tea? Black or Green? It's brewed all day every day so its quite fresh. Or if you're like my son - no tea in his smoothie. I don't know why he bothers, but it's alright. -How sweet? Peach Green Milk Tea for the boba win! I must say that their large size is humongous. This spinoff Tpumps (the original in San Mateo), offers a bigger space and hardly any seating area - just the side wooden, plastered seatings. Having the option of no sugar in my honey boba drink, it was still sweet. Sipping my boba drink, it was a refreshment for a sunny day in San Francisco. read more

One word: Overhyped. If there's a line, I'd never wait more than 10 minutes. The menu can be overwhelming for newbies, so be warned if it's your first time. The cashiers are super friendly, so just ask them for their recommendations! Although I wasn't too satisfied with my expensive drinks, I did like how they offer to remake your drinks if they weren't up to standard or preference. But sometimes... especially during a busy time, no one has time to wait around again. Good customer service and they do accept credit card, which is a bonus. This place is forgettable though, so it's not a must when visiting SF. read more

I don't know why people are lining up and waiting up to 20-30 minutes for iTea down the street when T Pumps is soooo much better. You'd get your drink after 5 minutes at most even when it's busy. The drinks are super cheap too! T Pumps has tons of flavors, they allow you to choose up to three flavors per drink without charge. Their toppings include honey boba, popping boba, red bean, and taro. My usual drink is the Lychee green milk tea with honey boba, normal sweetness. It's bomb! It's not too syrupy and they use real tea. The boba is perfectly soft but chewy at the same time. They recently added a little sample station so you can try one of their drinks while you wait in line. No other place does that! Great job T Pumps, you are my favorite :) read more

Long long. No parking. Long wait. Boring presentation...yet I'm hooked. This is some contradicting situation we got here. Let's start with the negative aspects: 1. Kinda mediocre. 2. They give you 10 particles of bobas...it's literally countable 3. Another hype that I don't really understand 4. Rejected for extra boba? WTH is going through your mind Ricky? Being a regular at Tpumps, I've bought over hundreds of drinks from here and was never this disappointed. My girlfriend and I ordered four drinks total. While ordering our drink, Ricky came and whispered to the cashier who was taking our order and told her not to give us extra boba! Are you serious? I am a reasonable person; if I know you are short on boba then that's understandable! But guess what? They had just brought out a container full of freshly made boba!!! At the end, I did get what I want but it wasn't a pleasant experience! When I asked the cashier again, she told me the boba take nearly an hour to make and she was afraid that they couldn't meet the demand. (Take time management course please!) Thumb down!!! read more

Yay, Tpumps finally has a new location and its in San Francisco!!! I went to the soft opening on 02/25/2013 of Tpumps new spot on Irving. The hours were from 4pm to 10pm. After being sent this hilarious video from one of my friends https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10200567477739886 it only made me crave for tapioca even more!!! Unfortunately, like all things new, everyone has to try it. I remember when Tpumps original location down in San Mateo first opened, it was relatively unknown. Prices were cheap ($2 for regular and $2.50 for plumpo) and lines were nonexistent. However people soon found out that the place existed and prices raised to $2.50 and $3.50 for reg and large sizes. Lines also went out of the store. Well Tpumps new location has raised prices even more, 25cents each size to be exact!! $2.75 and $3.75. I arrived at about 4:15pm and found parking relatively close on 21st and Lincoln (free spots ftw). The line however, was longer than any I have ever seen at the San Mateo location... There must have been over 60 ppl easily in front of me. As with the San Mateo location, they have about the same amount of workers and pass out free samples of their ever expanding mixes of tapioca drinks, hot and cold. Also on the menu were new flavors previously unavailable in the San Mateo location so mixing flavors was awesome when it was finally time for me to order. The line was as how many of the other reviewers described, We got there at 4:15pm and got out at 6:30, about 2 hrs plus waiting to get inside, order and receiving our drinks. The drinks tasted about the same as the ones in San Mateo, just a little sweeter imo. Although the line was long, I was about to get the tapioca that I wanted. I even joked to my friend that I could have drove down to San Mateo ate old town sushi get Tpumps go to tangerine and still be faster than what Irving Tpumps was today. All in all, I will come back when the hype dies down a bit (maybe a month?) until the lines are reasonable and the wait becomes less than one hour. Avoid busy Friday nights & weekends: It was tough on a Friday evening to order a drink since it was an extremely long line. We had to wait for a long time for our drinks. It was worth it since I was amazed by the taste. Environment: Lining up against the right side of the wall as you enter the door! There is a tv hooked up. There is a long bench on the left side. It is helpful to have outlets on the bottom. I actually was charging my phone there while I was waiting for my drink on that Friday night. Service: When the boss is around, the workers work quickly. Once he is not around, the workers slack off on their speed. They work slower especially when the line is short at times. Drink: Black milk tea with lychee and mango. Normal sweetened! Lychee pops! This is my favorite drink now. Best time: Go there during the weekdays around lunch time since the line is shorter besides during the evening as well! Parking: It is a matter of timing to find a parking on the street. It's a hit or miss! You will need to be patient at times. read more

I've had TPumps since the beginning when they started in their small San Mateo location years ago. I feel like the quality has gone significantly down since they started expanding. On my most recent visit, a Sunday night around 8pm, the line was out the door. Normally I would never wait for a tpumps, but when I'm craving something I have to get it. The line moved pretty quickly though, and I ordered my usual hot drink (it was cold af this night, and needed something warm), which is a honey black milk tea, no sweet with boba. My other go to drinks are the mango peach passion black milk tea and the mango coconut black milk tea. This drink usually hits the spot for me, but it just didn't that night. My drink was way too watery, and also they didn't put boba in my drink - when I realized there was no boba in my drink, I had already driven off and it was just too much effort to go back and let them know. Overall, TPumps is alright. It's not in my usual boba rotation anymore so I get this once in a blue moon. The line is usually out the door on weekend nights and afternoons (especially when it's hot af), but honestly it's not worth the wait. read more
