The town of Monroe is a quiet little place tucked near the Appalachian Trail and the Catskills. In the Hudson River Valley, it's a place of beauty, especially in the autumn when the leaves turn red&gold. With its bumpy, sometimes one lane roads, its deer herds, and its silent pond in the center of town, it calls to mind mystical experiences.
Monroe, for all its serenity, is where Velveeta and Liederkranz (recently revived by a Wisconsin dairy in 2010) were invented- http://www.hvmag.com/Hudson-Valley-Magazine/April-2013/Where-Does-Velveeta-and-Liederkranz-Cheese-Come-From-Monroe-NY-Of-Course/

Monroe is also a religious place. There are Hasidic Jews from nearby Kiryas Joel&missionary sisters in full habits meeting at the local post office. It's no wonder upstate New York was part of the Second Great Awakening of the 1800s.
