Run by Merseyrail--app highly recommended for tickets and train information--it's a small station with a couple of benches and ticket machines to its name. No barriers, no staff, no store, no bathroom. Next door is Morrisons, in case you want a drink etc. As of August 2022, the car park is free.

The food could be better and the menu does not change very often. Whilst not being particularly child friendly on the menu, if you ask, they will do childrens portions of things like sausage and mash and pasta in a tomato sauce. Good range of beers and you can even have a dimpled glass if you want. I go there regularly for an early doors drink.

Beautiful grounds and exterior, but most rooms are nothing special (I've stayed in several of them…read moreat this point, all subtly different). Big issues? 1) There's no air conditioning (that'd be unforgivable in the U.S. but is more common in the UK, especially in historic buildings). Still, I have one window that opens and a small oscillating fan as consolation - thankfully it's not massively hot in the UK, even in mid-July, but it is humid, which makes things unpleasant. Still had to sleep with a screenless window open (one of two windows was screwed shut), but the bugs were actually not too bad. 2) There's acceptable included wifi and ethernet cords (didn't try this), but limited outlets for your computer and phone. My room literally has one usable outlet (with a travel adapter, of course). The nightstand lamps appear to utilize a different kind of plug that my universal adapter doesn't accommodate. Very annoying if you're here for business reasons, especially when the one usable outlet by the desk is being used for the small fan I mentioned in Item 2. Oh, the humidity! 3) Room service/bar food is undistinguished. The fish cakes are solid, as is the pasta, but like many British establishments, they murderously overcook beef and burgers. Dining in the restaurant is a fair bit better. Bar does have upwards of 30 kinds of gin, however, and a good selection of other spirits and beers. Again, the surrounding grounds are the draw here, and possibly the spa, which I admittedly haven't sampled.

The lunch time food offered a good variety of food - carby, but this may of been what we selected as a company. Breakfast was really good with hot and cold foods, little jam/honey pots and brilliant tea! Dinner was a little bit disappointing we were served steak which was tough and over cooked and chips which seemed as though they had been under the head lamps too long! Not sure if this was because we were large party but nevertheless it shouldn't have been served that way! I had seen steak been taken to a small table earlier on in the evening and it was gorgeous and pink. Overall a nice place but wouldn't recommend the steak if you are a large party!

Although I've never spent a night in the Oriel House I have spent a few days there. Years ago I…read moreworked for an employer who from time to time used the Oriel as a venue for training courses. I actually spent my fortieth birthday there on a slightly strange course from which I learned nothing but at least I got a day out of the office and a nice lunch. I've just recently been back as my brother-in-law and his fiance chose the hotel as their wedding venue. They do the complete wedding package in-house so the ceremony, wedding breakfast and night do all took place in the hotel. The grounds are ideal for wedding photos and there is a nice outdoor patio, not too far from the bar, which is a great location to sit around and chat while the photos are being taken. If the weather isn't good enough there's a bright and warm conservatory adjacent to the patio. The food at the wedding breakfast was very good, duck parfait as a starter, roast chicken with boulangere potatoes and veg for the main course and a rich chocolate cheesecake with caramalised bananas for dessert. Everything was well cooked and tasty. Service was very efficient with courses been served quickly but without any feeling of being rushed. The evening buffet consisted of cooked meats, quiches and pasta and rice salads and again was very tasty and a step above those hotels that rely on the freezers in Iceland for their buffet menu. All in all a very well organised and enjoyable day. I can't really comment on the accommodation, although I did get a quick look at the bridal suite (and I assume that not every room has a jacuzzi the bedroom!), but as a conference/training or wedding venue you can't go too far wrong with the Oriel House. The only minor quibble we had was that there was no facility to pay by card at the bar, we had to leave a card behind the bar and set up a tab, but we would have preferred to pay as we went.
