The best Mexican food! Very authentic. And I like the fact they actually wear mask and they are very clean compared to other restaurants.

I stopped in with a coworker while staying at the Courtyard nearby. It's a nice little place with a pretty big menu. I had two tacos (al pastor and carnitas) and a tamale. The service was outstanding and the food was good. It wasn't anything special but it sure hit the spot after a long trip from the east coast. I'd definitely try them again. read more

I've been working on a project across the street for several months and Tortas Mexico has been my "go-to" spot for breakfast lunch and dinner! Their breakfast burritos are great, just the right amount of filling and in the right proportions. Their nachos have a little something special and spicy built in to the guacamole, which is great (and I'm not a spicy girl typically). I finally went back with Corazon last weekend and had the carne asada torta. DAMN! Now that's what I'm talking about. For $8, I had a really great torta - perfectly toasted, with fresh ingredients and deliciously flavorful carne asada - and a large horchata. I now actually think the horchata leaves a little something to be desired (I was somehow thirstier after I drank it than before, in some weird folding of time and space) but the quality of the torta and the friendly service make this a place I really need to visit more often. When King Taco #21 is a full up, one must not forget the other Mexican fast food joint in the 'hood. As mentioned before, it's a TINY, TINY place. Don't be fooled, however, the menu is double that of King Taco's. They have a great breakfast menu and a good selection of drinks aside from your standard selection of fountain soft drinks. It's also a lot more veggie friendly, as they have vegetarian options for just about everything (burrito, taco, torta, even taquito), along with the standard list of Mexican meats. They even serve chorizo all day for those of us who love the stuff beyond breakfast. The people who work there are very friendly and are very quick and getting your order out. The owners usually man the cashier during lunch, which shows you their level of commitment in bringing you a good meal. Their bean and cheese burrito isn't huge, but is very filling with beans, rice, your choice of Monterey jack or "Mexican" cheese and salsa roja (which isn't so hot but has a nice flavor to it) or verde (never had). Horchata is freshly made and isn't fountain served, and it's sweet and refreshing enough with not too much cinnamon. My most recent discovery and LOVE: tacos de papa. For $4 and change you get four lovely, perfectly seasoned potato tacos served with a light sauce and topped with shredded lettuce and cojita cheese. These are well-sized tacos, and by 2.5-3 tacos in I'm pretty stuffed, but it's pretty much a shame to not eat all four at once, as these papas don't keep well and you might as well enjoy it right then and there. Yes, it means I've overstuffed myself and am full, but it's so worth it. I want to try their tamales there as well as their pollo mole...and if they do those two things well...oh, they've done won me over for good. read more

I sadly had a bad experience here. I was really surprised because the place seems to popular! I walked over from work for lunch one day last week. I ordered the spicy chicken burrito. It took 20 minutes to get my burrito, people who ordered after me got their food first. It seems like they forgot my order and they had to ask me what i ordered again. That all would have been fine if the burrito had been good- but it wasn't. It was so incredibly greasy and somehow flavorless. There was barely any chicken- it was mostly chorizo and grease. No salsa, even though it was supposed to come with some. I don't know if I'll try the place again or not. read more

Long story long: I randomly came here one time because I was craving a torta and I actually had this place bookmarked for a couple months, so I figure I'd check it out. In case you have no clue whatsoever as to what a torta is, well then go Google it and.... dang, I don't have a snarky comment right now. This is what I get for writing a Yelp review while under the weather #FML Their tortas come with your meat of choice, lettuce, tomato, avocado, jalapenos, margarine, beans, and onions. I ordered a chicken torta with everything on it. Damage, if I can remember, came to I think $5something. The lady helping me was polite. I took it home and opened it up. It looked pretty decent and smelled good. The chicken was actually shredded, which now that I think about it, is usually a bad sign. More times than not, for various reasons, shredded chicken has a tendency to be dry. And lo and behold, this chicken was dry. The rest of the ingredients were pretty fresh, so that made up for it a little bit, but it's hard to overcome dry chicken. I should've gotten something else that I knew would not be as dry, such as carne asada or carnitas. Oh well, you live and you learn. Would I come back? I guess so. Let me start off this review with problem #1 in my food eating life: I CONSTANTLY crave tortas (take that as you may, sickos). If you ask me what I feel like eating, I may say pho or italian, but I'm really thinking torta! torta de queso blanco! torta! torta de chile relleno! torta ahogada! Which leads me to problem #2: It's nearly impossible to find a vegetarian torta in my neck of the woods (unless you count frutilandia, who says they have them but never do. I don't count them). So when we were at the Norton Simon and I saw that there was a tortas place within walking distance, well you know I led us on a hike straight here. Well, first off, it was sweltering hot in the restaurant. I don't know how the sweet girl behind the counter could stand it. I mean, luckily there were outside tables, because it would have been unbearable. Next, my torta was, sigh, just mediocre. The bolillo was too soft and started to disintegrate about half way into eating. It could have used more jalapeños and carrots in escabeche. I don't think it was Mexican cheese. Alas, my hunt for the perfect torta continues (Yaya's is still my LA fave). Can you believe that it's 9:00 am and I'm salivating just thinking about tortas? Too bad I don't eat eggs; could go on a hunt for a breakfast torta right about now. The potato tacos were ok, but the chilango eating them said they would have been a heck of a lot better served the way god intended them, smothered in crema and lettuce. Love hole in the wall places like Tortas Mexico - inexpensive yet still good quality food. I'm not really a torta fan, but I was intrigued by the tacos de papas - OMG POTACOS! So of course I had some of those and also had a pork tostada. Too much food. But I always have to try pork products at Mexican places - if they meet the standards, I'll come back. So - potacos were serious comfort food - fried and then topped with sauce, shredded lettuce and crumbled casero. Yum. Needed some tapatio but I dug the texture and flavor. Tostada was your standard - nothing spectacular but definitely okay. Don't quite remember what my friends got but one of them loved the spicy chicken taco. Worth a mention for sure. read more

Category killer! This place serves the tortas to end all tortas. Have the chile relleno torta (slathered with avocados and beans) or the cubano (with tender, melty, salty pork). Worth the drive from Hollywood to Pasadena, without a doubt. The rest of the menu is excellent, too -- their small tostadas make a perfect side salad (the hot salsa makes an out-of-this-world dressing -- so fresh, as if it's pureed to order -- some of the best taco shack salsa I've had anywhere). Friendly and quick. Best things to do for lunch: call in and order to go, it'll be ready by the time you walk in. Good place to take out lunch from and by far the most authentic Mexican in Old Town. Is it the best mexican food ever? Nope but good enough for me to go back. The spicy (tinga) chicken is good and the chips are always fresh and made there. If you order a bag it's more than enough to share and they always have just the right amount of salt. Purchasing guacamole isn't worth it as it's such a small container (think small salsa container) for the price. The burritos are good and you can order them with onions & cilantro or without. Make sure to get some salsa though they can be a little dry. The chicken quesadilla is a full two tortillas with cheese and meat. They top it with sour cream, pico de gallo, and a little bit of guac. So I tried the taco de papa, chile relleno plate and the asada burrito. The taco was fine, not bad but nothing that stood out. The chile relleno was ok. Not sure what type of cheese they used but it doesn't even melt. The burrito was horrible. I took one bite and did not take another. The meat was dry, salty and the flavor was just disgusting. I told the lady working on the front and she didn't seem to care. At that point I told her that they should taste their food as I was about to walk out. All she said was have a nice day. Ordered an asada torta, regular nachos, and carnitas sope. Everything was pretty MEH. The torta was unimpressive. I didn't like the bread, the meat was fine, but it was just lacking in overall flavor. The nachos....very disappointing. Not real cheese (it was that liquidy nacho cheese) and not real guacamole (you can tell it was squeezed out of a tube). The sope was not memorable. I can't even tell you about it. All in all, if you want to eat subpar mexican food, you can come here. Maybe we ordered the "wrong" things...? I don't know, but if it weren't for a livingsocial/groupon deal, I would not have eaten here and I don't plan on coming back. read more

I was shocked that such a great Torta place existed in Pasadena (in Old Town?). Stick to the tortas, I've tried others stuff on the menu, but it doesn't compare to the Tortas. Here's my favs: Chile relleno torta ( a must), Carne asada torta (Yummy), milanesa torta (The O.G.) and I've had the chorizo & huevos for breakfast (It's alright). The tacos de papa were great but ONLY had potato with nothing else inside. I was a little disappointed. A little lettuce, salsa, guacamole... they would have been perfect. My friend ordered chorizo tacos I think, and she said they were really tasty. I would still really like to go back to try something else, because the people and service were fantastic. Prices are really good, and it's clearly a small, mom-and-pop type shop fully worth the support. I see there are mixed reviews for this little shop, but I find it wonderfully delicious. The people are incredibly friendly (always bumps up a place in my eyes), and the carne asada torta is tasty with just the right amount of spice. If I was just reviewing this place for its mole, it would easily get 6 stars! I ate chicken enchiladas topped with this spicy, chocolatey goodness and would have lapped it off the plate if there was no one around to judge! :) As the owners are from Oaxaca, this is a black mole, and, oh boy, do they get it right. Topped with some cream and onions, it was so good that I left the rice and beans untouched. Having arrived in Pasadena after fighting ridiculous LA traffic from LAX we were famished. Yelp led us to Tortas Mexico for our late lunch (by our central time body clocks, anyway). At first we were a bit disappointed in counter service versus wait staff, but we were hungry and it was close. I'm so glad we stopped in. I am a big fan of a quality mole sauce, so when I saw the Enchiladas Mole on the menu my decision was easy. This was one of the best moles I have ever tasted. I asked if it was homemade and the owner said it was from Oaxaca, Mexico. Guess it doesn't get more "autentico" than that! Loaded with chicken and served alongside rice and beans my lunch was outstanding. Five stars is easy here. Maybe coming off the plane yesterday from a more than 24 hour flight because I missed the connecting flight in Tokyo and had to be rerouted on standby via Dallas Fort Worth and missed the first standby and already having tried my favorite Mexican joint taco nazo. This place was hands down the best burrito I have had so far. I use to love the taqueria joints in the Bay Area. Sf mission district and Santa Cruz's taqueria Vallarta. Cheap, delicious tortas and other Mexican food items served with a smile. Can't ask for much more than that. We got the tacos de papas (four crispy fried potato tacos for $5.99) and the cubana torta. The cubana torta was SO GOOD! It had a ton of stuff in it, but it all worked--ham, swiss cheese, american cheese, pulled pork, jalapenos, tomatos, avocados, pickled carrots, pickles, refried beans, and shredded lettuce. Each bite was something different, but still delicious. The tacos de papas were so yummy and crispy, but they only put a little bit of tomato salsa on top, so it can get a bit dry. I asked for more sauce on the side, and the owner was really happy to give it to me. Definitely need that sauce to go with the starchiness of the potato. I'm a thirsty person, and I asked for more water multiple times, and this is not your typical sit-down restaurant, but the owner was always super nice and brought it over to where I was sitting. I'll definitely be back for more delicious tortas :) Plus they sell corn nuts which is an awesome throwback to middle school vending machines. read more

Food is overall decent: 1) Asada (little chunky beef) --- tasty and decent. 2) Pollo o Tinga (spicy shredded white meat chicken) --- the taste was a little too strong for me. 3) Bean --- love the texture, not loose nor thick. 4) Rice --- moist and good. 5) Corn Tortilla --- typical, nothing special. 6) Service --- perfect! I'm giving 5 stars mainly because of the cashier Lety. She was adoringly nice and friendly! She took her time explaining items on the menu and helping me choose so that they add up as close to $15 as possible since that was the value of my Groupon. Another advantage of this place is that they allow take outs with Groupon. The downside is parking, which was either in the street or a parking structure about a block away. read more

Great bang for the buck. Pros: + Great menu variety. I tried the chile relleno torta, which was a chile relleno on a torta sandwich with avocado, lettuce, tomato, onion, jalapeno. The flavor was good and the texture of the bread was very good, if a little crumbly/messy. + Great value - we fed four hungry adults for $35 including extra guacamoles. That's a good deal in Pasadena. + The salsas have a lot of kick, as do the chicken tamales. Cons: - No soda machine, drinks in cans or bottles only. - No beer to go with your spicy tacos.
