When it come to my vacations there is nothing that I enjoy more than visiting historical sites and last week I had the incredible opportunity to visit the Torre de Hércules in La Coruña during my vacation, and it was nothing short of awe-inspiring! This lighthouse is not only a magnificent architectural marvel, but it also carries with it centuries of history. Originally built in the 2nd century by the Romans, the Torre de Hércules is the oldest working lighthouse in the world. It was constructed under the reign of Emperor Trajan and is believed to have been designed by the architect Gaius Sevius Lupus. The tower served as a guiding beacon for ships navigating the treacherous waters along the northwestern coast of Spain. Getting to the site involves a fairly steep walk up a hill, and once you're there, you'll need to climb the stairs to reach the top of the tower. It's a workout, for sure, so I recommend being in decent physical condition if you plan to make the ascent. But trust me, the climb is well worth it--the views from the top are absolutely breathtaking. On a clear day, you can see the stunning Galician coastline stretch for miles! What makes this site even more impressive is how well it's been preserved and maintained. Since 2009, it's been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, ensuring its careful conservation and protection. Inside the tower, there are informative displays that take you through its historical significance, adding depth to the visit. I couldn't give anything less than a five stars on this review, because whether you're a history buff or just looking for a unique landmark to visit, Torre de Hércules is a must-see in La Coruña! read more

Visited here over 25 years ago and loved it then. Now it's a very busy tourist attraction. But still nicer and calmer than Santiago de Compostela has become. We didn't go inside this time because there were too many people and a long line at the ticket booth (interior tours are limited to 32 people), but we really enjoyed the surrounding beauty, pathways, and sculptures. Get there early for parking. The tower opens at 10, but you can go to the booth for tickets to tour the inside starting at 945. There are tons of tourists taking their photos so most attractions and sculptures apart from the lighthouse weren't suitable for pictures - but the walks totally were. read more

Beautiful and interesting. For a few Euros you can take a walk to the top of the tower for a spectacular view. If you get time and weather permits, there is a stunning little beach at the base of the tower. A must in your visit to A Coruña! read more

This ancient UNESCO landmark has guided sea goers for centuries. It marks the entry to the harbor of Coruna. It has also helped to protect those sailing by letting them know exactly where they are at sea. The craggy coast here is very rocky and dangerous for ships, therefore, any help in navigation is of great help to those traveling along the coast. This is the oldest lighthouse in the world. It's construction started in the first century and has been in operation since the second century. It was built by the Roman Empire and dedicated to the city founder who was believed to be Hercules. Was Hercules real or just a myth? Good question, and the answer is: I don't know. Anyhow, from a distance it looks as if it is a square building that was erected in the 20th century. Don't look for an elevator! Its stairs all the way up! Those who make it to the top can enjoy a great 360 degree view of the coast! read more

First, a bit of background on La Torre de Hércules, a UNESCO world heritage site. Galicia was once occupied by the Romans, mainly for its natural resources. The very original portion of the tower/ lighthouse was built in the first century AD. Over the course of many centuries, either the tower was built up, or people took stones from the tower for other public works and city development. Even after the fall of the Roman Empire, the tower was used as a lookout post during Medieval times. Today, the tower has been converted to a museum (at the bottom level) and tourists can pay a nominal fee (it's about a euro, but so worth it) to climb to the top of the tower. The view from the tower is simply breathtaking. The ocean, the waves, the cliffs...the sky and the ocean form this beautiful blue gradient as your eyes wander along the horizon. Even as the waves crash against the cliffs, the water turns from azure to cerulean to teal, before finally foaming up and receding. Photos do not do the view any justice. This is one of my favorite spots in Galicia and where I drew my inspiration to return to Spain to further pursue my studies and business plan. read more

Built by the Romans in the first or second century A.D. during the reign of Trajan. It 150 feet high and is the oldest lighthouse still used that was created by Romans and, some say, the oldest in the world. There are a number of legends attached to it, of course, including that the head of Hercules' enemy Geryon is buried at the base. Or the one about Breogan, mentioned in the Galician national anthem and Celtic king, built a tower so that his children could see distant lands. The oldest mention is in Orosius. The tower is in the center of Coruña's coat of arms. The walk to the tower is usually a windy one. There are usually a lot of visitors. It's still worth paying the admission to go up the tower and get a feel of its structure from the inside. While not structurally all that impressive, the good condition of such an ancient monument on a wind-whipped shore is admirable. Well worth the effort to get off the beaches of the city and explore its history, which as a settlement began as 'Brigantium'. read more
