Against my better judgment, and solely out of convenience, I gave this place another try last night. I should've known better. Not only do they charge an extra dollar per roll for brown rice, but the rolls really lacked flavor. Sushi can be so fun and really pop in your mouth with all the different combination possibilities but these rolls all essentially tasted the same--flat and boring and bland. Now I'm confident that, even out of convenience, I will not be back. Especially with other very good sushi restaurants nearby. It's a shame, really. We used to love this place! To be honest, I was not very impressed. I've been here twice now, and I just did not get a good impression either time. I've had rolls (shrimp tempura, tuna, and spicy tuna) and assorted sashimi here. Some of the fish was decent, but some did not taste the freshest to me. I'm sorry to say it, but in my mind there's no comparison to Dai Kitchi. One positive is the convenience- we walked in on a Friday without reservations during dinnertime and were seated immediately. I stopped in for their two roll lunch special. The guy with me had then same exact thing I did. You get the option of soup or salad, we both chose the miso soup. The two rolls we chose were the shrimp tempura roll and the California roll. Check was a little over $19.00 for two people to have lunch so it was worth it. As far as quality relative to the sushi and sashimi, this is probably the best spot in town as there are many average sushi joints in Montclair. The only negative is the service levels at half capacity and above...I really don't get how a restaurant doesn't react better to much needed turns especially during dinner rush.... read more

All the sushi was fresh and presented in an appealing way. The waitress was nothing but courteous and nice. Didn't enjoy the sushi "pizza" as the bread was a bit soggy. Other than that - great little spot! Would certainly go back. Byob doesn't hurt either read more

Thank God I finally found an amazing true sushi place in NJ which does not have Manhattan Nobu prices. The sushi/sashimi and even the cooked food is fresh and superbly delicious with appealing presentations. Ordered for home delivery. We ordered 4 rolls. One of the rolls with the white fish was super fishy tasting and smelling. The other two rolls were ok but also not fresh or great. The last roll was a California the avocado wasn't ripe. For the very first time, my boyfriend and I threw out sushi rolls. We will not be giving this place a second try. read more

First of all.... Let me just start out by saying that i am going to wake up tomorrow throwing up. It took 10 minutes to find a hostess. After we were seated and ordered our food it took another 15 min before we even saw our appetizer (over cooked edamame) and then another 20 get our ..."sushi". The salmon must have been days old. It had a fishy, vile, smell and terrible taste. After flagging down the unattentive waitress they handled the situation terribly, offering to re-make the roll with the same bad fish and only offering us a 10%($3) discount. We were forced to argue with the rude hostess trying to convince us that "we must not like it, our food is fresh" and were still given a $30 bill for this disgusting meal. Terrible service and terrible food. Will not be coming back EVER. Surprising this place is still in business. read more

Brutal from almost all standpoints. Took so long to bring out hot food - did not distinguish between appetizer dumplings and entree sushi and brought out dumplings (pork gyoza) late. They were gross. But not as Gross as the tofu teriyaki. I know, it's an American dish at a Japanese place but I was with my 10 year old and it is actually made well at other places where they use nice fresh vegetables and good quality tofu. Not the case here where there was a weird gelatinous skin covering the tofu and some wilted broccoli shoved in the corner of the plate. My sushi dinner A was fine but the eel, squid and some other shiny inedible pieces could not be eaten without much chewing. The service was brutal and all the waitstaff seemed brand new or confused or both. There was one waitress who spent at least 50% of the night literally staring perplexed at the billing station tapping the keypad. The most maternal of the staff was saying things to the staff in her native language (not Japanese) and was disingenuous when our food took super long to come out, "your sushi was our first priority.." Or some such bs. Lame. Pretty brutal overall. Don't think I'll be going back. read more

A solid winner in my book. We eat here at least once a month and have never been disappointed. A special there is Aji, which is a whole fish which comes to the table whole (head and tail) with the meat sashimi'd. Then they take back the fish and deep fry it--you can eat it all. Sushi is consistently fresh and I love their uni with quail egg. We usually order the Esther roll. Bottle of wine, lovely servers, all in all, it makes me very happy. read more

Fantastic sushi. After living in Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, and Brooklyn I'm a self-proclaimed "sushi-snob". It is, objectively speaking, the most enjoyable entree known to mankind - when prepared well. I read other reviews here on Yelp before ordering takeout for my wife's birthday here - and we were not disappointed. Generally, we try to eat sushi at the restaurant - it is "that-many-minutes" fresher and environment, it seems to me, makes a huge difference with this food (for some reason more than other foods). that said, the environment at Toro was great - I hope we can eat there sometime. My only recommendation? Better music. Smooth jazz may placate the masses - but it annoys anyone who appreciates good music. Play either real jazz (if you want to have mass appeal) - or play downtempo (the ideal sushi music). Here are some ideas: Theivery Corporation, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Tosca, Dzihan & Kamien, Zero 7, etc. etc. Even better - get a live DJ. Of course, that might tip the cool meter way over what Montclair can handle. Upper Montclair, after all, is pretty white bread. Back to the food: it was awesome. Loved the two specialty rolls we got, as well as the 'standard' rolls. Got some Sake next door at the liquor store and we were ready to go. Highly recommend this place. Best sushi in Monclair. We've been looking for good sushi since leaving the city, wow there are some bad ones around. Toro was a great find, going back tonight! The serving size are perfect, everything is really fresh. The Memory of Sakae and Seaweed Salad with Tuna Carpaccio over Seaweed Salad were fantastic. I love sushi and I love this restaurant. The food is delicious and the staff is friendly. My family has been going since they opened and I have not one complaint. I had my 50th birthday dinner at the restaurant and when anyone comes to town and wants sushi this is where I take them. I recently had 11 guests come from Virginia and along with my husband, two local friends and myself we were 15 and we had a blast. They all loved it! I placed a small order for delivery from Toro expecting to receive my food in 30-45 min. When I called, the woman who took my order didn't see it fit to let me know that my food would take over an hour for it to get delivered. I live 5 min away from the restaurant and received my food an hour and a half after calling it in. I was so hungry, I had to scarf my meal down and couldn't even enjoy it. If this place had any idea of good customer service, they would give more than just an apology. Try taking something off the bill or throw in something on the house. I ordered 4 sushi rolls for pick up on a Sunday night. They told me 25 min. I showed up right on time and was told my food was not ready. The hostess then repeatedly disappeared for lengthy amounts of time. 4 other people were also waiting for food. After waiting another 20 minutes, I was told they had RAN OUT OF RICE. They had to reverse my transaction and I left.... That was it. No other compensation or explanation of why I had not been told sooner. Not trying this place again. I'm a big fan of sushi, and consider myself to have some real expertise about the quality and ambience of sushi bars. Toro is outstanding, both in terms of the menu, presentation, and most of all, the wonderful sushi and unusual other menu items. For example, the spicy mussels were incredible, fresh, delicious, and uniquely flavored; the gyoza were excellent, and the special roles were wonderful as well. The staff was extremely attentive, and during our meal, the owner came over to say hello and see how we were enjoying our meal. Have only ordered take out from here but it was very good sushi. Tasted fresh. Especially liked that the Rainbow roll uses real crab instead of imitation Krab. Udon was good, as were the shumai. So we received an menu in the mail for this place not too long ago, and decided to give it a shot to see who we liked best between Aki, Koreander, and Bamboo. After receiving the total and hanging up, I double checked what we had ordered and the total sounded slightly high, even with the tax included. So I called back, and the girl on the phone reviewed each item and the price. It turns out that one of the items was $1 more than the price we had on our menu. I questioned that, and the girl said that her boss just updated the menu a week or so earlier. So moving on, she then explained that there was also a $3 delivery fee because we are in Clifton and delivery was only free within Montclair. The menu plainly stated "free delivery within 3 miles." We live in Clifton, but we are right on the Montclair border and only 2 miles from them (and certainly a lot closer to them than a lot of houses in Montclair, who apparently get free delivery). I questioned it all with the girl on the phone (who was very sweet, but obviously not empowered to make decisions "off the script" as she kept referring to what her supervisor had trained her on - which was certainly not her fault). These two things were a real turnoff for us, because in my eyes, in the spirit of customer service, the price difference and free delivery should have been honored. The food ended up being good, but they made what I like to call a $4 mistake. For a $3 delivery fee and a $1 price difference, they lost quite a bit of future business since we have other options for good sushi and will certainly use them.
