Happy 90th Birthday, Mr. Tony Bennett. Somebody had a really good idea when they decided to put a statue up in honor of you.
Tony Bennett is not from San Francisco - Many people think he is. But his contribution leaves on indelible mark on our culture and touches people whether they have been to The City or not. New York has had it's share of love songs written about it. And, Chicago got a winner in My Kind of Town. But, how do you beat a song like I Left My Heart in San Francisco? I wonder how many people who have lived here over the years and moved away think fondly about the truth of those lyrics. Because, it's true. There is nothing quite like The City.
Tony Bennett was not the first to sing the song, but he was the first to record it, in 1962. However, the first time he sang it publicly was right here in San Francisco at the Fairmont Hotel in 1961 at the famous Venetian Room. It is fitting that the statue in honor of him stands right in front of the Fairmont. (In case you're not familiar, the Fairmont is a super nice old school hotel on the top of Nob Hill) It's another great reason to make a trip up to this part of town to soak in the history.
As an aside, since Tony Bennett gets a statue, can others expect one down the road? Steve Perry? Just sayin'... read more
