We like to stay in the outskirts of major cities so we were staying at the Novotel in Marseille, which is not really in Marseille itself. The downside of staying so far out of the way is finding nearby places to eat. We were on the tail-end of our trip and were craving sushi (we live on the coast at home - we needed fish!), so we looked up what was close to the hotel. A short jaunt down the road (about a ten minute drive) we found Tomo Sushi. As usual, parking was a bit chaotic. Driving around the neighborhood for a free spot might prove challenging in peak hours.
However, we lucked out and found a spot near the church out back and were able to walk in. We met the lovely owner, who spoke absolutely perfect English. We chatted with him for quite some time and we loved hearing his story of living in Barbados, visiting the US and starting his business in Marseille. He explained the menu and suggested we do the "tray" for 2 people, which only cost about 35 Euro. We took it to-go and promised to return, if we are back in Marseille.
We went back to our room and feasted. WOW! To be honest I wasn't sure what to expect. But the fish was fresh, the rice perfectly cooked and every last morsel was enjoyed. The Salmon Sweat (it is basically a Philadelphia Roll, for Americans reading this - only BETTER) was fantastic. I could have had 50 of those. Everything was great. The tuna, the egg, the salmon, the cheese, the avocado.
Please, merci, whatever, please come here. The owner said he only sees Americans maybe twice a year, if that, because he is more in a residential area and not near downtown. That's understandable, but, if you have a car, and want sushi that is great and is probably much less expensive than the downtown restaurants, come here and enjoy. You'll meet a great guy and will be helping out his business. I want him around when we come back! read more
