Interestingly enough there are private residences mixed in as well. OK, so maybe it's really not incredibly riveting but it's still kinda interesting to see how early American life played out for Moravian, Black, and Indigenous peoples that lived in the South. A few of the buildings had docents in period dress relating the history of the particular house (some of these require separate admission tickets) or demonstrating their trades. For instance, we passed by a gunsmith's shop with a working craftsman inside, but it cost to go in. The whole area includes the Historic Town of Salem, the Gardens at Old Salem, the Frank L. Horton Museum Center, and the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) and is a few blocks from Winston-Salem's main downtown area, so probably best to park at the lot of the Museum/Gallery/visitor center and walk across the very cool Old Salem Covered Bridge to the village. We didn't have time to see all the grounds - which by the way, also have the site of the Original Site of Krispy Kreme Doughnut shop, which we did see, and were hugely disappointed by. It ain't nothing but an empty lot. But if you like old stuff like I do, you'll dig Old Salem even if you just go for half an hour. Plus it's mostly free.

I really like nurseries because they're full of green and tend to blend into the landscape pretty well. This is right on the road and easy to miss if you're not paying attention... but there are many great plants inside. They also have a nature trail! We ended up getting what we need and even asked some questions about future projects. One thing I was looking for was a suitable bush for a hedgerow, and I only had the latin name given by a gardener we met in Africa. The guy knew the plant and had the common name and recommendations. Over the years…read moreI've bought many varieties of hosta and hellebores for my woodland garden as well as plants for sunny locations in my yard and garden. One of the plants that I especially love is the Edgeworthia. I bought a pair and planted them on either side of the driveway in 2017. This shrub is lovely year round especially in February when it blooms. Incredibly fragrant upside-down blooms. Frank is usually busy working with his plants when I'm there. I feel free to take my time and explore every area of the nursery. Sometimes it takes a while to find someone to take my money once I've selected my plants.

This is a beautiful garden with walking paths and benches so you can enjoy the view. This garden was peaceful and inviting. This garden also houses numerous vegetables that are donated to a local organization. I just loved that concept. There is a beautiful greenhouse filled with plants to peruse as well. We enjoyed this visit today. The only reason for the 4 star review is that the entry to the garden is confusing and they don't have proper signage to direct patrons. We had to tell many people how to enter the garden area.

The service is great and they are mindful about what plants to recommend planting depending on the time of year and what types of soil to use to help the plants thrive. While they may be lower on inventory than large big-box stores, they only bring in annuals when they should be planted and what they do have is much healthier than what I have found at other stores. With the reduction in number of local garden centers, I definitely recommend making the drive right outside of Old Town area of Winston-Salem.
