A new restaurant opening in my hood and me not noticing - tsk! Anyway, I arranged to rectify this deficit immediately and paid them a visit for lunch this Sunday I'm not sure if it's a nod to the heritage of this site but they do offers a variety of grilled skewers in addition to the usual Japanese fare of sushi, bento boxes, etc. I did time my visit well as they were runni9ng a 20% discount on grilled dishes like the skewers I plumped for the sashimi bento box which offered a variety of 3 fishes as well as vegetable and prawn tempura together with rice and Japanese pickles. A complementary miso soup arrived as well. I also took advantage of the discount offer by ordering 3 skewers - beef, pork belly and chicken with spring onion I did enjoy the sushi, which was fresh though the salmon was perhaps not quite as sweet as at Noodle Foodle just down the road. I was also missing some gari (pickled ginger) in the box. The tempura was crispy and the batter was nicely seasoned. The miso soup has some nice cubes of tofu swimming prettily. The skewers were a little disappointing in that they tasted very similar and were crying out for some sauce to bring out the flavours of the meat Overall, a nice addition to the area and the skewers are something which isn't currently available at any of the local restaurants. However, if I had to choose, I'd probably pop to Noodle Foodle for my fix of sushi and tempura

Flavoursome miso soup, and the contents of the bento itself was well seasoned and beautifully presented. We also shared some exquisite tuna avocado sushi. It's not the cheapest sushi, but it's very popular with the locals, and with such delicious flavours served in a relaxed setting, I can see why. I can't wait to return and try a wider selection!

Slurp describes itself as a Chinese/Japanese restaurant and it's located at the end of Wimbledon Broadway. It does a broad range of oriental dishes - perhaps the best way to visualise the menu is to imagine Wagamama combined with Busaba Eathai with a few more Asian countries represented as well. I would say their emphasis would be on noodles with some bento boxes and rice dishes as well. I've tried their seafood ho fun (broad rice stick noodles) which was nice if a bit pricey at over £7. There was a nice selection of fresh juices. If you like the Wagamama or Busaba concept and atmosphere, you'll like Slurp. Sluuuuurp - sorry, the name just brings a smile to my face :-)

So after a hard week [again] and a well deserved earlier finish returning to Slurp was supposed to be comforting. And it was, the same old service with a smile, not too busy early in the evening and a nice Slurp juice of various fruits obliterated to a more-ish liquid nature. But previously grubby benches and low light nature of the place had been replaced by a brighter, more IKEA in nature atmosphere; not so comforting. And although the Ebi Katsu (how could you do these wrong anyway?) was still there, the previously tasty and by no means healthy MSG riddled well spiced offerings had been replaced by a bland, water offerings (the House Special rice and Prawn Black bean equally disappointed). Such a shame, and my regularly burnt tongue that I still got from the pipping hot food was no longer offset by the naughty but nice food. Yup - Slurp Juice, Green Tea, Ebi Katsu Nah - House Special rice, Prawn Black Bean

The service was great - very attentive and friendly. The ambiance is nice - traditional Japanese with a modern style. The sushi menu is pretty impressive for London, lots of options for 'California' style rolls. Which was its saving grace: we ordered spicy tuna roll and tempura avocado roll, which were both delicious and well-presented. But everything else wasn't very good. The miso soup was tasteless and not very warm - undrinkable. Edamane was alright without being great. The handroll we received was not what was ordered, and the seaweed was chewy with a bad flavour. Maybe we just ordered the wrong things for this place. However it's close to where we live so we may go back to try again - where we'll only will order rolls. They also deliver, which - as you know - I love!

This has been reflected in Wimbledon when the restaurant openings continue apace with Crepe Affaire, Chichimanga and Oki opening their doors in the last few months Oki is run by the same owners as my favourite local Japanese restaurant Noodle Foodle, located further down the Broadway. It's good to see them bring their brand of fresh, affordable Japanese good into the main shopping area of Wimbledon Broadway The menu is similar to that at Noodle Foodle, covering sushi, tempura, noodles and starters but with the addition of some Korean dishes. The prices are generally a pound or 2 more expensive than their counterparts at Noodle Foodle but still value for money My sister and were excited to try Oki out and we popped in for lunch after church. We were recognised by one of the regular staff at Noodle Foodle and we were the grateful recipients of one complimentary dish of fresh healthy wakame salad lent some nuttiness by sesame seeds We went with some old favourites. Dragon roll is topped with the richest, most unctuous unagi (eel) and is a mouthful of bliss. We also had some salmon sashimi and the plate had some lovely plump sweet moist salmon I like chicken karaage and it has been a notable absentee from Noodle Foodle's menu. So, it was a lovely surprise to see it available at Oki. Little cubes of thigh meat deep fried in well seasoned batter arrived, dressed with a piquant chilli sauce As Oki offered Korean food, we felt obliged to try some and ordered a beef dolsot bibimbap. This is a Korean all in one dish with rice, beef and vegetables served in a very hot stone bowl - you can hear the sizzle as it arrives at the table. A healthy dose of Korean chilli sauce and then you mix it all together and let it cook a little. It was a good bibimbap and I was scraping out every last bit of crackly, crispy rice from the bottom of the bowl This is a most worthy addition to the dining options in Wimbledon Broadway and they also do delivery. Definitely the best Japanese at this end of town. Oki is definitley okey dokey!

I am now going regularly to three different places, and Kokoro right at Wimbledon station is one of them. The little shop has proven to be quite popular among local workers and pupils, as it can get incredibly busy at times. But usually, the friendly and efficient team copes surprisingly well with the qeueue of people, and most of the time, you won't have to wait too long. I really like Kokoro, I think their Chicken Katsu Curry is good value for money. The curry sauce has the right thickness, the sticky rice is cooked well and they are generous with the crispy chicken. Only once I was was not entirely happy with the chicken pieces, because some small bits were a bit tough. It still makes me smile when I see them cutting the chicken strips with scissors - I would never have thought of that, but it is an efficient and fast way to cut fried chicken in a small and busy kitchen. While it is primarily a takeaway, they also have a few tables and I have spent many lunch breaks there. So far, I always found a place to sit, even when there was a long queue. Overall, I am very satisfied with the food and the service at Kokoro. They offer quick and consistently tasty food. The staff - mostly Japanese, I guess - are very nice and always have a smile on their face. If you are looking for something delicious and filling, I can really recommend Kokoro just outside Wimbledon station in the Centre Court shopping complex.

Places like Nobu and Roka are of course great but prohibitively expensive for everyday dining. I was therefore intrigued when a friend recommended Maki Yaki to me recently. It had opened on the site of a Korean restaurant close to my house and I hadn't bothered to investigate its menu properly. Well, my search for an affordable SW London equivalent of the small high quality USA sushi restaurant is over. They serve a limited menu which is a good sign. There are some starters divided into cold and warm sections. I had a nice kara age - soft moist chicken deep fried and served with a piquant sweet sauce. I then continued with one of their combination dinners - miso soup and salad served with some of their lovely fish. My selection came with tuna and salmon sashimi and red dragon roll (deep fried prawn wrapped in avocado and tuna). Lovely fresh ingredients and sweetest fish. My only fear is now for my bank balance! I would recommend it for a casual meal, it's decently priced and has a quiet atmosphere. You'll walk away full for about £20 and two people can share 3-4 rolls. I definitely will be back when the sushi-mood strikes.
