Gu served absolutely scrumptious dishes - omg. I'm going to echo the German reviewers for all of…read moreyou non-German speakers/readers:
--the place is not your typical Chinese restaurant, incl. with kitschy/typical "Chinese" decor (its interior is pretty simple and modern).
--they use fresh ingredients and no flavor enhancers (MSG, etc); I believe when I was there, there was even an option for gluten-free something-or-other.
--not all of the dishes are traditional Chinese dishes, but that doesn't make them any less delicious!
--the service is really, really slow: it's basically one older Chinese woman, probably the owner (/owner's wife), doing all of the serving, and when we were there the place was completely packed. While this isn't a huge restaurant, by any means, it was still really busy, which means this lady was always hopping.
*I'd also like to add the following*
--all of the meals are made to order. Like, seriously. Made. To. Order. You can request anything, but I suggest checking out their specials or asking for a recommendation. (OR just getting the dumplings. You can never go wrong with dumplings/their dumplings!)
Continuing. There is like one chef, an older Chinese dude, probably the waitress's husband, and he did literally all of the cooking the night we were there. That man was a cooking machine, and every single thing he produced was amazing. Seriously, y'all. The problem with a one-man-chef restaurant? Everyone gets their entrees separately, since they're cooked and ready pretty much separately (made to order, do recall), so to be served hot, we all got our entrees a few minutes apart.
Compound the one-man-chef + one-woman-waitress thing (which while the latter isn't so uncommon in Vienna/Europe, here it was an issue), and the whole dining experience took a very, very long time - don't come too famished!
This place gets 5 stars from me, instead of 4, because of the quality of the food and, even more than that, because at the end of the night, my party was the last in the restaurant, and we got to see the one-man-cooking machine literally passed out asleep at one of the tables in the middle of the restaurant. It was just so cute and, well, hilarious - he worked his ass off and cooked amazing food all night, then just passed out in what I presume to be his own restaurant. That's the awesomesauce right there.
*Because it's a smaller restaurant, I suggest making a reservation, especially especially for a peak time, and on peak days!
