This was a really nice dive bar, located a little bit off the main drag in downtown Columbus…read more We hadn't originally planned to stop here during our visit, but construction on the adjacent railroad made this the stop were we had to abandon the car and set out on foot. We're glad the construction stopped us here, as this was an enjoyable visit. The bar had just opened but our bartender was able to serve us and keep us entertained with conversation despite performing her opening duties. She was able to give us a lot of useful information about the town. I really like the look of this place too. It was clean and well-kept, yet still managed to maintain the gritty character of the old building in which it is located. There's one dart board and a jukebox, but not enough room for a pool table.

The title was previously held by a local former-hero* who downed 23 pickled eggs but made no claims to keeping them down. Various other local heroes make claims to either eating a lesser number of pickled eggs, or taking down one of Avenue's signature drinks, the Fishbowl- mixed drinks which consist of 4 or more shots of hard liquor- in impressively short times. As I don't claim to be an expert in either the field of pickled egg consumption or fishbowl drinking, I just settled on a couple of glasses of Blue Moon, served by the friendly bartender, Connie. What does Connie think about all of these local heroes gracing her friendly, low key neighborhood tavern? "People are crazy," she says, "just like in the song." What song? Just a few minutes later, Billy Currington's Great Plains mega-hit "People are Crazy" came on the juke. "God is great, beer is good, and people are crazy." I had never heard that tune before. Later in the night after our visit to Avenue, I relayed the story of the pickled egg eating champ to a townie. "I was there!" he proclaimed. Small town. *The names of all local heroes, including pickled egg eating and fishbowl drinking champions, are omitted to protect their privacy, but you can be read their names on 8.5" x 11" crayon-printed awards pasted behind the bar.

It's a favorite place to hang out among local young people and artists. There's often a band playing. It's a good place to watch people. Some strange cats come through, probably to rip out of the surrounding small-town, conservative angst that is Norfolk. The art inside is also strange. I can't remember the guy's name, but there is an artist that everyone loves in Norfolk and lots of his stuff is featured in this bar. They always talk about how great he is when I'm there, and I politely listen, but honestly not my taste. The drinks are so cheap that you have to be careful. I absolutely got shit-faced during New Years a few years ago. It was a fun time though. The bartender was awesome. We had cheap champagne on the house at midnight. They passed around hats, noisemakers and other party favors. They don't have much food here, mostly frozen pizzas that actually taste pretty terrible (but who cares if you're drunk). There aren't too many places in Norfolk to hang out. This is a pretty interesting place.

The lighting was sparse and a aroma I could not distinguish. To say the least, two steps in the door, we could not leave fast enough.

To continue my day visiting Peru, NE, if you haven't read my review on Cotty's Place...let me put…read moreyou up to speed.... Yes, I went to Peru, NE...here is the story...I was born in Lima, Peru (South America) and a documentary was filmed in Peru, Nebraska last year in order to promote Peru as a brand where all sales will go back to the country, not individuals. Here is the link from YouTube video filmed http://youtu.be/nFtmSE... To make the story short, I traveled to Kansas City, Mo to meet LG and we drove under 2hrs to Peru, Nebraska. You should had seen me taking so manny pictures, super excited, until I was called "Japanese Tourist!!! I wanted it all, the sights, the signs to Peru, NE, the people...Fellow Peruvians!!! So, after our super-long lunch at Cotty's place (3+hrs) we crossed the street into Shooter's Bar. What an awesome crowd, hugeeee....considering it was Peru State University's graduation day party...So we came in and spotted Logan right away (He was featured on the video, and is an AMAZING SINGER...check him out on Itunes Logan Merz!!) ...so we met him, his girlfriend, the bartenders, the owner, the residents of Peru...they all welcomed us with hugs and smiles. We shared some of my Peruvian hot sauce and brought another bottle of Pisco. The ambiance was great! The music was a mix of alternative rock and upbeat tunes, not country music as they featured on the video. We met so many people and we had an absolute awesome time. As we were hanging with the locals...Peruvians just like us, we moved to the patio and it has a ledge that overlooks the main street....yup...we were the cool kids! Many, many pictures later...LG had enough of the Free Beers and I was the DD...We left at midnight. Shooter's also had a wall displaying Dina Paucar's poster from the video. We had such a great time, we returned the next day. we played foosball, had another drink, Michael was bartending, and we continue meeting the locals. We left considering coming back to Peru, NE. The people makes the town amazing and definitely never knew Peruvians were so cool! Before leaving LG added a small piece of black tape we bought at the convenience store and added the TILDE over the word PERU. Amazing times, great bar, awesome warm people. Thank you all!
