I will give credit where credit is due; the atmosphere and ambiance is nice. The service is great even though the waiter didn't know how to respond when I said hola. The drink menu is fantastic. I ordered a mai tai and it was great. You could taste each one of the rums they used. Very tasty. We got the guacamole to share and I was impressed that they prepare it in front of you. I've never seen that before. Just like all the other Mexican/Hispanic restaurants the guacamole tasted bland. Garlic, cilantro, chilli powder and a good salt are essential to great guacamole. Warm tortilla chips are important as well unlike the cold half stale boring chips with paprika that we were served. On to the main course. I ordered the Burrito de Carne; a simple dish to prepare and hard to screw up. My friend ordered a steak with potatoes. The steak was okay but you could tell they seasoned after they cooked it and not before. The potatoes were drowned in a generic Ranch sauce. I want sure if they were trying to hide the potatoes or highlight the fact that they love Ranch sauce. Either way it was disgusting and not anywhere close to being authentic. My burrito should have been simple and easy to make but it was horrible. It tasted like sloppy joe (ketchup and beef) mix in a tortilla. They even decided to add under cooked beans to thier sloppy Joe burrito mix. It was so bad that I couldn't eat it. I wanted to get something else but I figured that if they screwed the burrito up that bad it would have been pointless to try anything else. I really wish Germans knew what REAL Mexican food tastes like. Don't expect to taste anything close to Mexican at Joe Pena's. Stay away from the food and order one of their good cocktails from the bar before you go to the movie theater next door.
