This is the old Thirsty Turtle location, so I was familiar with the spot, but probably saw a Facebook post about the new business. Generally, I rather support small business restaurants, and the menu looked good, so I'm glad I checked it out. Lucy is very friendly. Most of my visits it has been very quiet, with only her working. Hoping/assuming it gets busier as the day goes on. Mind you, I love my tranquil time to sit and have a delicious meal and Sissiboo coffee with a book in tow. Her menu creations are more healthy than average, different than the basic bacon & eggs, but she seems willing to adjust any dish, so if you are someone who likes to keep it simple, I'm sure that's doable. I loved the Jane's Addiction is the best example of a healthy but tasty breakfast (half a toasted Montreal style bagel that she buys from the business on Wyse Rd, topped with avocado, crisp bacon slices, old cheddar with an over easy egg. Served side side of perpetual salad (mix of kale, brussel sprouts, broccoli, julienned apples & beets, shredded carrot, dried cranberries, pumpkin seeds, sliced avocado, topped with crumbled goat cheese, with poppy seed dressing on the side). The Sweet Waffle (gluten friendly waffle with bacon, whipped cream and choice of sauce) will satisfy the sweet tooth, yet is still a reasonable size to avoid the guilt (I tried the blueberry orange sauce) Yum!. Her Breakfast Bowl (spiced sweet potato home fries topped with two scrambled eggs, tomato, mushroom, spinach, chives with cheddar or goat cheese, meat for $3 extra) is delicious as well. The Classic Lucy (choice of meat and her bacon is cooked to perfection for me, two eggs your way, spiced sweet potato home fries, etc) is just as good as the rest. I can't see everything on the online menu but the Naan breakfast had avocado, cheddar, pico de gallo, egg, etc on naan) and was amazing. I will definitely try some lunch items someday here, but breakfast out is my favorite to eat out and I recommend that to anyone. Atmosphere inside is quite basic, wooden tables, long and narrow in layout with some natural light coming in the front, artwork on the walls for sale from local artists which is nice. I've noticed some people will just stop in to get a coffee and baked good to go. No issues with parking. A nice little spot for the folks in Waverley.

Rose & Rooster quickly rose (sorry, not sorry) to the top of my list, with glowing reviews and a menu that was approachable but also putting more effort in than many rural cafes tend to. We arrived for a late lunch and were able to easily snag a table out front and one blessedly in the shade. Ordering at the counter inside, it was a tough call for me between their seafood chowder and the fishcakes, but I eventually went for the latter. Some brunchy options were still available, and my wife opted for their croque monsieur. Sipping on some iced Americanos, we soon had our food in front of us. I was immediately impressed with the fish cakes as they looked like they had an incredible crust on them, and looks did not deceive! They were wonderfully crisp, and the interior was smooth, but still had a little texture from the small chunks of potato. Salt cod gave a pleasant flavour, and the green tomato chow/jam was a star in its own right, striking a great balance between sweet and tart. Some yellow flower petals fancied things up further. My side salad was fresh and crisp, with a mix of greens, cucumber, carrots and more, and a delicious, creamy dressing that had a flavour that I couldn't quite place, but quite enjoyed. My wife's croque monsieur was served open-faced, and the cheese and ham had gotten some great colour under the broiler, while a thick slice of fresh bread held up well under the rich, hot mess on top. Not to be outdone by the savoury foods, the desserts at Rose & Rooster will put you in a state of sugar-induced choice paralysis, but we were lured in by the colourful layers of the strawberry rhubarb and matcha layer cake! It's a mouthful to say, and eat, with alternating layers of airy cake, a summery strawberry and rhubarb spread, and a lovely matcha cream. Topped off with more cream and a dusting of matcha powder, it was a flavour-packed treat that did not disappoint. It wouldn't be accurate to call Rose & Rooster a diamond in the rough, since the Eastern Shore is much too pretty for that, but we can stick to the jewelry theme and call them gold.
