But at Aria, which I found out about through a friend's recommendation, I decided to give it a shot. This Japanese hair salon is in the CBD and keeps their clients happy and their hairdressers relatively busy. I've now been there twice: each visit with a different hairdresser and have come out a happy camper. The second time around, I knew I could just pick up one of the magazines and point at it and let the stylist know what I was looking for. Taka, who is a manager stylist and unfortunately has moved up to Brisbane, takes great care when snipping away. You're definitely safer off with a manager stylist, which is worth the extra cost as the prices there are rather wallet-friendly. Customer service there is fantastic! It probably has a lot to do with the (Japanese) culture but from the point of entering ("Konichiwa!!") until when they see you off at the door, they're there mindfully doing their job well. Also, they've got promos like "happy hour" where it's 20% off M-F before noon and others that are released through their newsletters, as well as others like friend referrals. I highly recommend Aria salon if you're looking to get a good haircut, at great value, and fabulous service!

I don't mind paying for great hair and this is what you will do at Togninis…read more While 6 years ago I was a devout customer of the edgier (and let's face it, younger) AKA Togninis, I've since spent years overseas, been a Bergdorf blonde, drunk whisky with a potty-mouthed but loveable snipper while getting the chop in a teensy two-person salon in the Lower East Side of NY, had my fair share of rubbish hair experiences and returned to Brisbane to settle into the chair of the slightly more grown up Togninis Hair Skin Body. And how quickly I have become comfortable in said chair. The totally luxe new salon is a haven which makes the somewhat time consuming task of getting beautiful an utter joy. It's a heady combination of light, glass, minimalism, massage chairs and a pleasing soundtrack. It lacks the grit and blue air of the LES hole in the wall I have so enjoyed frequenting, but it makes up for it in uber grown up glamness. From my first foray into grown up Brisbane hair land, I have been entirely satisfied with my stylist Ying-Sun and my colourist Nell. Ying-Sun brought the wave out in my previously kinky hair and Nell just understands when I want a bright, but not too cherry, red. When it comes to hair experiences, I have discovered that I am equally at home sipping macchiatos and reading Vogue as I am swilling whisky, petting a French Bulldog and reading Inked magazine. Even still, there is a high that a trip to Togninis delivers that trumps all. And don't we all just love a good trumping.

I used to be a regular back in the '90s, when it was still based in Edward Street, and attracted pretty much the best snippers and hippest clients around. Now, in its spacious swanky new hair salon-come-boutique in the buzzy, chi-chi James Street area, I thought it might have lost some of its edge. (Although, judging from the shelf which was absolutely heaving with the all awards it's won, I shouldn't have worried). I popped in there for a quick tidy up of my new, cropped hair and I couldn't have been more pleased with the cut I got. My stylist, Roxanne, spent ages looking through every layer of my bonce, checking the condition and texture. We then talked through what I was finding difficult with it (it was laying a bit too flat against my head), so she cut just the right amount (and length) of new layers in it to give it much more oomph. And make it easier to manage. Yes, it cost a lot ($100 for a senior stylist) but I've always been of the school of thought that you need to pay more than average for a quality haircut. Why? Because I'm worth it.

There have been times when I have emerged from an establishment and wanted to cry and wear a paper bag. A gal's hair is after all, her crowning glory. I was certainly gun-shy until I found Marc of Marc James Hairdressing. He listened, really listened. Together we agreed on a plan and Marc stuck to it without hacking away too many precious centimeters. For the first time in many years I left a salon feeling happy and glam - Marc is a hair guru. The icing on the cake is that this salon is very reasonably priced - a six weekly visit is not going to see you penniless. Unlike most salons who slap on various surcharges for long hair, this team operate in the real world and charge very fair prices. The ambiance and decor is Parisian chic with a classical feel - it is simply a beautiful space with an elegant vibe. The shampoo chairs are like uber comfy lazyboys, ensuring you won't lock into spasms by the time your wash is over. To top off your experience, they offer a decent range of beverages to enjoy while you are pampered (including a darned great coffee brewed as it should be). I found this salon through word-of-mouth and in the tradition of 'pay it forward' I have sent many of my clients to Marc James. Every single one of them were as thrilled as I was. Be sure to book in advance as Marc is understandably popular.

The owners Leigh and Dabien are the sweetest people ever and make every trip an asbolute scream. All the hairdressers are super lovely and you get a 5 star feeling when you go in for your treatment. As a blonde with foils, I struggle to find somebody who can get the colour just right and do foils so well, but Leigh kicks over any others I have had touch my hair before. My sister now goes here too and loves Ellie. And we used them all for both of our weddings and everybody commented on our hair. I reccomend this place until the cows come home. Champagne, beer, hot chocolate coffee ... you name it! And reasonably priced for a 5 star hairdresser.

I like to go for the quality service and beautiful, airy salon, but only when I'm feeling particularly cashed up. On entry you'll be given a herbal tea and a hand towel before your appointment begins. The stylists and colourists are all pleasant and knowledgeable. My results have always been good, however the overall costs always stretches out the time between visits. One of my favourite features of Orb is the opening hours - Tuesday to Thursday open until 9pm and from 8am on Saturdays - so you'll usually be able to get an appointment at a time that suits you. A nice place for a treat, but if you're looking for something simple and cheap, try elsewhere.

Arrived early was greeted nicely and all went well until my stylist was blow drying my hair, I immediately noticed that there was an obvious line of colour difference about a centimetre from the scalp. I waited until I was sure that it wasn't just a single patch but across my head. My stylist said nothing and I eventually realised that if I also said nothing they would have let me leave without correcting it. This would have embarrassed me significantly. When I pointed the colour line out they agreed and set about fixing the issue. Unfortunately my stylist then went off and delegated my second washing and blow-dry to a junior, returning only to finish my fringe. At the end of four hours of my life I was not offered any form of apology, nor any compensation apart from the front of salon manager offering to ring me in a couple of days. When I got home my husband noticed orange dye on the back of my leg as well as dye in the opening of my ear canals as well as outer ear. Now mistakes happen and I can understand and forgive that but what really upset me was that a hair professional would have let me leave with a less than optimal result.
