I couldn't ask for anything more than his happiness independent of us. They have the largest indoor play area of any daycare in Minnesota. They use cloth diapers, as do we, so that is a huge plus. They feed him organic foods with lots of fruits and vegetables with water, so he is developing healthy eating habits and he no constipation issues (I'm in healthcare, so I know it matters). We were so excited to start in the infant room at Tierra Windom, and unfortunately, it was such a…read moredisappointing experience. Here are the reasons why: 1. 2 out of the 3 teachers only spoke Spanish. The only bilingual teacher did not arrive until 9 am. 2. The layout of the "front desk" is odd. It is not on the level you enter the building, and it is not staffed. If you have a question and cannot speak Spanish, there is no one to ask. 3. The building does not seem secure. There are multiple entry points, and no one is monitoring who is coming and going. 4. Poor communication-they did not return my phone calls regarding medical issues that occurred at the school. 5. Daily reports were not completely filled out, so it was difficult to know what she was eating/not eating. 6. The infants went outside 2x during the 3 months we were enrolled from June-September. 7. The infant & toddler rooms have no natural light. 8. They advertise "wholesome & organic" food, but the majority was processed and high in sugar. 9. My daughter would be starving every time after leaving Tierra. When I inquired if seconds were offered, I was told infants could share their neighboring child's plate if they didn't finish. 10. They dumped unused breast milk without communicating this to parents. 11. The owner refused to inform other parents when there was a communicable disease in the room. (pinkeye) 12. 2 of the 3 teachers in my daughter's room were not warm and friendly. They definitely seemed overwhelmed. 13. The room was not staffed 4:1 in the morning until 9 am. 2 things they did well-the head teacher was fantastic. The artwork we brought home was great.

It was a really bad first daycare experience. They were not child-focused, family-compassionate,…read morecommunity-oriented or organized. They treated our family with very little regard. For a center that advertises working with each child based on their unique needs and welcoming communication with parents... They fell way short. Red flags started during the paperwork process: contracts stated different things than what they told us. This included a much higher daycare price and a large yearly fee they never told us about. No explanation was given for major inconsistencies. Our toddler had a hard time transitioning into this daycare, struggled more than other kids. Her demeanor changed drastically within days, and it concerned us. On day two, they shared that their strategies did not work on her. They had no other plans to support her. They asked us to pick her up hours early daily due to her crying. We agreed to do so. We never got access to teachers so we cannot speak about the teachers. Only access to the daycare head. We had to repeatedly, kindly ask for school info they sent other parents and didn't send us. We tried to ease our toddler's transition from home, wanted to help her understand what was happening and who her teachers are but couldn't because we didn't have basic info, not even teacher names. They eventually sent us some (not all) of the info, but seemed inconvenienced. We worked with what we had. They did not seem interested in learning much about our kiddo or taking a unique child-centered approach. They did a cry it out method, leaving her to stand alone at the door for hours by herself. Our child became somber and looked defeated. It broke our hearts. Getting dressed in the morning resulted in panic and crying. She became terrified of leaving the house, even to play. This was not normal. On Friday morning, I informed the school we would be a little late because she was having another tough morning. They did not care and would not take her after the 9:00am exact cut off. I found this to be unreasonable when they knew she was struggling and asked us to accommodate them picking up hours early daily. But they wouldn't accommodate even being minutes late. Corporate rules came before child needs. I messaged them that I was losing trust in their willingness to work with us to help my struggling child. The lead of the center called and claimed I called her and her staff "not human". The texts show that never happened. It was about having a human-centered, child-centered approach to my child, but she made it about herself. The conversation was not child-focused at all. She spoke down to us: accused me of expecting her to tend to me all day every day. Accused our family of expecting special treatment. Said she didn't have time for basic admin tasks even though that's her job. Gaslighted me: said she sent teacher names in the welcome packet. Acted like I was overly demanding for wanting info. We checked our emails, we never got a welcome packet. We were just a family new to daycare with a struggling child, wanting to know who her teachers were and other basic info, wanting to support our kiddo. It wasn't an unreasonable ask. It was info they already sent other parents but resisted sending us. She painted us as a demanding, difficult family instead. Our child did nothing wrong but the daycare lead suggested that we withdraw her. We took her up on this offer.  Our parent friends were shocked hearing our experience, never saw this in their daycares. A child social worker expert & friend said my child's reaction was concerning and should have been taken more seriously by the daycare. Don't know if they are understaffed or mismanaged. Don't know if she treats other families this way or if she just had something against us. She didn't even know us. We left after the first week. Though they did not care how this affected our child, we do. She has trauma-like symptoms now. We are undoing the harm with intention and care, she is slowly thriving again. We wish we paid attention to the red flags in the beginning. Stay away from here if you want a child-centered, family-friendly, compassionate, culturally-competent, noncorporate experience.

The teachers are kind, supportive, and genuinely invested in every child's well-being. My child has truly thrived here, receiving educational, emotional, and social support, and I feel complete confidence knowing he is in the best hands. In addition, my older son attends the summer program and absolutely loves it. It offers the same strong sense of community while giving him the chance to learn so much and have a wonderful time. It pains me to have to write an update on our experience at BCEC that ended up with my preschooler…read morebeing unceremoniously kicked out by the CEO, Leah, while, Tessa, the center director was on vacation. Things at BCEC started out strong and both our kids seemed to be doing really well there. We were happy with the infant and toddler teachers up until the day we left. After a few months at BCEC, my oldest daughter was regularly coming home from the preschool telling us how Ada yelled at her. Then we started getting notes sent home every single day outlining seemingly innocuous 4-year-old behavior. "Didn't want to nap." "Didn't want to sit still during story time." We weren't seeing any of the problem behaviors at home that BCEC was insisting were happening at the daycare. It got to the point where Tessa told us that she thought that our daughter needed to be evaluated for autism. We were shocked. We had no reason to believe that our daughter had autism, but we trusted BCEC because they were spending the whole day with her so we worked with the school district to have her evaluated. This whole time we were in regular communication with Tessa. We were coming in for regular meetings. We were bringing all sorts of tools to school to try to help our daughter follow the rules and schedule. Tessa ASSURED us that if they decided to "refer our daughter out" that they would give us plenty of time to find another daycare for her. When the school district came in to observe our daughter in her class the administrator told us that she spends time in A LOT of schools and she found the BCEC preschool class to be one of the most poorly managed classrooms she's observed. The curriculum was not age appropriate where Ada was expecting 3, 4, and 5 year olds to sit at tables and work on projects for over 30 minutes at a time. And when these poor kids couldn't sit still for that long she would yell at them. The administrator reported that our daughter was actually doing a good job of trying self regulate in a this very loud and chaotic environment, but even when she would try to go off by herself and sit quietly in a corner or under a table, the teaching staff would insist that she sit with the big loud group of kids. The administrator observed our daughter trying to play quietly by herself when a group of boys ran over and started hitting her with pillows which amped her up, but the teacher only yelled at our daughter for running with pillow not the boys who started the interaction. It was so bad that the school district administrator reached out to the executive team at BCEC to offer to provide some training on classroom management. The conclusion was that our daughter does not have autism, probably has ADHD, and the staff in the preschool classroom did not have the skills or desire to accomodate her. It was during this time that Tessa went on a two week vacation and I received an email at 5:30 PM on a Friday night from the CEO, Leah, who we had not interacted with AT ALL on this issue, that they were kicking my daughter out of the daycare and her last day would be the following Friday. Talk about a stressful time scrambling to find another daycare. The whole experience was so traumatic for my eldest daughter that she now refuses to speak Spanish.
