Yelp Review 2026 #281:…read more
I love going to museums. While I was in Santiago, I was walking around the city to eat, check out different places, and visit libraries and museums.
When I went here there were high school kids outside the museum who were probably here on a field trip. I'm glad, I got here as they were leaving. I had a quiet and peaceful experience.
Opened in 1880 - Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes is regarded as the oldest art museum in South America. It is free to visit which is the best part. But you cannot bring a bag - you have to put them in a locker. Taking videos and photos are not allowed in the galleries. You can take pictures of the main hall. Signs and info for each art piece are in Spanish only but quite easy to translate in English.
The building itself is quite beautiful. They have a pretty vast collection of Chilean and international art - paintings, sculptures, photographs, prints. It was a good introduction to Chilean artists you wouldn't otherwise read in art history books and big international museums like the Louvre, Musee d'Orsay, Rijksmuseum, etc.
