Let me start by saying that I would never in a million years ever do anything but get out, take…read moresome pics, visit the gift shop, then leave. I've never been here before this time. My husband on the other hand, was like a kid in a candy shop and talked about nothing else but stopping at South of the Boarder. But hey, I needed to experience it so I can write about it, right... so why not?!?!?!?
We were tired and weary from a very long road trip from New York. My son and I wanted to continue on and find a place closer to our final destination, which was Disney World in Florida. My husband, however, decided that he no longer wanted to trudge on and suggested we stop at SOB for a bite to eat and possibly stay the night. It was late, going to be getting dark and the only thing open beside the motel was the restaurant and gift shop. NOTE: After about 8 pm, that's about it for the activity in this area.
The gift shop to me was the best part of this whole experience. That and getting pics of my guys with Pedro haha. The gift shop is huge and has a great selection of stuff!! We got a tee-shirt, a shot glass, a coffee mug, a fridge magnet, and even a beautiful dream catcher. That's where it ended for me. The food was disgusting. I'm sorry Pedro, but it was horrible. The room was horrible. My son and I protested, but we lost and husband went and booked a room. (My husband missed the part where there was only one other car in front of the dozens of rooms they offered. That might've tipped others off, but not my husband, bless his heart).
The room was one for the books that's for sure. The smell. The bugs. The dirty floors in the bathroom. The toilet that was a foot and a half off the floor. The sink that only came up to crotch level. The bugs. (NOT BEDBUGS. My son and I ripped both of the beds apart looking for that before even sitting on the edge of the bed). I did a test and the second we turned off the lights, I turned them back on again and just in that few seconds two little bugs came out of nowhere. I was so skeeved out. Then another bigger one in the bathroom. We all slept in our clothing because wanted as little as possible of our bodies touching the bed.
** (I have a video and will post it when I edit it to protect the privacy of others in the video.)
Upon waking at about 4 or 5 am, the first thing you seen when you walk out of the room is a huge, lit up water tower with " S O B " staring you in the face (will post that pic as well) - which upon seeing that we were hysterically laughing because, I mean how appropriate!!!
It wasn't anything I'd ever do again (eat at the restaurant or stay at the motel) but I would stop for pictures and during day to check out what else is there. Except the reptile "lagoon" - it's a dug out hole in dirt filled with water with a fence around it.
We look back now and have some good laughs about it, and I know that is all my husband was looking for. An experience that we are still talking about two weeks later!!! A place to visit but stay away from the food and lodging.
