This is a lovely little book shop, situated half way up Bold Street. It's very, very cheap. Last time I went in it had loads of cheap paperbacks, I think they were three or four for a fiver, and kids book we're four for a fiver too. They don't seem to have new, or bestselling books very often, but I did get a brilliant copy of The Picture of Dorian Grey in a leather binding for £8. The RRP was £50!
Downstairs they have loads of cheap art stuff, but unlike most other cheap art stuff I've bought, the quality was good too. Not the best ever, but unbeatable for the money.
The shop is kind of small, but absolutley loaded with stuff. Not in an untidy way, but it can mean that you can easily miss stuff thats hidden behind or under piles of other stuff.
The staff are really helpful, and seem to know everything in the shop off by heart! No small feat once you've seen the ammount of stuff in there.
They also sell cheap plastic kids toys, but I'd avoid those; I got some for a friend's child and it broke into small parts really easily which was a bit of a choking hazard.
My only complaint about The Works is that they don't have a lift or any way for a wheelchair user to get downstairs, and sometimes the aisles are a bit narrow in a wheelchair, but the staff always ask if I need a hand, and will fetch stuff from downstairs or a top shelf for me without complaining or saying just a minute then wandering off and doing something else for ten minutes, which is surpisingly uncommon, especially in small places that only seem to have a few staff. read more
