The Rising Sun is a pub nestled amongst the row of houses just on the edge of Epsom town centre. The first time I was there I followed the recommendation and succinct directions from another pub owner when I was in search of a pub lunch. Despite it's slightly out of the way location in and amongst residential houses and its recessed, unassuming entrance, the pub is bigger on the inside, extending some way back with a friendly-sized garden for the rare sunny days. The pub offers a variety of ales and cider, but what impressed me most was the selection and quality of their food. On the most recent visit on a Saturday afternoon, I had the grilled red gurnard served in a grapefruit sauce, accompanied by a salad of spinach, lamb's lettuce, grilled courgettes, capers, and a gorgeous vinaigrette. My partner had the guinea fowl with a walnut stuffing served on a bed of mustard mash. The ingredients were fresh and presentation appetising, rivalling a mid-priced restaurant in quality and presentation but with a pub-friendly price tag. I highly recommend dropping by for a pint or a meal, especially on a sunny day to enjoy the use of their beer garden.

I was deciding between two dishes and ultimately went on the waiter's recommendation for their seafood stew, apparently new on the menu and well received by other patrons. I wasn't disappointed when the dish arrived on a wooden platter. The visual and smell made my mouth water, and I couldn't wait to tuck into my meal. The fishes came in chunks to allow me to taste the freshness and sweetness of each piece of seafood on offer, and enormous flavours bursted with every mouthful. If only I had room for dessert.
