Saved by the... appetizers? This place is basically like Ale Mary's in Royal Oak, but without the charismatic and friendly service. While the atmosphere gave off a warm, rustic vibe, the service left a lot to be desired. Before going this Friday evening, I read old reviews and saw (management/owner?) reply to them, so I was hoping previous complaints regarding service have been addressed... they haven't. Upon walking in, the host was less than friendly. No smiles, no greeting. In fact, we felt out of place! She sat us at a table by the window where we proceeded to watch our server serve those who came in AFTER us, and then waited 15 minutes for our server. Our server was friendly, but clearly exhausted. (Perhaps understaffed or there's lack of communication amongst servers and hosts is the issue here?) After 15 minutes my date and I practically knew the menu by heart, yet our waitress proceeded to take our drink orders, leave before we could say a word, arrive 5 minutes later, ask for our appetizer order, leave hastily, arrive 15 minutes later, ask for our meal order, left again. Although food came out prompt enough, the wait was my first impression, and a poor one at that. Our burgers were decent. Beware vegetarians: A prior veggie poster stated the portobello burger was great, however glancing at the menu today, the portobello comes stuffed with Italian sausage. Will possibly return again, but will keep my visit strictly to appetizers and alcohol. And probably a spot at the bar where service is in reach. read more

Went on opening night so the place was slammed. Waited 35 minutes for a table, but waited it out at the very nice bar. The space is well done and with a large square marble topped bar int the middle with the bartenders inside the square. The drink choices were plentiful and high end, but the bartenders were not billed as mixologists and the drinks weren't called craft. The prices were on the higher side, but that seems to be the norm these days. $9 for a Bullitt Rye on the rocks for example, but some wine choices in the $7 - 10 range, I've seen worse. I had a pinot noir that was ok, a bit light in flavor, so I'll try something else next time. On to the food choices. A good mix of basic for those that don't like to try new things and interesting options for those that do. I had the lamb sliders and an order of grilled vegetables. My friend had chili and onion rings (basic stuff). Other choices were duck confit over fries w/poutine, or roast beef sliders, fish tacos w/jicama, design your own pizza, some yummy sounding flatbread choices, so lots of things to try on return trips. The 3 lamb sliders were very good with pickled onions and tzatziki sauce. The grilled veggies came out and it was carrots & onions in a brown sauce. I was very confused. When our waitress came back I asked her if she was sure if this was the correct dish because it appeared to be carrots & onions scooped out of a stew in a brown gravy. She said she didn't know but would find us some actual grilled veggies. She came back with a portobello mushroom, red pepper, zucchini, yellow squash and a tomato all grilled in a balsamic vinegar. Not sure if that was what we were supposed to get or if they whipped that up. My friends chili was just ok, kind of thin and lacking in flavor, so that was a miss and it wasn't very filling. I thought the battered onion rings were very good. The decor was ok, not terribly inspiring, but they're trying to invoke a prohibition era feel I guess. The wood walls were a bit dull and our fake wood grain table was not aesthetically pleasing. There's obviously pent up demand in Grosse Pointe for another place to eat and mingle that falls between high end and diners and the crowd last night proved that. I hope they keep up the standards. For opening night the staff did an admirable job. They had 2 or 3 hostesses trying to manage everyone and they stayed calm while trying to get everyone seated. Biggest bottleneck seemed to be the ordering station - there were only 2 and the waitresses were stacked up trying to get their orders into the computer. Really cool atmosphere, but super busy! Came on a Tuesday night around 5:30 and had about a half hour wait for a table for two. We sat at the bar and ordered drinks while we waited then we ended up just ordering food at the bar because we didn't want to continue to wait for a table. The bartenders are very attentive to your needs and made great drinks! The food didn't come out very fast, but it was busy, and we weren't in a hurry so it wasn't a huge deal. Around 7:00 it got very busy to the point where people were standing all around the bar which could be annoying to people sitting at the bar. I would definitely come back again once all the excitement dies down a bit. read more

I'm posting this brief review of The Whiskey Six after two dinnertime visits. TW6 is a welcomed addition to the limited Grosse Pointe dining scene. It strikes me as an Ann Arbor establishment with an older demographic. With a little seasoning and experience, I hope it will be a success. Early impressions: * The beer selection is long but unimaginative. Come on TW6, take some risks! * The hostess and bar servers are terrific. Friendly, casual, and fast. Can't ask for more. * Food servers are between very good and trying to be. Still learning, they get a B+. * Burgers are excellent, fish tacos not so great. Salads are very good. Haven't tried much more than those, but stay tuned, we will be back and will update. * Parking across the street is 75 cents an hour. **update** I'm updating my review because I just had another experience of Whiskey Six and it didn't help my image of the place. The food was okay - nothing amazing people kinda just a step up from bar food - but the service people. That's what kills me about this place. It's got such a handsome exterior and interior, neat atmosphere, but man oh man are they missing the target when it comes to service. Not sure if maybe our waitress was just new to the job? But she kept making rookie mistakes and was just odd. As a former waitress myself I'm pretty forgiving and patient with staff because I know personally how stressful of a job it is. But this lady had hardly ANY tables and we had very little attention given to us. Long, long waaaaay too long gaps of time where she just never came. I was happy to visit with my girlfriend who I was with but man... Still. Also, oddly enough where I was sitting the tiniest spiders kept falling on me! Eeeek! So creepy and nasty so I moved to another place in the booth. ** end of update ** I was so excited to try this new place out. I've been sneaking peeks inside of it ever since they began construction. I was disappointed though when we finally came by. I stood by the door once I walked in like a deer in headlights waiting for someone to approach me to seat me. No one came and I felt awkward so I went and found a waitress who was cleaning up in the back. She looked like I had pulled her out of some trance and when I asked if I should seat myself she just looked even more confused. It was late at night (around 10:30) and apparently they don't serve their usual menus at that point. I understand sometimes that's the protocol for some places so alright. Just a bummer. We ended up getting some burgers and they tasted decent. I'll come back and try this place again. Just not the greatest first impression because of the staff. read more

Got there on Friday night at 6:15 and was promptly seated in the back which looked to be less fun than the front section but probably a little quieter. Had very low expectations based on reviews but found it to be very friendly and attentive. My friend recommended the brussel sprout app and it was deliciously different from the many tired versions I've had. Then we both had the apple brie sandwich which was divine. It was beautifully served with a green salad and cut of fries. We loved it. They don't scoff at you for wanting a domestic beer, bring it quickly, and check back. My friend and I joke that we have aged out of many bars because we still want a Bud sometimes. Try this place. Eat and drink without judgement. My wife and I went to Whisky Six and were meeting a friend from Royal Oak for dinner. The place was almost empty (6pm, weekday) and we got a table, ordered drinks, and explained to our server we were waiting for another person for dinner. Server comes back 5mins later and asks if we are ready to order dinner. We explain that our friend hasn't arrived (obviously). This happens again, 3 more times, over the next half hour. I felt like I was in Ground Hog Day. Also felt like we were being hustled out of an almost empty place. Friend arrives after about 35-40mins and the server asks for her drink order and if she's ready to order dinner. She barely sat down. Not having much confidence in this place I order a burger, medium rare. I get what looks like a Gordon Food Service preformed burger very well done. The rest of the food was lackluster as well. But at least it was pricey for the quality, so I guess that makes up for it! I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. Update: The response below is almost laughable. Having to explain to the same server, when the place is almost empty, 4 times, that you're still waiting for someone. Then to have the same server rush over and ask for our dinner order before our guest's butt fully hit the chair isn't good service! It falls somewhere on the obnoxious/stupid scale. I don't ever leave reviews but I must say, The Whiskey Six did an outstanding job for me and my party of 30 last night. My wedding rehearsal dinner there was amazing. Staff allowed us to come early to drop off gifts and cake. The staff was awesome and Tom made it all happen. Pizza, wings, sliders and booze, what more can I ask for. Fast, courteous staff and WONDERFUL FOOD. My entire party really enjoyed their Whiskey Six experience. read more

Stopped in with a few friends one weekend. Sat on the patio. I loved the atmosphere of this place and the drinks that we had were pretty good. My only complaint is spending $10+ for an appetizer of meatballs that were clearly low quality and FROZEN from a bag. Next time I want frozen meatballs I will walk across the street to trader joe's. Aside from my sub-par food experience thus far, I will come back for a second chance. read more

I ordered the Italian sub with sausage. The sausage was literally COLD and not cooked all the way... thought it was just me so I got my friends to confirm it was cold. I clearly didn't eat it and only ate the fries(which were awesome and got this place 2 stars). I told the waitress of the uncooked sausage and she could have not cared any less! Didn't even dock it off my bill-- which in my opinion is bad customer service. If you serve an uncooked sausage to someone and they say hey this wasn't cooked all the way- offer some sort of compensation!! This girl offered nothing. Truly disappointed. I went on a Friday night with a friend, and ordered the W6 burger, and it was one of the best burgers I've ever had! And their fries were the perfect combo of soft and crispy. The ambience was lovely, with a cool rustic look to it and a live band playing. Also very good service. I'll be returning soon! read more

We ordered a drink which we did get.. then hostess seats us at the table next to the hostess station, which was empty when we arrived. The food was good, staff friendly, menu selection good, but the atmosphere is excellent. I ate here twice in one weekend. They have a live band which can be heard in doors or outside on the patio. Here's my issue. After hearing mediocre reviews I decided to go because I live very close and it looks nice inside, plus it's Grosse Pointe so there aren't many options. The server was great. The drinks were drinks. But then I ordered the 'lump' crab cakes. Ok, heres the deal do you know what baader meat is? At the crab processing place, no matter how nice it is, once they finish removing the jumbo lump. claw and lump meat all they have left over is essentially the shell of the crab with little shreds of meat hanging out. This is all pushed into a machine that mechanically strips the remainder of the bits of meat off and crushes the shell. It all comes out of the other end of the machine in a crab mush, baader meat. It is cheap and still made of crab and most definitely not lump meat by any seafood standards or even by the definition of a lump. They squirt it in bags and ship it to use for animal food and guess what else? Crappy restaurants! Now, I've had this type of crab cake before. It tastes good, cause they jam it with seasoning, but its usually just labeled as a crab cake. This either means the owner or 'chef' is probably trying to pull the wool over our eyes or they are unsophisticated when it comes to food. Either way it begs the question, what else is shoddy by design or ignorance? My fiance had the under whelming short ribs. Presentation was basically the same as if you went down a line at a buffet and put scoops of food on a plate, (is that whats happening back there? oh good god!) In any case what I'm getting at it is its not a terrible place but if you want a place with good decor and better food drive like 10 extra minutes and don't even put yourself in a position to feel like you got duped. Or go there and feel like people must've felt like when Applebee's first opened and pay like twice the price. Whatever dude. Also one last piece of advice, general advice, if any part of a restaurant is carpeted don't expect that a chef is carefully curated your meal. It's a cook back there following the company line or some idiot who probably thought it'd be a good idea to carpet his restaurant just like his kitchen and bathroom are at home. arg! read more

Went on Friday night. Restaurant was almost empty but food was still slow. Our waiter, Keegan was pleasant and responsive when he was around. But my biggest concern was the food. Clearly this establishment is struggling and their approach is to cut cost on the food. Our Maurice salads had little else but lettuce, my friends salmon was a micro serving and the shrimp and grits were artless. So if you are thinking, hummm let's try whiskey six consider only for a drink and move to another establishment for your meal. read more

One of my favorite places in the area. Great food, tons of craft beer on tap and every type of cocktail you can think of. The service can be a little slow sometimes but overall, my favorite spot in GP. Take the negative reviews, and most GP-area reviews, with a grain of salt. A lot of the negative reviewers appear to expect a five-star dining experience at two- and three-star establishments. Put W6 in any other suburb and it's rated at least one star higher. read more

Came in after a long day for a late dinner and a drink. Service was immediate, staff polite and attentive. I have been there before and continue to love the history and decor. My favs were the Steak Bites and the Dessert Cocktail. The Steak Bites even heated up deliciously today for leftovers! I've been to Whiskey Six on dates and with my family. It's usually pretty busy and I think it's worth the wait. The food is on point, the servers are attentive, the drinks are reasonable, and the restaurant itself is like nowhere else in Grosse Pointe. It's a gastropub with an upscale feel. The location in the Village of Grosse Pointe is perfect for it. It definitely is up there in competition with all of the new restaurants being built downtown. Now, for the sad parts... #1 I think with a name like Whiskey Six, they should have a vast selection of whiskeys. #2 For lack of better wording, my feelings were a little hurt one of the times I was here. Our server made a comment about how "she could tell I was a Grosse Pointer." I'm actually someone who has experience as a waitress and I always am kind, understanding, and patient. Finally went to the bar to get a beer. Back at the table, I tried to flag down the waitress a few times when she got close. Didn't work. Felt like I was invisible. My friends said they also had to go to the bar to get their second beers. I left without eating or getting a second beer. Probably won't go back. I am appalled by the incredible lack of organization that I was confronted with this evening at Whiskey 6. The awe inspiring lack of dignity by which this organization "functions" is unacceptably rude and careless. As someone who has worked in the service industry, I am confused as to how there are no managerial skills present (or even visible). I waited for upwards of 2 hours for a table I never received. Their phone number does not operate and the hostesses/bartenders offer no consolation. This Establishment is doing a Fantastic Job at destroying their name. They have a horrible reputation across Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne County. This place has been horribly mismanaged since opening the doors and the wait staff is not helping by any means. Their is no consistency with food or service, they can not seem to figure out how to execute a lunch, dinner or bar rush without crashing and burning. Trying to compensate for all that is terribly wrong with this place with a newly written craft cocktail list that consist of cocktails taken from the Menus of Successful Accredited Establishments; meaning they ripped off other people's recipes. Pizza cooks make a good pizza, but it might take an hour to get?! They have a couple of seasoned bar tenders, and a professional server or 2 that has it down, the rest belong at Coney Islands or Diners in Hazel Park. Regardless of the servers skillet and work ethic, they can only work with what they are given and well . . . I have dined here, I will never dine here ever again, and I will never recommend anyone dine here. If you just want to sit at a bar n grab a beer, maybe catch a game, Stephanie, Matt, or Mike will take great care of you, they are Great Bartenders. The interior is nice, as that space finished being renovated 1 year ago. Pretzel sticks don't take long and are great with beers. Pizza is good. Good burger. Careful what you order, it may take like an Hour for something really simple and basic. The bar area is a much needed social hub for Grosse Pointe. Huge selection of liquor and wines as well. After a 90 minute wait finally got a table. Waiter was green - holding the water glasses by the top. Ordered the burgers all around. Two were ok, one was inedible. Bottom line...great atmosphere, horrible food read more

Bummer but the service here is terrible! I live in Grosse Pointe Farms and would love to have a restaurant/bar to go to regularly that is close by. The waitress was obviously not happy with her job which is sad. Very cool environment and the food was decent but because of the service I will not go back. I have seen this place for a while but haven't stopped in. My mother and I decided to give it a try and couldn't be any happier, the food was amazing. Our waitress, Jessica, was the most friendly and helpful server I've had. Between helping me find a creative drink and picking the best dessert, she was simply amazing.
