We saw one couple consume three courses before we had one. Also after my first drink and sitting with an empty glass for some time I had to go to the bar for a refresher despite the "table service". However the food was first class and bangers and mash I had and the soup and pear salad my wife had were freshly cooked and were very tasty. One dreams of being a regular at a pub such as this, but it is not quite so much fun when you are not a local.

The food served up from the kitchen is amazing and the menu changes regularly to account for the changing seasons and the available local produce. The amazing inn on a secluded green on the edge of the Ashdown Forest provides the perfect backdrop for a date, or just a good old catch up with friends. It's old world charm of medieval beams and a well used hearth are enchanting, and only add to the pleasure of the experience. At the bar you find the customary local ales and bitters, as well as guest ale options from further afield, all adding to the charm of the pub. IMHO definitely worth the trip to go and hang out, and enjoy the drinks, the food and the atmosphere at this great country inn.

When we pulled up there was a very wary pack of wild deer, maybe about 10 or so, in the back paddock adjacent to the pub. There is a small car park round the side with a few spaces, so we had to be very quiet when we pulled up, so as not to frighten the deer. I managed to snap one pic and Peeww!! Off they went. The pub wasn't built for today's tall people, so there's a bit of maneuvering to be done if you're over 6 foot tall, but once you're in, this place is fantastic. Full of character, cold (and warm...shudder) beer on tap, and a quiet hum of a British country pub. The locals, young and old, seem to enjoy it here, and the staff were very friendly. Service was good, the food came out on time and there was always someone there to pull a pint when required. Apparently there is a nice little beer garden out the back, but when I visited it was closed (it was winter though, so no biggy) Pooh bridge is nearby, so if you're in the area, doing an AA Milne trek, pop past this great little joint and savour some of the cracking English grub. Top notch!

There is a good choice on the menu with something for everyone. My favourite lunchtime sarnie is chargrilled chicken & bacon. delicious ! They are happy to cook something special if you phone in advance. The owners are friendly & helpful. Prices are very reasonable. It is only small (so it may be wise to reserve a table) but there is a garden & decked area at the back with lovely views. This is probably the best pub food in the area at the moment. They are not an all day pub but open 12 till 3pm & 6pm till 11pm. Closed Sunday evening & all day Monday. There is a car park with well hidden entrance. On B2110 the Forset Row to Hartfield road.
