I found this pub purely by chance and what a gem it proved to be.Perched on a hillside it has a…read morelarge car park overlooking the valley and village below and has outside seating for the more hardy souls amongst us.On entering we were immediately struck by the cosy atmosphere in the bar,greatly helped by a log fire crackling in the grate.The staff were welcoming and friendly and when we enquired about food we were given the choice of eating in the bar or the restaurant.The bar had a choice of cask ales from the Blacksheep Brewery as well as a range of lagers,wines and spirits.The menu was very comprehensive with most of the food coming from local sources and all dishes are cooked to order.Our meals were well cooked,nicely presented and arrived at the table piping hot.Portion sizes were large and very good value for money.I would place the meals at the top end of pub cuisine and say this is a must visit place if you are in the area.

We treated ourselves (we were on our hols so why not) to some oysters with our drinks. Everything was beautifully presented, but not in an in your face I'm so fancy way, just classy and laid back. As was usual in this great inn were the toiletries, bathrobes, tea/coffee making facilities.....I could go on for ever as there is so much in the rooms. Alistair and Karen are perfect hosts and will do anything to make your stay perfect. I have carried on, somewhat, about the room but one thing that mustn't be missed is the food. Alistair is rarely away from the kitchen. The food that comes out is beyond description. All locally sourced. In the evening we started with a seafood platter for my partner and an awe inspiring lobster bisque for myself. My mouth still waters thinking about it. Main course, for both of us, was a dressed crab. A perfect meal. Breakfast in the morning was a full English for myself. The black pudding has to be tried. My partner had scrambled eggs with smoked salmon. Those plates filled us up for the day and the drive to Edinburgh. If you are after Juke Boxes, slot machines and the other trappings of modern pubs give this a miss, if you are after visiting the Scarborough area try and find this one you shouldn't be disappointed after all they way the pub trade is going at the moment it may not be here for many more years. It might have a selection of real Ales and a cider however all the ones I tried were totally not just poorly kept but I thought actually just plain vile to drink aside from the Red Dwarf. I come from an area where I have access to quite a lot of pubs with multiple choice boards and pubs where the ale is brewed on site. Frankly considering this pub is reasonably unique in Whitby for offering the same the standard of ale in this pub compared to where I come from in the Black Country just does not make sense. The ale quality is frankly really poor. If it was good I would be putting a five star on the pub.

I then managed to get a job working here which was a bonus because we got free food! Now I walk through the forrest and go for a meal when ever me and the girlfriend are in town.
