Emergency Food Bank

I volunteered here through the bank I work for. I was there for 3 hours last week. I worked with a…read moremixture of volunteers, employees and military personnel. I helped bag food and fill shopping carts with food for those who have food insecurity. The military personnel took the time to explain how often people are able to receive food and how. They would need to have a valid id and show proof that they reside in San Joaquin county. Then they are allowed go come twice a month. As long as they don't come twice in one week. And then the last Wednesday of every month is a freebie day. I was so impressed by how much food was filled in the shopping carts. I know the quantity/quality/items are ever changing. But on this day the shopping carts we filled had a carton of eggs, two cartons of organic oak milk, a box of dried goods like pasta and beans, a 6 pack of kids snacks with different cartoon characters(ex. Paw Patrol, Spongebob, Mickey Mouse), a 10 pound sack of potatoes, 10 red pears, 10 pouches of cauliflower, a box of pre-made salads (ex. Caesar or Santa Fe), 2 giant blocks of cheddar cheese, 4 loaves of bread, a giant flat of ground beef, frozen pot stickers, 2 boxes filled with a variety snack sized chips, and a 24 pack of soda! It was amazing how much there was to give, and how many people were helping. It feels good to know people in our city have help and somewhere to go to feed themselves and their families.

I want to start by saying I am truly grateful for the food bank and the service it provides to the…read morecommunity. This resource matters, and I don't take that for granted at all. That said, I was not grateful for how I was treated today by a volunteer named Angela. Angela was the person handing out flyers and directing cars forward into the front area to pick up food. When it was my turn, I rolled my window down about 10 inches, my window is slow and broken, and that's as far as it goes. As she tried to hand me the flyer, it accidentally slipped and fell. Instead of simply handing it to me again, she asked me to roll my window down more. I told her I couldn't and asked her to just give it to me. She then grabbed the paper, walked away, and came back shortly after to comment about how cold it was outside for her. I understand it's cold. However, taking that frustration out on someone in line receiving food felt unnecessary and unkind.. especially during the holidays. People come to food banks already dealing with enough, and no one deserves to be spoken to with attitude over something they can't control. I'm sharing this not to discredit the food bank, but because compassion and patience should be standard in a space meant to serve people in need. I hope this feedback is taken seriously and addressed so it doesn't happen again.
