Lazy Otter - A charming pub restaurant in Ely (2014/08)

What a fantastic find. After reading the recent reviews this must be a different venue to those. A…read morepub by the marina with sweeping lawn down to the river. Plenty of tables on those lawns with fantastic service by two young ladies who must have been worked off their feet going up and down those steps and over the lawn so many times in the day. My partner had a fab crab burger with chips and other sundries. I asked for a ploughmans but, unfortunately, it had been removed from the menu. I, therefore, opted for the deli platter. Big mistake....lol. Not because of the quality of the food but because of the quantity. Enough for two, if not three, people. Meats galore, cheese, olives, massive gherkin and sweet onions. Bread and a balsamic and oil dip. All on a bed of salad. My reply to the young lady when asked if everything was OK. 'Could I have a larger stomach?' I got through most of it, with difficulty. Coronavirus precautions were impeccable. One way in and one way exit. Up one side of the steps, down the other. The bar covered in plastic sheeting, floor to ceiling. Staff serving with ppe masks. Safe for the customers but, more importantly, for the staff who come into contact with so many people. Great pub, fab service and delicious food at a reasonable price. Thank you one and all and I still feel sorry for those two girls serving.

We had a Sunday roast that was coated in an over-floured gravy (most likely to hide the fact that the vegetables were completely flavourless ). The roast pork and crackling was served minus the crackling which was a shame as the crackling was the deal clincher. The staff were all pleasant if a little rushed, perhaps more staff on a Sunday would help. However the outdoor playground was ideal for our two year old and a pint by the river is always a good thing, what a shame the food was noway near as good.

Kirsty (manager) and her staff were outstanding and did an excellent job under a challenging request. My wife and I were in search of a pub/restaurant that could provide food for a group of 15 persons, within 24 hours, and much later at night. The reason for the short notice was another Turkish establishment in Ely, who shall remain nameless and which we will never patron ever again, canceled on us. When we reached out to Kirsty and her staff, and explained our predicament, they were very understanding and professional. They not only accommodated our group, but the food had been previously coordinated in advance and we did not have to wait long for it, and it was very delicious. I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND DINING HERE IF YOU HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY!

So you ask someone where the nearest pub is and they direct you to the Cutter. A proper old English pub with modern sensibilities. Had a decent curry, which they put together for me quickly as by the time we had gotten there (15 minute walk from the station) we only had 30 minutes there before we had to start making our way back to the station. Grabbed a pint, ate my curry somewhat leisurely, and sauntered back to the station. We really should have moved faster, as we got there 2 minutes before our train arrived and almost missed it again! :-) Next time I'm here I'll stay a bit longer, for sure.

My wife, son, and I decided to stop in for dinner here after our trip to Ely to see the cathedral, castle mount, and the other touristy offerings of this unassuming English village. (We had a wonderful time perusing the little town, but that's another matter altogether). We saw this place on our way towards the big attractions and decided to give this place a shot on our way out. We are so glad we did... From the front door you are greeted with their small, unassuming bar and a foyer area where you can sit and drink your pint. A few of the locals were there already imbibing and enjoying a few and were helpful in making my selection of what to drink this evening. We arrived at 4pm and had to wait for 5pm for dinner to be served, but no worries, we past the time playing family games they had for offerings while we waited for the dinner time to arrive. Once it did, we each chose what we preferred from the menu. I chose the quintessential Bangers and Mash, while my wife had their steak, and my son had a hamburger on pretzel bun - all of it arrived fast, fresh, and delicious. As an appetizer we picked the mozzarella balls - a bit small but still tasty and still enough for the three of us. For dessert we each had their sticky toffee pudding with chocolate cake and salted caramel ice cream - it was to die for. The indoor decor is classic "British Pub" to me - all the wood tables, chairs, the dim lighting, it all simply looked good. They also have the biggest and most extensive beer garden I have ever laid my eyes upon - easily a place that can cater a big event like a wedding or big-number birthday. (I know I would celebrate one here, without a doubt.) I think the only nit on the place was the service - though friendly and efficient, I wish they had been a bit more attentive - especially since we ate early on what appeared to be a slow Thursday night. Nonetheless, we walked away more than satisfied and happy to have chose this place to spend the latter part of our day at Ely. If you are ever in the area, this is a must-go-and-try...

The service is timely, appropriate, and friendly. Atmosphere: Inviting, modern with a classic English pub decor, and unique layout. The place has a cool buzz about it, too. Restuarant side of things: More to offer than your average pub grub with some quantity and quality sized plates. We ate the standard fish n chips with mushy peas and it 'hit the spot'. I think it might've been pricier than other dishes I've had in a pub, but given the location and Cambridge itself explain the up-market prices. Bar wise: Good selection of beer, wine, spirits, and cocktail readiness. We mostly drank proseco (by the bottle) on this evening. There is not an outdoor bar area, so if you dine outside you will need to go back inside to get your drinks. What makes this place so special though is the 'easy life' it offers. Sit outside in the sun (should you be so lucky to be here in the summer and on a sunny day) and watch the people float on by in their punt boats, enjoy the views, gaze into the water and out across the river....... more or less it's peaceful, relaxing, and lovely. But in the rain or sun, there's banter to be had with your best mates!
