Back in 1918, Cummings / Moberly built a small sawmill at this location. Even though they had an advantage over other lumber mills in the area because of the close proximity of the railroad, the company went broke in 1920. The mill was then sold to Whitney Company. Was later sold again in 1924 to A.B. Hammond. Under Mr. Hammond's guidance , Hammond mill became one of the largest lumber mill on the West Coast. The smokestack was built by Hammond Co. In 1927. Love visiting here!…read more We have been coming here for years. Located in Garibaldi Oregon you will find this little gem. The turn off can, be a bit hard to find but if you use Google maps it will easily steer you in the right direction. The parking lot is big with lots of spots. This cool little pier takes you out to the bay. There are spots where you can crab and fish off. At the end there used to be a store but it is now gated off. There is also a little rocky beach that you can explore at the bottom of the pier. It gets quite windy here so make sure to bring a jacket and hold on to your hat before it blows away. Once out on the pier the view is nothing short of spectacular. You get a 360-degree view of the bay and surrounding area. Every few years we always make our way back here for a little bit of nostalgia and the breathtaking view.

This is the only eight sided lens on the mainland USA. The other one is in Hawaii There were only two made. Since it is on a high point of land the body of the light house is short. Maybe 20-30 feet. I thought the best part was Cape Meares, with the lighthouse and octopus tree. Cape Lookout, you would have to hike to see any of the lookouts, and Cape Kiwanda was the busiest, which is near Pacific City. Cape Meares has the prettiest views; and the squat lighthouse and octopus tree are must see unique attractions on this loop.

It has a parking lot, somewhat acceptable public…read morerestrooms, easy beach access, picnic tables, plenty of benches to plop on and stare sleepily at your crazy teenaged kids who insist on getting soaked (even though its 50 degrees outside) from above while drinking coffee, and in general is an all around decent place to hang out. There is a food truck serving burgers and shaved ice next door and a little restaurant that is open for lunch or an early dinner. If you buy kites at Flamingo Jim's this is the perfect place to fly them. There is also a faucet maybe two to wash off sandy feet. That last part is super important.

I will say, was not prepared for how cold and breezy the Oregon coast would be in late June, but once we got down to the beach, I understood why this place is such an iconic stop. Haystack Rock itself is absolutely massive in person, rising about 235 feet above the shoreline, and it makes an incredible backdrop for photos. We had a great time walking around, taking pictures of each other, and trying to capture just how impressive it actually is. Apparently, it's also been featured in The Goonies and Kindergarten Cop, which made seeing it in person even cooler. Beautiful scenery, great photo opportunities, and easily one of the highlights of our drive through the Pacific Northwest. Just bring a sweatshirt or hoodie even if your calendar says summer.

Definitely recommend bringing a beach towel for sand viewing or shares and some activities to pass time by. I truly find it rejuvenating and reinvigorating to spend time here. View the magnificent and majestic Haystack rock. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity that we feel so blessed in granted to have this moment in time finally. Relax and watch the gentle waves collapse and cascade by towards you gracefully. As the waves turned back against the ever fading tide, reminders that life worries will always reset, and there was always another day. Geez, upon the Pacific Ocean for endless miles. Let the heart sore and feel what else is out there, let adventure be at sea. Anyways, it's a great perspective in viewpoint hang out spot. And I'm starting to get hungry. Is there any food nearby? Well organized. Easy to book ticket and they were very helpful. Had fun with my brother at the…read morebeach on the steam engine train from garibaldi to rockway beach. Everyone on and off the train were smiling! Little kids loved it too. And as the train rolled by slowly, the people in the shops waved at you and you of course, waved back. Mother's with toddlers stood near the tracks just to wave as it went by. The weather was perfect with lots of sun yet just enough wind to keep you cooled off. Perfect! And rockway felt like it was in a time warp... like a normal Rockwell painting on life magazine! Seriously... felt like you were in 1952's!!! Oh and many people also brought their dogs with them! Wonderful! Only wish it was cleaner and they could fully refurbish the cars. Could be a great organised joint volunteer project... for seniors and teens. All and all we loved it and the town!

It would have been nice to spend more time in Wheeler shopping. The train seems to move at a snails pace in some parts.

In 1869 President Grant appointed Mr. Bayley as the areas first postmaster, and was given the duty of naming this postmark. At the time Giuseppe Garibaldi was Mr. Bayley's hero for unifying Italy and promoting democracy around the world. And thus the township Garibaldi was born. Today Garibaldi still has that small town feel to it. Main Street is lined with stores, hotels and restaurants. Some attraction in town are the Garibaldi Museum, chartered fishing trips, crabbing, clamming, and catching a ride aboard the " Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad". Major employers are Weyerhaeuser Mill and the marina. Garibaldi is a small city with a lot of history and was incorporated as a city in 1946. Garibaldi is worth checking out the next time your in the area ! Enjoy !

5 stars for wilderness areas! The home of the historical 1933 Tillamook Burn, and the 6 year…read morejinx...that repeatedly burned hundreds of thousands of acres of old growth forests. We are blessed to have an area so full of rich diversity and resources. I hike the Elk Creek / Wilson River trails and started from the Elk Creek Campground. The trails are rock covered and steep at times. The water table this year is alarmingly low. However, the forest was lush with ferns, wild flowers, berries and songbirds!

Amazing views! The drive into Ecola was just beautiful, dense forest all around. Currently love in…read morethe desert, so all the green was a treat. We only did the Ecola Point viewpoint which has some short trails from the parking lot. You can see the lighthouse a little bit from some of the views, but probably not as well as grub the lighthouse view trail. Still amazing views tho down into Cannon Beach, haystack rock, etc. If you're going to visit a lot of state parks, I recommend getting the state park pass. Worth the price!
