Mark Dever unapologetically preaches from the Word of God in a region of the country that is desperate for truth. The music was phenomenal, highlighted by natural acoustics and the voices of many joyful Christians. If you are in the DC area and need a great Church that speaks truth directly from the Bible, I would give this place a visit!

However, the community was incredibly unkind. As first-time visitors, we were unsure where to go when we arrived, and no one offered assistance. Despite seeing us looking lost, ushers and other church workers neither greeted us nor helped us find our way. When we finally located the sanctuary and asked about the children's classes, the ushers continued to walk past without speaking, and some looked at us without offering a greeting or welcome. As I walked down the hall, a woman who seemed to be either a church worker or a regular member shoved past me, looked me up and down, and continued on to talk to someone else. During our almost three-hour visit, only three people spoke to us: two ladies who sat near us and one person we happened to know. We are African American, but there were many other African Americans and people of color in attendance, which made the unkindness we experienced even more confusing. This level of unkindness and disregard was something we had never encountered in a church before. It was deeply disappointing to witness such a beautiful and meaningful service, only to see the absence of Christ's love in how the members and workers treated visitors. Despite arriving early and seeing numerous people with "usher" badges, not a single one welcomed us. My hope is that this church, with its beautiful service, learns to demonstrate the love of God they preach about by showing kindness to visitors. Training ushers to greet and welcome newcomers could make a significant difference. We had heard so many wonderful things about this church and were excited to visit. We were hungry for good theological teaching, hymns, and solid Christian fellowship. Instead, we left feeling unwelcome in the community.

We have seen the church go through some very wonderful times with Ministers like Rev. David Eaton and Rev. Dr. Rob Hardies and also some difficult times - especially around the departure of Rev. Dr. Susan Moore, when she left the church. Moving on from the past to today, the church is in great shape. It is very well attended, with newcomers receiving a warm welcome and often returning many more times. Overall it is well managed and well ministered, although it has often struggled with an operating deficit. In addition, as sometimes happens there is a hiccup right now due to some misallocation of funds - some funds which were raised to help with building restoration (it is well over a century old) were used instead to help close an operating deficit. This is being addressed now. The good news is that the church has set itself on a pathway to be able to "live within its means". While it very well attended, there are many attendees who put money in the plate during the service, but do not make a financial pledge. This is now an imporant topic for the church and as I write this, my hope and my prayer, is that everyone/family who attend on a regular basis will be moved to make a pledge - which is important both for the giver, as a personal committment to the church, and to the church officers, for budgeting and financial planning purposes. God Bless all who read this and all who attend the church and all who serve the church. Amen,

All Souls is an amazing place. Having the only original Revere bell in Washington makes it an even…read moremore historical place. The Revere family were rebels, and the Church has been at the forefront of rebelling against the status quo since its foundation. This particular church was founded among others, by President John Quincy Adams, John C. Calhoun and Charles Bullfinch, and it has since been a champion in liberal theology. It was a beehive for the civil rights movement. It was also a center of non-violence and a source of opposition to nuclear arms. The Church recently rededicated the Hiroshima Drawings, a thank-you gift from Hiroshima children following the Church's conveyance of relief supplies after the dropping of the Atomic Bomb. By the way, the Revere Bell, after two hundred years, still tolls on occasions, nowadays each time for the number of Americans killed in action in Iraq during the week. It was Washington's Independence Day Bell until it tolled for abolitionist John Brown's death before the Civil War, another example of the liberal ardor of its members. As to its religious orientation, it is more than a fascinating place. It has the intellectual fervor of William Ellery Channing and Thomas Jefferson personified in the figure of Rob Hardies, and the spiritual awakening of St Gregory of Nyssa in the person of Shauna Lyngood. Their sermons are a credit to both, religious fervor and humanism. As a result, both hard-core thinkers and fervent spiritualists can find a welcoming place there. Also among its firsts, the first public same sex union to be performed in the US happened in its halls. I love All Souls.

I am going to give you a couple tidbits to help you glean insight into a service if you are considering attending. A couple facts about this congregation for those of you who are looking. (I went to the 11 a.m. service) 1. Jeans are perfectly fine - they actually seem preferred. If you want to whip out your suit and bowtie, however, I also saw one person dressed to impress. Take away is just be comfortable. 2. Although MCC is primarily known as the LGBT church, you do not need to identify as LGBT to attend this church. (You will see people of all sexuality types here). 3. There are not many younger people here. If you are in your twenties, you may be one of the few in attendance. 4. The congregants are extremely friendly. Say you are new and you'll have three instant friends. 5. They take communion every week. 6. Average worship at the 11 a.m. seems to be about 50-75 people. 7. They have coffee and cookies after service. 8. Service lasts about an hour.

There's free coffee and snake before and after service, and an overflow area outside the sanctuary for watching services as well. We celebrate the gifts of God that empower us to engage boldly in the struggles of life and care for others with love, justice, and compassion." I have been attending for more than three years, and I really like this place. There is a large, active group of about 40 young adults in their 20s and 30s, and the church has lots of activities for service, worship, and fellowship (aka socializing). On Sunday, the traditional service is at 11:15 am. There also is a 10 am "Sermon Seminar" that I love: there is a Bible reading, then the rector delivers the sermon, and there is a brief period of silence. Next, there is an opportunity to stand and comment, in front of everyone, on the sermon. Often, the comments are as thought-provoking as the sermon itself. PLUS, you can have your coffee with you in the sanctuary during sermon seminar. I love it. Another fun aspect of St. Mark's is the "Pub Lunch," following the 11:15 service. This church has its very own brewmaster! Beer is served with lunch and is delicious. Gotta love the Episcopalians! There are ample opportunities to get involved at St. Mark's, whether you're seeking an inspiring worship experience, a community where you feel at home, or an opportunity to serve others.
