I lived at The Standard for two years during my undergrad. It was overall a great experience. The front desk and maintenance staff are always responsive and helpful. I also enjoyed the amenities such as the gym, pool, and the study rooms. However, the quality of the apartments isn't the best. Plumbing often has issues and the walls are kinda thin. The property often gets damaged/filthy (i.e. the garage doors and stairwells) by some of the residents sometimes but management does a great job addressing those issues. read more

Be warned the property management solely exists to rip students off. My son was charged $900 for "damage" to the walls- and carpets-wasn't any and when contacted management were we told we signed an "as is" lease agreement- which I take to mean they can charge whatever they want. I told them we have photo proof upon check out they refused to budge. Oddly enjoy when I called after move than 5 attempts to contact management- I was told they had a large number of complaints about charges and were working through them- yeah totally seems legit - um not so much. I would never recommend anyone live here. The building maintenance is absolutely embarassing. The entire year I lived there only one elevator worked for at least 80% of that time and the garage door was broken for the last few months. The pool is only open for like 1-2 months out of the school year. The apartments themselves are serviceable but the management will nickle-and-dime you for every penny they can on your way out. Absolutely exorbitant charges for minor issues. Most people also won't realize their rooms are painted multiple different colors seemingly just to cause problems when trying to move out. After almost 2 months, our new light came in and we can see again. It's a little tilted, but at least we don't have to eat dinner in the dark. S/O to the maintenance team who was wonderful as always. Move in went fine, if not crowded. However "improvements" have been ongoing. Trash builds up regularly without cleanup. Apartments are fully wired so upon move in, there was no electricity in entire apartments / rooms. Bathtubs were rusted and unclean upon move in. THE CEILING HAS BEEN LEAKING FOR A WEEK AND MAINTENANCE HAS YET TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. Things will only get done if you message Ashley, the property manager, directly on her personal number. They try to nickel and dime you on everything from insurance to parking to signup. Their leasing is very deceptive. You do not pay per month if rent, but rather "installments" of the entire bill. Renters beware... Worst experience renting an apartment for our son while he attends classes at UVA. We signed a two-person, two-bedroom unit back in August. 2022 Upon a moving day, we realized they placed him in a two-bedroom, four-person unit, and one of the other renters owns a large dog. My son is highly allergic and could not stay in these conditions, not to mention he's 6' 2" and 225 pounds trying to sleep on a single-size bed. I immediately went to the renting office to either move to a different apartment or break the lease, as this is not what we agreed to in the lease agreement. No response; I've contacted this company multiple times and have never gotten a response. They are only interested in scamming college students and their families. read more

This review does not pertain to the overall living experience at The Standard, but rather to management's decisions and priorities affecting residents' safety. As of May 2021, there has been a recent spat of gun violence around Charlottesville. During one incident in a local community behind the building, at least 50 shots were fired on a Friday night, with one stray bullet shattering a resident's apartment. I learned of this through the local police department news and reached out to the front office for a public email addressing the incidents. While they responded privately with emergency contacts and personal support, they declined to notify other residents in an effort to keep the news under wraps. Of note, there was another shooting incident in the same neighborhood not one week later. This transparent disregard for professionalism adds to an earlier incident in the year, when an intruder broke into the building from an unlocked door in the parking garage into a student's room. While we received communications to be vigilant about locking doors, there was no mention of the crime. Contrast these two incidents to several emails that every resident has received over the past year regarding vandalism of the building, presumably by undergraduate residents on weekend nights. Incidents include urination off of balconies, property destruction, unclaimed pet waste, and stolen gym equipment. The Standard's very understandable frustration is managed by threats to the entire building that video footage will be leveraged towards punitive measures for transgressors involving Charlottesville police. These emails about petty crime in themselves are not cause for a poor review. However, when juxtaposed with their silence about break-ins and shootings, they demonstrate sheer lack of regard for residents' wellbeing. Doing the right thing is more important than enticing future residents. Please do better. The building is overpriced for motel quality rooms. If the maintenance team were not so fast to fix things, I would have left. Our sink is being held up by zip ties. Rent increases if you resign to your own apartment, and there is no benefit to staying here. read more

Worst apartment building in Charlottesville. Looks very nice but it's dirty and cheap. They provide no protection for your things and do not care if anything is stolen from their parking garage that has one camera and no security. My moped got stolen twice and they paid no remorse either time. It is impossible to get ahold of the office. They charge you insane amounts for their shitty furniture if it's damaged in the slightest. The hallways stink and are full of dirt. I've had poor living experiences in the past, and the Standard by far exceeded my expectations. The maintenance staff was very responsive and quick to resolve any issues I had in the apartment, of which there were few throughout the year. My only complaint is the loud, disrespectful undergraduate residents who would blast music into the courtyard at odd hours of the night. read more

The Standard is the absolute WORST. Price is insane. On my first night (1 week ago) there was a shooting outside my window (which faces the ghetto) so close that the multiple shots fired woke me up. And then last night there was so much screaming going on around midnight we had to call the non emergency police number to get them to stop. Maintenance is AWFUL I waited days for my toilet to get unclogged. And our light has been broken since we moved in. Not to mention THE POOL STILL ISNT OPEN. And I'm not sure if the golf simulator is still broken but it was when I first moved in. And they way they advertised our apartment was absolutely false advertising. We believed we were going to have a balcony because that was the way the apartment was in every layout plan and in our tour but when we actually got here we learned that apparently only 25% actually have a balcony. And just today I got a fine for leaving a box by the elevator which literally everyone has been doing since day 1. read more

I am a student at the University and I've been a resident here for over a year now and overall it's been a great experience. The staff is friendly and accommodating, and super helpful with any issue I've had. The units themselves are very nice, simple and functional. The amenities are great, the gym is stocked with a ton of equipment, the sauna is an awesome feature and the pool is unbeatable. Most of the time the building is very clean, and any messes are taken care of promptly when brought to the attention of the front desk. Maintenance also does a great job of taking care of all the requests I've made within 24 hours. The building is a little on the far side from grounds, about a 20 minute walk to the lawn. However, there is a bus station out front and it's also much closer to the downtown mall than other housing options (about a 30 minute walk). For the most part the building is safe, with keypad entrances to the building, each floor, each unit and then each individual bedroom within the unit (which only your key will unlock). The only reason I wouldn't give this place 5 stars is because it is a very large property with a lot of residents it can get a little disorganized at times. The building was also constructed rather quickly, and that's evident in little things like the caulking on the bathtub or the electrical work. Nothing major and nothing that can't be fixed but can sometimes give off the impression of a rushed job. The parking situation can also be tricky and pretty expensive, and the garage fills up quickly. Overall this is a great property and I was happy to resign my lease with the Standard! read more

Horrible, heartless management. 100% only care about money, as seen by the way they nickel and dime you and are not flexible when it comes to anything. Landmark definitely is a typical slumlord that I for sure with not ever rent from again. Ceiling has been leaking for a while and they said they were going to come back but never did. Some leasing agents are very nice, while upper management is disgustingly cold and literally does not care about your concerns. Walls are way too thin as I can hear my roommates conversations and everything in the kitchen/living room. They stopped providing coffee cups under the guise of environmentalism when really they just know if there's no cups less people will use coffee and they won't have to buy more. It is a decent option compared to other living spaces in C'ville, but overall, the quality of work is subpar and definitely not worth the amount we are spending. The stairwells flood, there are leaks in the study rooms, and there are leaks in the elevators. I put in a maintenance request in August, and it wasn't fixed until mid September. The door to the garage on the second floor was jammed for a month. The walls are thin and I hear constant noise coming from the floor above me. My rent was taken out twice in the month of September, and I had to tell management to replace it multiple times. I am less than impressed. read more

This place is absolute garbage the extent of which I can't even begin to put into words. Everything is constantly breaking, my sink is held up by literal zip ties, the dryer sounds likes it's exploding whenever it's used, the hallways smell like trash, the tv shuts off in the middle of watching anything and runs like a 2007 windows pc with a virus, the rooms are tiny with half a pantry size closet, all of which would be fine if I were paying a humble rent. The price is absolutely ludacris on top of which they charge $80+ per month for parking and tow their own residents who are already being scammed by their rent. They make up ridiculous charges to pin you with after you move out ("bed rub": $250 -- of course the bed will rub against the wall after two years of living here?????) which you know are a thinly veiled attempt to make free bucks because if you call them about it they'll drop the charge because they obviously bank on people not questioning the charge. They never answer the phone, instead you'll reach an "offsite calling center" where third party people will just reply with "i'll pass the message along", then when you go downstairs to the front desk all the workers are on their phones or talking to each other. The package room is just boxes upon boxes stacked without rhyme or reason. The walls are so thin you can hear quiet conversations from next door. Their selling point, the pool, is closed half the time during the few months it can be open due to "maintenance". They make you take all boxes down to the parking garage or charge $25 per box left in the trash room. Every crevice of this building is built to squeeze money out of you and everyday i live here i get filled with more and more rage. With a guess of over 600 apartments, an average of 3 people each paying $1000 per month, you can imagine how much this place makes. Now add in all the extra stuff they charge you for. Then take a look at how much they put into building the place or maintaining it. Nothing about this place is luxury or made to please the resident it is made to make the most profit, every minor thing comes with at least a $100 price tag with it (don't want to walk down 6 flights of stairs and down 30 foot long hallways just to dispose of a box? fined. bed pushed against the wall? fined. have a friend visiting for one night and need to park? charged. pet? charged. all on top of $1100+ rent for max $500 quality. the list goes on and on) and the management is the worst you'll ever come across. Note that none of this pertains to the actual maintenance staff-- the maintenance staff works hard and tries their best to keep this place up and running and are always kind, this is all about management-- fixes absolutely 0 problems and creates 300. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone, it's no wonder everyone I know who has lived here has moved elsewhere. Don't be fooled by the marketing, model apartments, pictures, or the obviously fake reviews on google that all give it 5 stars and start with the exact same sentence; this place will make you develop high blood pressure at the ripe age of 20 that spikes anytime the standard management is mentioned. Additionally, notice how reviews on third party platforms are all generally negative while all google reviews give 5 stars and are worded similarly-- I can only assume the 30 5 star reviews within one hour are all from the people working at the front desk who spend their days making burner accounts and leaving fake reviews while forwarding calls to an offsite center instead of managing the building. read more

When I first moved into my apartment nothing had been cleaned; there was rotting food in the fridge and spread across the kitchen counter, the entire apartment reeked of weed smoke that is still embedded in the carpeting, the bathrooms had caked up brown sludge on the bathtub, in the toilet, and sink, and after reporting this to the management we were only given a $25 dollar voucher. Apparently, this was not a unique problem, several other people moved into uncleaned rooms. The apartments themselves could be nice if they were up kept, but the management is absolutely horrendous. It took weeks to have them change the air filter to get rid of the weed smoke. Every time I filed a work order, it was marked as completed when nothing had been done, which was frustrating. Given that the Standard charges obscene rental prices, the least one could expect is that everything would be in order before you move in. On top of which, they had almost two months from when the previous tenant vacated their apartment to when we moved in to have the apartments cleaned. Parking costs are insane at $85 a MONTH. Lastly, the internet connection is terrible (you need to manually connect to their wifi every time you leave and come back), and when there is so much as a mild rainstorm the entire power in all apartments goes out. You can hear everything in this apartment. And noise complaints can be filed but they only charge some people the fee so that policy is applied unfairly. Additionally the property staff always have an attitude and always talk down to residents. It is rare to have a pleasant conversation with them. There has been a hole in the garage for months, and they said they called someone to "fix" it but they just put cones on top of the hole. There is always parking for your car, but the garage is falling apart and poorly made so I wouldn't be surprised if it collapsed one day. Rooftop, gym and patio are nice, can't complain much about that. However it does not make up for the constant attitude the Standard gives and their lack of empathy for their residents. They also gave us our apartment with the wrong furniture and there was blonde hair everywhere. None of us living in the apartment were blonde so it must have been from past residents. The countertops were sticky. There was a huge bag of cigarettes on our balcony (none of us smoke). There were stains on the pool table. And the Standard even admitted to us they must have skipped over our apartment so it was never cleaned or checked to see if it was furnished correctly. When they sent their cleaning staff to clean it, it was one woman who only had chlorox wipes. Landmark properties makes very one sided contracts that barely benefit the residents at all. I would suggest you read the contract extremely closely. read more
