My sons started coming here last summer to work on speed and conditioning as well as overall strength training. Cale is a great trainer and the junior/senior classes are well run and the class size is perfect for the kids to learn and grow as athletes. Of late, they have been taking Billy's class on Friday and he's incredible. He really hones in on the small details and gets the best out of both of them. Anna is a new instructor and is great as well, has a lot of enthusiasm and attention to detail as well. Claire is a rock star for communication and getting their accounts set up. I've been attending the Spot for a year now, and the quality of training cannot be beat. Previous to joining The Spot I had a couple years experience of doing crossfit. My primary goals are to stay fit, learn to lift weights, and improve my health in a way that was fun. I get bored and side tracked easily. I like group classes because the regular schedule and coaching keeps me on task and committed. If you are someone who is looking at crossfit or had done it before, and you're looking for something that makes sense but is a generalized routine, this is the place for you. The only difference is that The Spot actually makes sense. Their training routines are designed to get you fit in an intelligent way, not in a way that is unnecessarily intense and frustrating for the sake of being intense. What really impresses me about The Spot is their intelligent and insightful coaches. I have learned and changed a lot about my body and body mechanics since being here. On my first day a coach noticed my back was hurting from a lift and we have since spent the last year being given the appropriate exercises I needed to lift properly and utilize muscles that were previously under utilized. I'm no longer riddled with constant back pain from working out. The quality of my lifts such as front and back squats and deadlifts have improved because I am using my core to stabilize now. The GAINZ have been more than what I have lifted on the bar, but also how well it feels now. The primary set up of a workout session at the Spot goes as such: warm up, main lifting block, then 2 or 3 circuits focused on accessories and conditioning. It's impossible to feel bored. Much of the accessory work involves balance and stability exercises, which I have noticed have really paid off especially in the leg strength environment. The place is very open to a range of body types and back grounds. I've never been very athletic, but all the exercises are designed so that everyone is doing the same thing and no one is ever ahead or behind, yet everyone is being appropriately challenged. I exercise alongside incredible athletes, and I also get to watch new comers get a great workout while being included with the class the whole time. I highly recommend The Spot. I will probably be attending as long as I am in Columbus and The Spot is open. My favorite coaches are Billy, Steve, Levi, Jay, and Maeve. They all know their stuff. They know how to be encouraging. I have been going to The Spot now for several months. As a woman who has never enjoyed going to a gym, they have made me excited from day one. I have had the pleasure of working primarily with Maeve who took the time to understand my goals and help tackle my fears and set up a fantastic plan. She follows up with me to see how I am feeling the day following, she provides me with helpful tips on ways to maximize results outside of the gym and truly cares about my physical and mental well-being. She has truly been a fantastic coach/trainer who I will continue on with without hesitation. When you walk in you are greeted with a smile from the entire staff who knows you by name and are excited to be with you on this journey. My two girls who play in club soccer (8 and 10 years old) also did speed and agility training with Chelscie and Levi over the summer. It has proven to be very beneficial now that we are a month into soccer season. The techniques that were taught to them and the strength they gained has been very noticeable. They had a fantastic time and were always eager to go and were upset to only go twice a week! We are looking forward to continuing our training with them in our off season. My husband also works out here, the staff is extremely accommodating to his schedule as he has very limited time following work and before the kid's sports start in the evening. They have all of his workout stations set up with the appropriate weight for him so they maximum his time while he is there. I strongly encourage everyone, no matter what your age is or where you are in your workout journey to come in and see what they are all about. Pros: not a typical gym! A trainer is with you every session. Great workouts. Variety of classes. Several trainers. Knowledgeable staff. Very friendly and down to earth. Affordable. Free 30 day trial! Cons: schedule is wonky. Review: I found this place many months ago and signed up. I loved my 30 day trial, but being a mom of 4, finding a good time to go is super hard. I either have to go at 5am or at 7pm. I have a 10 month old and 3 older kids who are in school. Even if I have someone to stay with the baby in the afternoon, The Spot is closed. There is a large gap of time in the middle of the day that the gym isn't open to the public, which really hurts my ability to go. I am going to suspend my membership because of that reason alone. But if you can make the schedule work, this place is the best I've found! read more

I joined the Spot Athletics about a month ago. I was looking for a gym that would push me and motivate me to start exercising again. The spot does exactly that for me. Every class is personalized to your ability and the coaches really take the time to make sure you are performing to your ability as well as push you to succeed past that. Met Con has been a great addition to my weekly routine. The early class is a great way to start the day and makes me infinitely more productive for the rest of the day. It takes some time, but you get that back in energy and focus so it's worth working into your schedule. The work outs use a lot of major muscle groups while you do every day type movements so I feel stronger and more limber than I have in a long time. It's a holistic type of strength that feels great. I have to say that this place is great. Their initial assessment before I even started revealed a weakness in my lower back that doctors told me was part of aging. The trainers here worked with me in core training and metcon classes to take care of an issue that has been bothering me for years. I love the way the trainers are always assessing each individual, even in group training, and making sure all exercises are done properly. Because of this, I don't have the aches and pains I used to have from utilizing poor techniques. Instead, I feel like I've had a great workout and my core has been so much stronger than ever before. The Spot Athletics is in no way your regular gym. If you are looking for a bunch of treadmills and stationary bikes you are not looking at the right place. If you are looking for athletic training and serious about getting into shape then this is the place for you. I'll be 100% honest you will be pushed and you will ache and be sore but the result are worth it. The staff is amazing they truly know what they are doing they will guide you the whole way through on how to properly lift and use the equipment. They stress form not only for results but for safety. Age and current fitness is no excuse I started here at 44 years old and almost 300 lbs and I see clients who are in their 60's and some as young as 8 maybe 9 years old. I have not only witnesses my own transformation but that of many others. He has been instrumental working on a program to change running form and build up core strength to prevent recurring shin splints in my high school cross country runner and also work on form changes to help my younger daughter have fun in sports. The Spot is the ONLY workout facility I've ever been motivated to wake up at 5:30a and get to class. The trainers are all 5 star. Special mention to Cory who is fantastic and really works to ensure you are getting a great workout at *your* level. I was apprehensive about joining a "weightlifting" gym, thinking it would be all male and intimidating. I assure you, it's the perfect mix of all levels. I have a love/hate relationship with the gym. My previous gym relationships would have me spending $$$, working out with trainers and never seeing the type of results I wanted. I've been a very active athlete for over 10 years now but have recently fell off. So I've been looking for a new way to motivate myself and find accountability via personal training. I have been training at The Spot Athletics for almost a year now and have been amazed at the changes in my body. I have lost 30 pounds and reduced my body fat by 12 percent while getting functionally stronger and more explosive. Strength isn't the only focus area at The Spot Athletics; they also identify areas of weakness and have you work on them in every small group session. My mobility and flexibility were very poor when I started and had a negative impact on my ability to perform certain lifts with good form. Through specific training and exercises I have improved my mobility immensely and can actually get below parallel on squats now. While the physical benefits have been amazing what I have enjoyed most about my experience at The Spot Athletics is the sense of community between the clients and the trainers. Everyone wants to see each other succeed and we all push each other to get better every session. The trainers not only push you to get one or two more repetitions, but they also want you to use proper form and technique. Prior to going to small group training I thought I knew how to do all the major lifts with good form. Once starting at The Spot Athletics I quickly found out my form was awful. Luckily for me, Bryce Calvin has been very patient and has got me headed in the right direction with my form and technique while getting stronger in a manner that reduces the chance of injury. I am so very happy I found this facility. This is not your everyday gym and that's actually what makes it unique and great. Before starting here, I did my due diligence and researched a bunch of gyms in the area to find what would be most suitable for me. I knew I wanted a place that would motivate me and push me to get fit. I did not want to settle for just any gym membership program because I wanted more than just access to a bunch of equipments. This place caught my eye because of all the positive reviews so I checked it out for myself and I am not disappointed! Firstly, it's as they say on their website. This is a training facility, they do their homework and pick exercises that will train your body to become stronger and faster. They also have different programs designed to meet your needs, if you want strength training-they have it, if you want to focus on speed and agility- they have it. If you want endurance or a combo of the above- yup...you guessed it, they have it! You can also have 1 on 1 coaching if you like or you can choose to be a part of a class. I was skeptical about the class because I was not sure if I could get a workout that would benefit me specifically. I was also not sure if this meant less attention from the coaches because of the class setting; however, this turned out not to be the case. They make sure the classes aren't over booked and the staff is unbelievably attentive, caring, understanding and very accommodating. Truly, I can go on and on about this. I have been going here for about 2 months now and I get really great workouts. I feel my body toning up really well and it gives me the type of workout I was looking for. They also have a lot of versatility, each coach has their own style which I like a lot because you can get a different coaching style and workout each time you schedule a class. This helps avoid any redundancy, even though they still do so themselves. If you are wondering what type of people go here, that all depends on what you sign up for. For example, you might see kids there because they have junior classes for kids and teens. Other classes you can expect to see an age range of 18-60 more or less. And like I said the staff is super attentive so during a class if something is too much or too little, they are very helpful in adjusting the workout to meet your needs. In terms of intensity of the classes, this will vary also. But all I know is, by the end of the class I feel I've gotten my butt kicked (in a good way). As far as the facility itself, I don't have much to complain about. They have good space and equipment, they are also expanding so there will be even more in the near future. The one thing to note is that there is no AC in the actual workout area. Yes, you heard that right. However, they do have a lot of fans and the whole back side is pretty much open so you get air flowing through the facility. At first this might seem like a negative, but you will be surprised at how little this plays a role when you start exercising. Lastly, if you are still skeptical. That's okay, you can still check it out because they have a 30 day trial for like $100. After which you can decide if you want to continue with a membership or not. Even after you begin a membership, if you decide to leave, you're not forced into a long term commitment so you can always cancel without penalty. I've been doing the metcon classes here since June 2013 ... I have never liked going to the gym because the amount of time you have to put in doing weights and then doing cardio. My husband and I were looking for something different for our daughter, who was five at the time, to do during last summer. We decided to let her try training at The Spot Athletics in their Minis program. She loved it! Not only was Coach Jess enthusiastic and encouraging, but she also made it fun while teaching proper techniques, positive sportsmanship, math facts and physical wellness--along with a great workout each time. Our daughter came home tired, which as a parent I greatly appreciated. Because our oldest daughter loved it so much, we also signed our three-year-old up for the next session. I also feel that I should add that while our daughter began training this summer, I had the opportunity to sit in the waiting room and get to know the coaches and the culture of the facility. Even though I already had a gym that I regularly visited, I was so impressed with what JL and Michelle Holdsworth (owners) had created at The Spot that I decided to give it a try. When I began training, I had suffered with back and knee pain from old injuries, and so I was to the point where I had accepted that pain was just a part of my daily life. Because of the pain, I had developed some bad workout habits--improper techniques, overcompensating, etc.--that only increased the pain. One thing that I greatly appreciate about training at The Spot is their relentless push to use correct techniques. And so immediately Laura, my coach, began teaching the correct techniques to use that are pain free. This has been a learning process, but because of JL's philosophy that he teaches to his coaches to explain, demonstrate, encourage, and coach clients through a workout, it has been great. I am now actually working out without pain. The other thing that I really appreciate about The Spot is their philosophy towards continuous improvement. It is definitely not a place where being stagnant is allowed. They push you to be the best self that you can be so that you leave feeling better than when you arrived. It's true--you do. I love the met con classes. No two classes are the same and the trainers make sure you do the exercises correctly to not injure yourself. The trainers are very good and knowledgeable.
