This library is located downtown in Bridgewater, CT. The library is beautiful, particularly in the older part of the main floor. It has lovely woodwork, a fireplace, and windows that look out onto the main street. There's also art for sale on their walls, absolutely amazing pieces I think are in pencil that make walking in a bit like going to a gallery. The librarians I encountered were friendly and interesting in hosting the public - I went for a Fika, where we had amazing snacks, coffee, and the chance to make a candle. This is truly rural Connecticut. The library is a large facility. Clean, quiet, modern. Stacks and stacks of books, quite a few places to sit and read, and several spots with comfortable tables to use as a work space. I'm sincerely impressed. My only complaint is that the parking lot is small. My Sprinter van was challenged. I don't know how people with big vehicles would do here, especially in the winter. I went to this library for a play read, and that was my first thought - my, we're parking on the side of the road. It did work out, all cars were fine, but I see why they maybe needed more space. The building is a beautiful stone though, and inside is now a book store owned by the library. They have their selections divided by topic, and are priced reasonably enough for used books. There is a fireplace on the first floor, and a restroom on a little half level going up. Overall a very pretty building.

The Oxford Public Library is absolutely delightful! First, the librarians are so welcoming to…read morevisitors. I was blown away by how excited they were to show off their library and discuss it. Secondly, it was obviously decorated with love and excitement in their job. The displays are adorable (for kids) and calming (for adults). Third, the building is new and feels spacious as you browse around or look for a place to read (including their outdoor patio). The parking lot also has plenty of room for visiting cars.

When all was said and done the purchase price was agreed at sixty-five pounds sterling. This marker tells the detailed history of New Fairfield, from that 1729 purchase, its 1740 incorporation, and through the ensuing decades of farming, industrial, power plant, residential and recreational use. This is a 2-sided marker from the CT Historical Commission in the familiar white lettering on a blue background. It has different inscriptions on each side. You'll find it on a small town green where Routes 37 and 39 cross in New Fairfield. The marker was dedicated in 1979 and overall is in very good condition with traces of minor chipping at the top of the marker sides. The full inscription reads: In the year 1724 twelve men from Fairfield, Connecticut , came to this area to purchase land from the Indians who then inhabited it. They negotiated with Chief Squantz of the Schaghticoke tribe, who lived near the pond in this town which still bears his name. Returning in the spring of 1725 with the necessary documents, they learned that Chief Squantz had died, but his four sons and heirs refused to sign any deeds. Four years later, on April 24, 1729 the Indians finally deeded the land to the white men. The purchase price was sixty-five pounds sterling. This tract of land, together with a prior grant known as "Mitchell's Purchase", became the Town of New Fairfield. The original town comprised what was commonly called the "Upper Seven Miles" - now the Town of Sherman, and the "Lower Seven Miles" - the area that forms the present Town of New Fairfield. The town was incorporated in 1740, and the twelve "Proprietors" carried on civil affairs. When the first meeting house was built in 1742 by the South Society of New Fairfield (later known as the Congregational Church) it also served as the seat of government. In 1759 the civil government was separated from the Church and a town hall was built. During the early part of the 19th century, New Fairfield, always an important farming community, also developed as a sizable industrial center. In the 1860's there were at least a dozen business and manufacturing enterprises, but by 1900 most of these firms had moved elsewhere or had been liquidated. After the creation of Candlewood Lake in the late 1920's by the Connecticut Light and Power company for hydro-electric generation, this rural town gradually became a desirable residential and resort area. I have no proof of this, but I'd like to believe it's true. The sign and rocker marker for the Pierce Academy are literally in someone's front yard, but the house is set far back from the sidewalk so if you're stopping to look, you don't have to go onto their property. The Pierce Academy was also called the "Female Academy", and subscribed to the then novel idea girls should learn the same things as boys. Believe it or not, Litchfield and the surrounding area was once a place people went to (thank you trains) so pupils came from far and wide, and got to comingle with the young men going to the first american law school down the road. Now a rock marks the place where all the learning was. If you visit this rock, please be respectful of dog walkers. Right now there are snow mounds taller then most dogs, and there's not a huge amount of room to socially distance.
