Over time, with Brightview's recommendation, my mother-in-law graduated out of Brightview to independent living--a true testament to the level of progress she made and Brightview's priority to put the resident's needs first. So, Brightview was the obvious choice when, after a long hospital stay and rehab, our family faced the challenge of arranging ongoing care for my mother, Dottie. Insurance terminated our coverage for rehab 2 weeks early with 2 days notice, which was terrifying. The sales team, led by Stacey Taylor and supported by her assistant Mark, worked genuine magic and secured us a space. We are forever grateful for their care and dedication. From the start, the Brightview team made a scary transition feel manageable. After the first evaluation period, it became clear that memory care would be necessary. The staff didn't just provide care; they created a comforting routine that helped my mother feel safe and steady every day. What stood out most was the care woven through every role: - Concierge staff who welcomed us with warmth and consistency - Activity coordinators who kept life engaging and meaningful - Day-to-day experienced and long-term hands-on caregivers who treated her with patience and kindness - The wonderful chefs who prepared meals with care and attention to nutrition - The healthcare teams led by Mary Jean McCarthy and Irene George, whose expertise and compassion were pivotal to her improvement - Above all, Kimkitta Cariah-Butler consistently demonstrated professionalism and warmth, making us feel safe and at home every step of the way. We are deeply grateful to everyone who touched my mother's life at Brightview Fallsgrove. Their teamwork and heart made a difficult time not only bearable but significantly better for her--and for us. We would wholeheartedly recommend Brightview to anyone needing quality care for a loved one. If you're evaluating options, Brightview Fallsgrove is a standout choice. Thank you to the entire Brightview Fallsgrove community for the care, patience, and unwavering support.

How this facility received a 5 rating from US News is beyond me! You walk into a very bright,…read moreupdated and modern foyer, with, depending on the receptionist, someone who is very friendly and welcoming ... and then... you turn the corner and it's a shock! The rest of the building is so old, ugly and dirty. I hadn't even been to my mother's room the 1st day and I was already cringing. My mother came to this facility from the hospital and she spent 5 1/2 wks here. Her 1st night she was placed in a room with another patient who screamed all night... and mom had a contagious illness (hence why we landed here since no other facility would accept her). The next day they moved her to a private room in the basement. They have a hall of rooms and a "socializing" area in the basement with old flooring, very old mismatched window treatments and furniture, along with the kitchen and other working departments. Obviously, it's very loud during the day. The basement felt dark, dingy, old and scary; both floors made me think of the old mental wards that were on TV shows in the 60-80s. The drop-down ceiling in mom's room was stained from leaks, the tattered parquet floor was filthy, there was a pill, syringe caps and trash on the floor when they moved her in and still 2 days later. The furniture was old and very beat up. I felt they went to the dumpster and pulled out furniture to make a room for her in the basement. The bathroom was so old I went right out and bought her shower shoes. I personally couldn't imagine showering in it. It didn't matter though, she only received 2 showers her entire 5 1/2 wks, and only after she begged for them! I gave her a shower once when she looked so bad. All of the patients have unwashed hair and look dirty (body and clothing). You can tell there is no patient care and everyone is left to fend for themselves; majority of the patients are elderly and probably not able. My mother never got her laundry washed except by me. The nursing staff was sparse, they didn't check on the patients, they didn't engage with the patients - I'm going to give them the benefit that that was only because they didn't speak or understand English. Because of the language barrier on the floor, it was very hard to find out what was going on with my mother. The PT/OT staff was very nice but every single time I walked by the room, at different times of the day, the staff were on their computers or gathered around chatting and the one or two patients were on a stationary bike. That's the "therapy" my mother received too. She did not achieve anything from PT/OT. My mother came home weaker than before her illness that sent her to the hospital initially, and now I am having to deal with it. Foolish me, I thought the purpose of rehab was to get her stronger and self sufficient again. My mother lost 15 lbs in her 5 1/2 wk stay. The food was so horrible! She had frozen fish sticks or a thin piece of tilapia several days a week with canned veggies. There were no fresh vegetables or home cooked meals like in so many other facilities. I was in her room several times when the food came and it stunk and looked so bad. She would just push it away and no one ever asked her why she wasn't eating or if they could offer her something else. They did not weigh her the entire 5 1/2 wks so they had no clue she was losing so much weight. I had to bring her food often. We spoke..tried to communicate... with the food service manager but that too went nowhere. She received one glass of water a day, no ice, and never replenished. They don't care! I left many messages with the social workers and never received a return call. I had no clue what was going on or how my mother was doing her entire stay since no one reached out to me or would return my calls. You could never get ahold of anyone. I am my mother's caregiver/POA. My mother is not 100% with it so they were told on day 1 to run everything by me. My mother did not receive the correct medication while she was there. On the 1st day I went over her medications with supposedly a nurse supervisor and crossed out a lot of old ones that the hospital had provided that wasn't up to date. This was dismissed, so mom got meds she was no longer taking or her PD meds at the wrong dose and wrong intervals. The house Drs supposedly told her she didn't need ABC, and if this is true, I feel it was not their place to make changes or comments about her medication regime since they are not her neurologist and medical Dr. It was just a total sh&tshow all the way around! I cannot recommend this facility to anyone. If you do not have a choice, like us, and this is where you have to go from the hospital, the only thing I can advise is for a family member to be a pain in their butt, show up constantly, demand responses and plan to bring food, plan to be their aid, and not expect anything from the staff. If you care about the person, this is not the place for them.

There are musical performances and other cultural and healthful activities. It's difficult for anyone to adjust to a new environment, and even more so for an elderly person with dementia. They are kind and attentive, dealing with irritability and other behaviors with grace and patience. The management is very open to communication from family members and every issue is addressed. She loves taking walks in the historic section of Kensington, right behind the building, and walking to the Saturday farmer's market. Noise from the trains passing by so closely has not been a problem at all! In fact, she really likes watching them go by. She also really likes the fact that the town of Kensington has almost all the services she needs, so she doesn't have to go far. There are a few "growing pains" being so new, still hiring staff, but they are finding great people and constantly improving. This place really doesn't feel like a senior home, which is also appealing, and residents don't feel at all micro-managed or confined. Brand new. Although my mom is in independent living, she continues to hear great things from residents about their assisted living and memory care services as well. She likes the relatively small size of the facility. They have a driver to take people to local appointments, they show movies on Friday nights, offer several art classes, and more. The food is all made-to-order in the restaurant. Service is leisurely, but very pleasant. They have an in-house hairdresser, also fitness coach. It's all about the people, and that's really made it for my mom.
