While there have been some negative reviews from the recent closure of the boys team, one person this can't be blamed on is the owner. She has allowed the men's program to run at a deficit for years, while the person responsible for the program has not taken any initiative to grow, including completely disregarding repeated requests to do so. Yes it is sad for the kids, yes it's sad for the parents, yes it is also sad for the owner and yes she has a business to run and can't keep taking losses. If you are interested in joining this gym, please know that the staff, owner and coaches who remain are fully committed to continuing to develop elite athletes and building a very strong recreational and girls program where every child will have the opportunity to be amazing!

They really care about teaching to the child the way they learn best. The small class size allows for each kid to work at his own pace. My son was very excited to be able to start some algebra in the 5th grade. They get recess at local parks and lots of interesting field trips. Even though the school is small the director always strives to have a variety of extra curricular options available. Everyone there goes the extra mile to make sure the kids are getting what they need.

Each child is treated as an individual and learning programs can be tailored to each child's needs, as the class sizes are intentionally kept small. The kids spend plenty of time outside, where they can play and discover and interact with the world around them, instead of being cooped up inside all day. The teachers make learning exciting and collaborative, focusing on each child as an individual. My older son is flourishing at Kingfisher after a very difficult experience at a Montessori school. He is advanced in some areas and lacking in others, and Debbie and the teachers at Kingfisher have been wonderful about updating us about his progress and working with him and with us to ensure that he gets everything he needs, both academically and emotionally. My younger son is more typical and fits right in as well. Both of my children are happy and excited about getting up in the morning to go to school, and are allowed to be creative and share their enthusiasm for learning. We are completely happy with Kingfisher and will keep sending our children there for as long as we can.

I say all that to say, every terrible piece of childhood lore I have has taken place at Children's Academy. The teachers at the time showed very little regard for the wellbeing of the kids. As a matter of fact (this is just one instance) a kid tried to drown me on a field trip and the teachers unanimously decided I was lying. A kid showed me his nether region--they told me I was lying. I told them they didn't give me any orange slices during snack time when everybody else had them--they said I was lying. If I ever see Ms. Kim or Ms. Tan there will be problems. I mean on the bright side, I took a picture with a pony...although that's when we found out I was allergic but whatever the pic was cute I guess.

My niece goes to this camp all summer and never gets bored. This was her second summer and she is always making sure that I have her signed up whenever there is a school break, as TSOF also does break camps during City of Decatur school breaks, teacher workdays, etc. Knowing that each day is a well thought out combination of learning and fun is what makes this camp really work. If learning is also fun-well, there you have it-the magic combination! All of the kids are excited to be there, the staff is great and very attentive. Each time I am there I am greeted kindly, as is my niece. They are actually HAPPY to see us walk in the door! The coach is so good and he really encourages my daughter. She's 5 so I don't know if she'll be good or not ... but it's definitely great to get outdoors and introduce her and I to something new. The max capacity for the class is 8 people, so you have to make your reservation early - this is easy enough to do on their website. They also offer round robin tournaments and other organized pickleball activities. My only gripe is that it's not easy to reserve a pickleball court if you just feel like playing on your own. Sometimes, when the weather is nice, we feel like going out for some impromptu pickleball and don't feel like competing. Still looking for places in DeKalb where we can easily reserve a court and do our own thing. I believe you can call to check availability and reserve, though.
