MSSA is owned and operated by Laurie Morgan. When I first stopped by to talk to her, she was very open to what we wanted to do and gave suggestions on what art projects she could do with the kids. I liked her "can do" upbeat attitude from the start. Laurie's birthday parties can go up to 15 children and we ended up with seven (including my son). She charges a mere $10 per child (you pay at least for an eight child minimum). You provide all the food and paper products. She leads the kids through the project/games/etc and does all the cleanup. Considering how much we paid for a party last year at a "bouncy house" place, this was an absolute steal. Our son's theme was Angry Birds. Laurie had the boys paint little birdhouses first, then make little puffball Angry Birds to go in them. I have to give her credit, she was incredibly patient with seven very energetic little boys. After the project/snacks/cake, she rounded them up for balloon games in the hall to work off the sugar high. They loved it, of course. Laurie will be holding summer art camps over the summer and I've already signed my son up for a week. He loved his Angry Birds party and can't wait to go back for camp. She also has art classes for adults and older kids throughout the week, and some Mommy and Me classes for the little ones.

My daughter is four and just started gymnastics. At home, she's bouncing off the walls (sometimes…read moreliterally), running around, jumping, doing somersaults all over the place so the logical thing to do was sign her up for gymnastics to have a little more structure and possibly learn some cool stuff. But my daughter is shy and 2 classes in, she hasn't done much because she's got to warm up to it and we expected this. I know that in time she will warm up and everything will be good. So why the 4 stars if my kid hasn't done much? Because they are patient with her and try to to include her and encourage her and every once in a while, they get her to do something and for that, they get nothing but my praise. As an aside, the facility is home to the Georgia Tech and Emory gymnastics teams so sometimes they are there practicing and that's kind of cool to watch.

Each child is treated as an individual and learning programs can be tailored to each child's needs, as the class sizes are intentionally kept small. The kids spend plenty of time outside, where they can play and discover and interact with the world around them, instead of being cooped up inside all day. The teachers make learning exciting and collaborative, focusing on each child as an individual. My older son is flourishing at Kingfisher after a very difficult experience at a Montessori school. He is advanced in some areas and lacking in others, and Debbie and the teachers at Kingfisher have been wonderful about updating us about his progress and working with him and with us to ensure that he gets everything he needs, both academically and emotionally. My younger son is more typical and fits right in as well. Both of my children are happy and excited about getting up in the morning to go to school, and are allowed to be creative and share their enthusiasm for learning. We are completely happy with Kingfisher and will keep sending our children there for as long as we can.

I say all that to say, every terrible piece of childhood lore I have has taken place at Children's Academy. The teachers at the time showed very little regard for the wellbeing of the kids. As a matter of fact (this is just one instance) a kid tried to drown me on a field trip and the teachers unanimously decided I was lying. A kid showed me his nether region--they told me I was lying. I told them they didn't give me any orange slices during snack time when everybody else had them--they said I was lying. If I ever see Ms. Kim or Ms. Tan there will be problems. I mean on the bright side, I took a picture with a pony...although that's when we found out I was allergic but whatever the pic was cute I guess.
