Go to the counter, let me get a foot long chilli dog n root beer to go please. Chilli tasted like someone took a can of beans n smooshed them then just put it on the bun. Yuck. No flavor, just beans. Thank goodness I cut the dog in half anticipating I wouldnt eat the other half anytime soon. So I scoop the nasty chilli off the other half n low n behold I see a hot dog the width of my index finger. No wonder folks can eat a foot long. Not a quality dog in my opinion and waste of bread because there is no dog in half of it lol. I really dislike when folks try to make up for lack of meat with toppings. Went here for lunch with a friend around 12:30. The place was packed with only about 18 seats at the counter & people were standing waiting to place orders to go or just waiting for seats to open up. My friend ordered the pulled pork sandwich while I ordered the $6 Timmy dog which is a footlong Coney with the works including sauerkraut. The hot dog turned to mush when I cut it with the plastic knife provided-not good. It didn't taste good either. I'll stick with Nathan's-thank you. My friend said her pulled pork was average. We tried the root beer & it was good-very sweet. I was disappointed there was no diet root beer like at A&W. Finally got to this iconic northern Cincy destination! Had a foot long chili cheese dog, some root beer (of course), and a root beer float! It was exactly the quintessential American junk food lunch I was hoping for. The stand itself is very small, and it was packed. They have one long counter with stools. The atmosphere was definitely a no frills historic "food stand" my daughter had a root beer float and she loved it. Food and service was great. Good place for a summer visit. Had an altercation with the rental car company next door that made the experience negative. There is not enough parking at the root beer stand and no sign that I saw suggesting an alternate parking solution. Myself and two other families (not with our party) parked at the rental car lot next door. This lot had ample free parking and was a mere 6-10 feet of grass from the Root Beer Stand. While we were eating, the rental company parked two cars behind the three of our vehicles, blocking us in without a conversation, without asking us to move our cars. There is NO SIGN on the spots suggesting we would be towed if parked there. Ultimately, we were able to maneuver our cars through the grass and exit around the parked rental cars, escaping the tow truck that had supposedly been called. Here's my beef: sounds like the root beer stand does not have a good relationship with this rental car company. The rental company must be fed up with this. They need to protect their customers with signage and/or an additional parking alternative. I won't be in a hurry to eat here again. All the hustle and bustle was overwhelming for my kiddos. read more

If you live in Cincinnati, you have to check out the Root Beer Stand. The reason I went was because my parents grew up at this restaurant, and it held so many memories for them. Think of it like a small version of Sonic restaurant, where you can drive your car right up to the restaurant-almost like a drive in. I do not believe they come out to your car to take your order like they do at Sonic (I was there on a super busy Sunday afternoon!)--but you could definitely sit in your car to eat after getting your food. This restaurant is very small, but it does offer limited seating around the kitchen where you place your order (probably less than 20 seats). Pretty much everything on the menu is less than five dollars. I am giving this restaurant only three stars just because I thought the quality of food was equivalent to less than a fast food restaurant. I felt like a Wendy's or McDonald's burger tasted better and were about the same price. However, this is a great restaurant to visit during the summer, as it has a nice playground in the back of the restaurant for the kids to play on. All I can say for sure, is that I have never enjoyed a dog and a 'beer" anywhere else I have stopped, as much as I do here! The Root Beer Stand opened as an A & W Root Beer Stand in 1957. At that time, Sharonville was a small railroad town. The Stand stood on what were then, the outskirts of town on Rt. # 25 (Cincinnati-Dayton Road). That was the main road from Michigan to Florida. In those days, before interstate highways crisscrossed America, a large number of daytime customers were travelers or truck drivers. Many of The Stand's visitors lived nearby. Back then, the vast majority of homes and cars weren't air-conditioned. So, it was a great treat for the family to hop in the car and head out for an ice cold mug of root beer. And the root beer has to be tried to be believed! The property boasts a well that's 280 feet deep. Water from this well contributes to the distinctive flavor of The Stand's made from scratch root beer and makes it taste so good. Except for the addition of exterior siding a few years ago, The Stand looks pretty much the same as it did in 1957. The building was set up so customers were either waited on by carhops or walked up to two screened windows for carryout service. In 1957, all the food and drinks were prepared where the today's waitresses stand and take orders. Today's kitchen was the storage area back then. With the growth of the business and bringing the carhops inside as counter help, more space was needed. Changes were made and completed by the 1973 season. The Rootbeer Stand is one of my absolute favorite local spots. The rootbeer is smooth and creamy with little carbonation so you don't feel gross after a few mugs. My favorite menu item is the footlong chili dog. The chili isn't spicy or the same texture as Cincy chili, which isn't bad, this is just different! The indoor space is extremely cramped but it's part of the aesthetic, one that's fun when it's not super busy and one that is a stressful headache when it is. If you can work your way to the bar to order there's tons of outdoor space with picnic tables and a park for kids. They also have a popcorn machine, it's fun and delicious but extremely salty. Up until really recently this was cash only which was frustrating if you forgot and were already there, but the addition of the card reader will make this place even more popular! The food and drink is delicious (know what to expect though it's definitely not gourmet.) but the aesthetic makes the experience complete. It looks like an old drive up, the inside is a cramped 70's style bar with old hats, team photos, bar stools, hand painted signs and a popcorn machine. It's really cute and comfortable. The outside space is really nice to bring kids or groups. Overall I can see how the food isn't for everyone (not vegetarian friendly) But I think it's exactly what you want out of a local spot. The only down side is the crazy crowds and how hard it is to make your way to order if it's a busy time. But due to the simplicity of the food it comes out super fast, there's fast turn over at the bar and you never wait long for food or drink. read more

I won't explain the labyrinthine route I took to find this out-of-the-way gem (let's just say I wrote down directions from I-75, but drove up I-71 instead), I'll just say that it was well worth the journey. You wouldn't expect to find this seasonal spot in such an industrial locale, but then again it much more fitting among warehouses and garages than in an impersonal strip mall. After one sip of my creamy root beer float, I transported to my childhood when my grandma would make me Brown Cows and root beer floats. She'd reminisce about soda jerks and ice cream stands as if they were historical artifacts. And they would be if rarities like The Root Beer Stand weren't around. The bite of the root beer melded perfectly with the rich creaminess of the vanilla ice cream. No wonder this place gets so many raves. The only reason I deducted a star is because this place is so popular that we were unable to eat there for lunch on my boyfriends lunch break. We came back around 3 pm and didn't have to wait more than 10 minutes before we were back in the car savoring our delights.
