I had been meaning to visit the Lowry River Bar and Reastaurant for a very long time, but there were several reasons why I had never quite made it:
1. I could never quite fathom its location (despite its protestations of being in Manchester, I think Salford would be a better description; also worth mentioning to taxi drivers is that it is nowhere near the Lowry theatre/gallery complex).
2. It has a very very expensive a la carte menu.
3. I had read a rather unsavoury review by Jay Rayner that put me off.
However, with the advent of January offers sprouting up all over the city, I noticed a pretty good one at the Lowry and decided that there was no time like the present to take them up on it. Called the '777' menu, it offers 3 courses at £7 each, and if everyone on your table orders three courses, you can have a bottle of wine at £7 too. So, I guess as you read this, you have to bear in mind that I can only really judge them by this offer, and not by the standard of their usual a la carte fare, which may be far superior, but is also far far more expensive.
So, waffling aside, I would first like to state how absolutely delightful all of the staff were. Friendly, helpful, not too overbearing - generally just very very good at their jobs, I thought. We had a lovely welcome to the bar, where we enjoyed some very delicious cocktails (£8.50). The cocktail menu was well designed and pretty inventive - not just your average run of the mill drinks.
The whole place was pretty swanky and fairly formal. When we were led through to the restaurant we were surprised to find that it was pretty empty, so unfortunately it lacked a bit of atmosphere. As in the bar, the waiting staff were excellent.
The food, I would say, was good, but not fantastic. The portions were well sized and tasty, the flavour combinations were well thought out, but generally, it lacked a bit of oomph. Plus, my bread and butter pudding had NO FRUIT in it!! I'm not sure that's even legal!!
I've had similar 'offer' menus at other restaurants and found the food to be equal quality to the a la carte menu, but here, I would hope that there is a difference, as the price you pay for the latter is pretty high.
All in all, it was a fun night. As the place has an atmosphere of 'swank' and there are a few celebrities about (although I'm not sure Hollyoaks cast members really count), we spent the evening giggling like naughty schoolchildren who had sneaked in through the back door. That, combined with cocktails and wine, made for a decent Friday night out. read more
