We were anticipating finally eating at the River, and it ended up being a major fail. I ordered the philly cheesesteak sandwich with fries, and my husband ordered a cheeseburger with fries. For an appetizer we ordered the loaded potato skins. While I'd like to say something good about the food, I can't. It was unbelievably bland, except for my fries, which were too salty, and the au jus for the philly was way too salty too. The loaded potato skins were the worst I've ever had. Again, bland...absolutely no flavor. The only positive thing I can say is our waitress was cheerful and attentive. Save your money on this overpriced swill, and go elsewhere. Never again! read more

Well they are back open after the fire and talking to locals bigger and better. Good variety and specials. I had their ribeye (of course) and it was good. They use a little too much seasoning for my taste, but it's course enough you can scrape it off. The couple next tome ordered their "Pig Burger" and it looked delicious. This restaurant is a shining example of what good food can be day in day out. The head chefs are ACF certified, and passionate about what they do. They are truly my brothers from another mother. The food is excellent, the setting is perfect, and they exercise the restraint of a true Chef, that allows the flavors of the food to be the stars of the show. Outstanding! Like the atmosphere, everyone was nice. No one asked me how my meal was, if they had I would have told them the following: Firecracker Shrimp was a little oily but they were huge. Get past the oily part and the shrimp was great. The 3 piece catfish was so so, the fish meat was more gray than white, I would steer clear of the catfish next time. The French fries were crunchy and extremely salty. I am not ready to count the out yet. I will return for dinner and give them another shot but this time they get 2 stars!! Also let me add that the tip percentage calculator starts at 20% and goes up to 30%. I would expect that at Sonny Williams or Arthur's but not at a place in Batesville, Ar. The remodeled and revamped Josie's (after the fire that gutted the original a couple of years ago) is such an improvement. It is open, airy, filled with sunlight during the day, with much greater views of the river. There are private rooms/bar for events downstairs and a "chef's table" style bar where diners can sit and watch the goings on in the open kitchen if they choose to. The menu is basic steakhouse/American with a twist. Chef Marco Trimarchi (from Piero's in Jonesboro for those of you who know Jonesboro's restaurant history) has taken the reins and offers daily specials that vary from haute cuisine to global ethnic. Service is generally good and consistent. We enjoy stopping here any time we are in town or driving through. read more

Evidently this place has changed owners; the name on the receipt is ' The River Waterfront Steak and Grill'. Anyway, my wife, grandson and I ate there tonight. I had the hamburger steak, wife had chicken quesadillas and grandson had a cheeseburger & fries. Food was good, with cheeseburger cooked medium well; that was stated on the menu, so act accordingly. Prices were reasonable. Our bill was $53.50, including a generous tip. They did bill $6.00 for a side order of Guacamole, which I felt was a bit much. The hamburger steak was good, but wish I'd tried something else. Service was excellent. All three of us agreed we'd eat there again. read more

There were four of us who went for my mother's birthday. Our server, Alyssa, was very attentive, and that's about as positive as I can be about our dinner. We ordered two appetizers - fried mushrooms and spinach dip and they were good. Then we ordered four entrees: Rib-Eye Steak, ordered medium rare, was a 1/4 inch thick at best and extremely overcooked. Crab Cakes - lots of bread crumbs, but no signs of crab. Steak Stuffed Portabella Mushroom was sloughed in cheese. And probably the worst was the Chicken Parmigiana - the chicken was completely burned on the bottom and the pasta was so overcooked, it was mushy and fell apart. While we stayed for awhile and enjoyed our conversation, it was hard to overlook all of the dishes that were never cleared from our table, including the appetizer dishes. In fact, they were all still there after the check came and the bill was paid. Very, very disappointing dinner. read more

Not being one whos a big meat eater your first thought upon reading this is surly "well why are you dining at a steakhouse" well first off in the state of Arkansas it wouldn't matter where you go to eat, if it does it have four legs they're not interested. Low and behold they listed "sushi quality Ahi" on their menu served seared for $22 and when served, if it were more than three ounces I would be surprised and as accompaniment I orderd green beans, hush puppies and a salad but before ordering I ask what type of lettuce do you put in your salad answer "mixed greens and a little iceberg" well the salad came out in a tiny little condiment dish with very very little mixed greens (a couple of leafs) 0of spinach, at which I ask the server if I were being charged extra for the salad and her reply was "no" wrong, when I got the bill it was an additional to the $22. The crusted side of the Ahi was so salty that you couldn't even taste the fish causing me to cut same away before taking a bite and thereby reducing the three ounces down to say 2.5. Bottom line, I left there hungry and went to McDonald's for meat anyway and a milk to fill the void in my empty stomach. Don't waste your money eating at this restaurant. read more

We went to eat here to celebrate our daughters birthday tonight. The food and service was good but after dinner I walked downstairs and out on the deck to look at the water as we always do. As soon as I got outside a woman walked up behind me, looked out at me, and locked me outside. I tried to open all of the doors and knocked on the doors but she just would look at me and turn back around. Our daughters started to come down to let me in and the woman yelled at them to get back upstairs. I finally decided that I would have to walk all the way around the building and come back in the front again to get back to my family. So I went back down to find out why she did that to me, she got an attitude with me and yelled that downstairs was closed and that I took it upon myself to go down there. I asked her where was the sign or ANY indication that it was closed and she chewed me out and said I should have asked at the front when I first came in the restaurant if I could go downstairs! When I went to the front to complain I was told by some of the employees that that the woman that locked me out was the new owner and that was how she normally treated the customers. Tonight we had just spent $150 dollars on our meal as we frequently do. My family has been enjoying dining at Josie's and best dam steakhouse for years and spend a lot of money there. I never leave these reviews but we are business owners also and we would never think of talking to our customers that way or locking them out of the Buiding. Because of this I would not recommend this restaurant and my family will be spending our money elsewhere from now on. read more

I hate to slam a restaurant because I know how important these reviews can be, but my experience at Best Dam Steakhouse was so bad that someone needs to take note. Our group of 7 arrived around 12:30 today. There were other people there, but it wasn't crowded. We were seated at a big table overlooking the river, so our seating was great. Our waitress was friendly and helpful; one of our party asked if it was possible to order the loaded baked potato, which wasn't on the menu, and she checked with the kitchen who agreed to make it. Three of the rest of us ordered the breakfast platter while the others ordered hamburger steak or an omelet. So all was well while we waited for our food. And waited. And waited. And waited. More than an hour. We didn't see our waitress for the last 15-20 minutes of our wait, because we wanted to ask her to check on our food. When the food came out, it was obvious it had been sitting a long while. My scrambled eggs were room temperature, and a skin had formed over the top. The bacon was nearly black. The waffles were so hard on the outside that I had to use force to cut them with my steak knife, and they were chewy in the way of bread that had been microwaved too long. All of the dishes appeared to be in the same condition, but I didn't ask the others because we were their guests and I was reluctant to appear to be complaining (besides which it was my fault that we were eating there; they had offered Colton's or this and I chose this). My husband experienced the same bad quality as I, with the addition of room temp gravy which had skinned over. No one complimented the food as we quickly downed it (because we were really hungry since it was now around 1:45) and left. I'm really disappointed with this meal, and although I've had good meals here before, things may have gone downhill. The new owner may need to shake things up. read more

Went to the new place Friday night. Seemed more like a cafeteria style atmosphere. Very loud!!! We had Ribeyes full of fat and gristle. Extremely small salad, glass of tea. I guess I'll give it one star for the view and environment (given its in Batesville). Save your money and go to Coltons unless you enjoy severely over seasoned steak and poor cuts of meat. Their website states "award winning steaks" but I guess I should've asked what contest in hell they entered. I thought the prices were great, but it all made sense once we got our steaks. The filet was the thinnest cut I've ever seen and the ribeye looked like something off of a buffet line. Like garlic salt? Well their chef sure does! The seasoning was so strong that I had to wash each bite down with a beer. The BBQ nachos were ok but that should not have been the high point of my experience at a "steakhouse". Hopefully the locals tastebuds are not as refined as this city boy or they won't last long. read more

We are in town for a funeral and needed a late meal. We ran across Josie's Steakhouse about 45 minutes before they closed. We had a party of nine. I had the chef salad. It was huge and had more bacon, ham and eggs than lettuce and it had plenty if lettuce. Really tasty. My husband ordered the ribeye, medium rare (but we really like rare). It was tasty and rare. (Not a problem for us, but maybe for those who like their meat more cooked) My brother-in-law had the catfish, he said repeatedly how good it was. My kids had burgers and they were thick and juicy, if a tad salty. The French fries were super crunchy on the outside and fluffy inside (a really good frozen fry). The food was really good, but not great. The big reason I bumped from 3 stars to 4 was because of the great service. We were a late, large party. We were never rushed. No one stared at us until we left. Our server took great care of us until 30 minutes after closing and acted like we were start of day customers. I really appreciated that. Solid food, very good service...and a beautiful view if you're earlier than we were :-) read more

Josie's Lockhouse is probably Batesville's single best restaurant hands down with a large variety, excellent preparation, and a wonderful and unique location. They are in the old lockhouse where the lockman and his family once lived who worked the lock-and-dam overlooking the White River from the north side looking down on the beach and Riverfront Park. You can sit inside or outside on their wrap-around balcony above the river. The place is still filled with old relics from the lockhouse including the giant brass water-pressure and depth gauges and photos of the old days when the lockhouse was still functioning. They have taken out walls and added wrap-around balcony's on the river side to create a unique dining experience. They are mainly a restaurant but do have a small bar at one end. I don't drink but have friends who do and know it's one of the few places you can order alcohol with your meal in our dry county and from what I understand their selection is decent. As for the food, excellent and with only a very rare exception is always prepared perfectly. In nine years averaging a couple of times a month I think we have only had to send something back twice. Both times being steaks that were supposed to be medium, once being a little underdone and once a little over, that's not a bad average at all for how often we go. They carry everything from Steaks, Seafood and fresh Fish, BBQ including full racks of ribs, and many unique items and variants on almost all of their dishes. They also have smaller items such as burgers and kids stuff. The portions are usually large so be aware of that. The prices are a little high for Batesville but not terribly out of sync with what you would expect to pay in a larger city for such a place and such excellent food with great proportions. Many of the appetizers are a bit pricey but are also large enough in themselves to make a meal out of for many people and covers the gambit from a humongous bowl of cheese dip and chips (they should really offer a half order size) to something as fancy as a giant steak stuffed mushroom that's pricey but a meal in itself for one person though my wife and I usually split one or order one already in a to-go box and take it home for the next days lunch. My wife enjoys that they always have lots of dishes made up of fresh greens usually prepared as unique as their meat/seafood dishes. They routinely have daily specials, often a selection of unique items that their own chefs came up with having as few as four items on a weekday to as many as ten on a weekend. My only complaint is that I don't drink alcohol and usually prefer Coke with my meal and they don't carry Coke products, just Pepsi stuff. If you really want they can bring you Coke in a can with a glass of ice from behind the bar (I think they keep them to make mixed drinks) and used to give free refills on those but recently started charging for each one if you do that (the Pepsi products are still free refills). Most people I know seem to prefer Coke products over Pepsi products so this seems odd for such a large, nice restaurant not to offer both. They also sometimes host special events at Josie's and are available for special occasions as well. They have a stage and on some weekends they have a live band and on one night of the week during certain hours have a Karaoke night. On some weekends during the days they have a large screen that drops down in front of the stage and have a party to show the season finales of major sporting events such as the Kentucky Derby, NASCAR finals, Superbowl, Razorbacks playing, etc. If your not a fan of loud crowds you probably wont want to go during one of those events, though they are of course fairly spaced out and often during the afternoon on weekends so not usually an issue for the evening diner. Josie's is also one of Batesville's latest-open restaurants with the last customers allowed in until 10 on weeknights and 11 on Friday and Saturdays. This being in a town where most sit-down restaurants close at 9 no matter what day of the week it is with only one or two exceptions that go until 10 on weekends, I think Josie's is the only place that stays open until 11 on the weekend. read more

Can enjoy an alcoholic drink with your meal which is rare in the Batesville area. Live music was a good guitarist--sufficiently soft so the conversation was not overwhelmed. Waitress was responsive and attentive but not intrusive. Overall definitely a four star. Would be a fiver except for the shrimp. read more

Where do I start? When we were seated, my husband and I were given 2 different menus, with 2 different prices. When we asked the server to order from the lower priced menu, he spoke to a large dark haired and bearded man in the kitchen that said no. The prices were about $5 difference. We hadnt had a good steak in a while, so we stayed. The salads came. Some iceberg with a few spinach leaves, 2 small tomatoes and a little plastic cup of dressing. We had to ask for silverware, which was spotted and dirty looking. I ordered a filet blue rare with a side of mushrooms and a gorgonzola crust. My husband asked for a baked potato loaded. I asked for the potato and said I didnt want bacon. I asked what else was on it. He said cheese. I asked if it had butter and sour cream. He said yes. The meals were served; the potatoes were wrapped in foil, with plastic packages of sour cream and butter for me to apply. The cheese and chives(which were never mentioned) were in a plastic cup. There were no mushrooms or gorgonzola crust. I asked the server again who brought be a plastic dish of mushrooms and another of gorgonzola. So much for my crust. My steak was OK. No where near the $36 I paid for it. My husband's rib eye was undercooked, and tough. I will not be back, nor would I recommend this restaurant. My steak was worth about $20. read more
