Duncaster Continuing Care Retirement Community has always been a top notch Graduated Living…read moreCommunity since its founding in 1984. Recognized and awarded throughout their 34+ years. This Community has recently provided us with two special and personal experiences. First, my mother-in-law enjoyed and when I say enjoyed, this is very understated, a recovery period in their on-site Caleb Hitchcock Health Center. This was followed by a bad fall in her own home, which required surgery and two+ months of ambulatory therapy. Second, our daughter was offered and accepted a position with the Community. I was able to spend two and half hours one evening during an earlier snow fall to "safely Uber" my daughter home after her shift. While there I was able to stroll and observe the Community first hand. In that time, I chatted with the most wonderful residents, diverse, each within their own level of life and ability. However ALL appeared happy and with a most impressive sense of close community and caring for one and other. My favorite component is the Aquatic Center. Top notch with scheduled low impact exercise classes, monitored open swim lanes, and a gradual ramp for aided aqua therapy. Not to put aside their adjacent Health and Wellness Center with fitness and movement classes for all. The dining facilities are NOT run of the mill either. Ranging for Casual formal dining, private spaces for residents to dine with visitors, and even door service. The menu was quite impressive offering a new menu everyday catering to all dietary needs and wellness, too. Now, entertainment. I happened upon an open auditorium with a large number of residents enjoying a live Piano, Violin, and Cello performance. I stood in the doorway mesmerized leaving the snowstorm behind. From there I wondered into their Library with an ample and diverse section of book stacks, warm well lit seating areas, and during the day a Librarian. In warmer, months the grounds are park like, the landscaping is beautiful and offers a number of pathways with spaces sit, enjoy nature, and let a little Vitamin D seep in. I'm only scratching the surface and I could go on, however, I close with this: I hope to be as fortunate one day as the Duncaster Residents to partake in such a well planned, maintained, and caring Community to help extend the enjoyment of our sunset.

The…read moredoctors and attending nurses have given very good care so far to my mother-in-law who is in her 90s and starting to gradually decline. An added reassurance is that they are accredited through the state and have received various awards. Duncaster has been in business for about 35 years and they've certainly earned their great reputation in the community. This is a facility I would highly recommend for anyone seeking to place their elder family into quality care with excellent healthcare professionals.

Firstly, the salesperson said they have a calendar filled every day with activities so that the…read morememory care (Harbor) patients would always have something to do to keep their mind at work. I saw this calendar just outside the entrance to the Harbor area, and it looked great. Well, every single day I went to visit my mother there wasn't ever ANYTHING going on. Everyone was just sitting on the recliners asleep. I never witnessed a single activity. I had a private aid with my mom every day all day as well, and she told us there wasn't anything going on during the day. Secondly, while my mother was in the facility I had to reach out to a few people in upper management, Peg Sullivan and Jenn Brin, to get some basic questions answered. The emails or voicemails I left were rarely responded to. I'd have to get in my car and drive down there to get any communication across. This was very annoying. Thirdly, I reached out to get a couple simple things addressed in my mom's room. There was a ton of dirty dust on the outside of the AC vent register on the ceiling. I wanted it cleaned off. You guessed it, nobody responded. When taking the tour of the facility, I noticed a lot of base trim work was removed in the large community area where the sofas and TVs are. I asked the salesperson about that. She said they were doing some renovating and painting. A month later and the base trim was still not reinstalled. If I had to guess, I'm sure it's still not reinstalled at this very moment. My mom's house was very neat, and in perfect repair, so these 2 minor things were important for me to get addressed. Finally, when all was said and done and my mom was no longer living here, they owed me some money. I went back and forth several times asking when I'd get it. It took them over a month to get me the money they owed me. That was a bit insulting. For the amount of money you pay to live there, they really should have MUCH better service. Some words of advice - stay away. If you absolutely have to move a loved one here, get them their own private aid and make sure they have a lot of visitors.

While she lived in…read morean assisted living facility, my family felt she needed more one-on-one attention to ensure her safety. I reached out to Anna at Nutmeg Home Assistance ahead of her return home to plan mom's support. Anna quickly coordinated 24 hr care. Her incredibly compassionate, patient, and knowledgeable team of aides took copious notes about mom's needs. Anna communicated care updates to me and after a few weeks we were able to adjust mom's care to 15 hrs/day. While caring for my mom, my dad suddenly became physically needier. Once again Anna made adjustments to her staffing schedule to accommodate care for both my mom and dad. When dad entered Hospice care, Anna pivoted again and her team tenderly ensured his passing was peaceful. I can not say enough about the responsiveness, expertise, dedication, and flexibility of Anna and her Nutmeg team. They supported mom, and then both my parents, for over 9 months. Nutmeg saved my parents, extending my dad's life and allowing him to spend his final months with his wife (versus in a skilled nursing facility). Nutmeg is staffed with angels and I'm deeply grateful for the professionalism, grace, and attention they gave my parents when they needed it most. Also worth mentioning is that Dad's Hospice care givers raved about the care Nutmeg offered my dad. I highly recommend Anna and Nutmeg Home Assistance.

It's been since March since anyone has been allowed to come out. This is house arrest and these people have not had anything to do or anyone to talk to. Their rooms are not that big either. The facility has 2 entrances and only one is open most of the time. It is on New Britain Ave and it has 4 lanes of traffic. It is almost impossible for anyone trying to take a left. I am waiting for the day when someone gets killed trying to do this, especially the seniors who still drive. It was an idiotic decision to close the entrance on Newington Ave where there are fewer cars going up and down the road. Some of the security guards have a reputation of being very rude. Parking at the facility is a total nightmare because there is very little of it. If you do find a spot you have to walk very far to get into the building. Don't think that the administrator there will care a lot about your opinion or your problems with this facility or with the staff. The rent there is very expensive and I would suggest to look elsewhere. There are a lot of empty rooms there and now you know why.
