The strange addition of a display case in the corner filled with china plates and jugs next to an old fashioned stove only adds to the sensation that the bar was converted from Ma O'reilly's home. However there is not just a strong Oirish contingent who come here as I have often noticed a good Polish representation here which adds to the lively mix of nations who like a drink! Situated near plenty of Liverpool's clubs this place makes for an unconventional start to a good night out.

Named after the shipping company that pushed the Titanic out to sea and left it to fend for itself against the big, nasty iceberg, the White Star pub was also a favourite of the omnipresent Beatles, who were apparently shunned from the nearby Grapes for being too scruffy. The back room was where they would receive post-gig wages from then-manager Allan Williams, who would later find infamy as the man who gave them away. There's a booth with brass plaques and photographs, but thankfully that's about it. It's refreshing not having it crammed down your throat like every other bloody place in the surrounding area. Owing to the herds of post-war prostitutes that swarmed the city, the White Star pub didn't get ladies toilets until 1987. Don't worry though women (I know they hang on my every word), the place has facilities for you now. You just have to climb stairs to get to them. Blame the hookers for that one.

The staff and customers are welcoming and friendly. They re happy to leave you to your own devices or put the world to rights with you if you so desire. The pub is full of characters from cheeky student types, to pensioners without whom the pub might actually fall down. The bar has won many awards from CAMRA - the campaign for real ale. There is a large range of real ales, mostly from the local brewery Cains. The ales are changed often but a couple of old favourites such as Wobbly Bob have been there for years. There is also a huge range of spirits, bottled beers, continental beers, alcopops, wine and ciders available. There are 3 floors in the Swan inn. The ground floor is the most spacious and has a large bar with bar stools, and stools, pews and tables. Upstairs is smaller but a bit brighter. There is also a mezzanine level which is the newest floor. This is a good space to grab early on in the night if you are expecting a large group of people. The jukebox on the ground floor has long been known to be the best in Liverpool. Upstairs is a video jukebox which is updated regularly. During the day time there is a small selection of food available which is inexpensive and very tasty. I love this pub, I would recommend it to anyone. I particularly like quiz night which is every Thursday. I would class the Swan Inn as a Rock pub but it welcomes everyone.

I used to come here regularly on a Sunday night because some friends loved the karaoke here - and judging from the crowds so do a lot of scousers. Of course being so close to the strippers, The Croc can also attract an unsavoury element through its doors but really its part of what adds to the charm and grittiness of this place like similar old school pubs in this part of the city centre. Across its small patio, with TV so smokers don't have to miss out on any important match action , is the Baby Croc which has its own, slightly more laid back feel. It's still an old fellas boozer but being tucked away in a backstreet amongst the offices of the city centre, The Croc has the sensation of being a hidden drinking den, good for those spontaneous all day sessions.

You're either left sat directly on the pavement getting in the way of pedestrians or you're shoved into some dingy little backyard getting in the way of delivery men. The Crocodile gets it right. Here you can sit in the passageway separating one side from the other, looking out through the ornate gates at the street beyond and not have to worry that any second a lorry rattling with kegs is going to start reversing into you. Inside, the pub is filled with friendly chaps and chapesses getting their karaoke on. This is normally the kind of thing that winds me up, but the fact I can escape back outside improves it endlessly.
