On the last…read morevisit I had the mixed roast consisting of beef, lamb and pork, veggies, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puds and cauliflower cheese. All of that for £16 (I think) and it is seriously tasty. The service from the wait staff can be a little slow once you're sat down but the food comes quickly and hot. I always recommend the Lord Northbrook and I've taken visiting friends here for dinner. A beautifully refurbed old boozer now a Gastro pub. Doesn't really get much better. I only give it 4 stars though as the menu selection can be a little limited if you have a picky rate in your midst and they're not the cheapest of venues either. Don't let that put you off though.

We had a really mixed experience, staying here (and note that most of the reviews are for the pub…read moreand its food - this one is about the accommodation). So I'm going to list the good and bad, and let you decide. It is an historic, 16th century Inn, in a beautiful old half-timbered building, right in the centre of the village. It has original fireplaces, and downstairs there is a large bar area, a smaller cosy lounge area by the fireplace, and a further lounge-restaurant. At the rear is an uncompromisingly modern restaurant extension, with glass walls, with a terrace, overlooking the pub garden and with good views over the surrounding countryside. (most people seemed to eat here.) There are four bedrooms, all with four-poster beds. In terms of our accommodation experience, the good things (aside from the atmosphere and location, were): - plenty of parking at the rear (accessed through an arch at the side); - a comfortable four poster bed; - nice selection of tea and coffee, coffee making machine; - staff friendly and helpful once we had checked in; - very good wifi; - the breakfast was very good indeed (but see below on timings). Less good: - check-in wasn't great - a couple of members of staff saw us arrive, but carried on doing what they were doing, and left us standing there. It takes no effort to say, "can I help you?". - the main problem was that breakfast is only served from 9-11. We needed to leave at 9am on our first day to visit a nearby attraction on a timed ticket at 10am. This meant we had to do without the cooked breakfast which is included in the B&B price. 9am seems really late to start breakfast, even on a weekend (and the 11am finish is odd, given check out is 11am). - being an old building, the sound proofing is almost non-existent. We expected some noise from the bar and the street during the evening, but we also had somebody walking around the apartment above our room until 3:30 am in the morning. (This is staff accommodation.) Every footstep creaked a floorboard, and was noisy enough to wake us up. - the weather had turned cold but the central heating was not turned on, so the bathroom (and towel rail) were always cold. There was a fan heater, which we managed to work out (despite having no instructions), but it obviously did not warm the bathroom. (The old windows are of course single glazed - but all the more important to make the rooms comfortable.) - the shower had a panel of the screen missing, and the shower water pressure was poor. - there was some hair on the carpet by the bathroom. So, overall, we had a disappointing stay. We very much got the impression that the focus of the establishment is as a pub and, particularly, its restaurant. This was particularly evident regarding the late breakfast timings, which seem to cater primarily for non-resident visitors. The four rooms seemed very much an afterthought. That being the case, I do wonder whether they should simply focus on the pub and the restaurant (which is clearly extremely popular).

Thinking about it, it must be the best & most comprehensive I've ever seen. Excellent choice & often using local produce. There's a posh boarding school over the road which gives a pleasingly regular supply of barmaids and glamorous creatures languishing in the aforementioned beer garden, prior to going to greater things elsewhere no doubt.

That's because, away from the very pleasing Otter Ale, they serve some pretty great looking food. On the boards, I saw pig's head, which according to my chum who had just eaten it, was amazing. Alas, I can't personally vouch for it as I was only drinking and staring at the various mounted animal heads on the wall (great boar's head folks). The vibe inside is all wooden and dimly lit, which personally, I think makes for a perfect drinking den. If you're a stalker of some kind, it might be worth putting this place on your stalker map (stalkers, I assume, have special maps with pins in and the like). Known drinkers here include the not-so-impressive Adrian Chiles and the properly famous Hugh Grant, who I'm told is a fan of Twiglets. There's a small smoking section with seat which is pretty cool and an especially rude cat called Lily who I found rather endearing in its aloofness. Basically, this is a bit of jewel of a pub, although, some of the prices for beer can be a little off-putting. Definitely worth a trip though.

An awful pub which could and should be so much more…read more Gone are the days, it would seem, when Sevenoaks was an idyllic countryside town. Now slave to the ever growing commuter belt the Chequers Inn would seem to be yet another victim to the fatigue of the chain pub. I am very biased in my review but only because I had one of the most singely bad experiences ever in this very pub. My girlfriend and I partook in a meal after a day walking through the scenic Knowle Park. It's a nice walk that I've been doing since I was a boy and a place to which I still like to return. The meal was awful. One of the abysmal plates was a terrible tuna steak, undercooked and comlpete with a giant piece of scale hanging from its side. Under time constraints we decided to make do and quickly worked through the meal chalking it up to bad experience not counting on the food poisoning it would evidentally later evoke. This was however not the crowning glory of our sour experience. I was standing to leave (and I may be tall before you read on but I certainly do not touch the ceiling) the next thing I know I'm covered in white dust and my hand is bleeding. Part of the ceiling had literally fallen, bounced off my shoulder (luckily I was standing lest it would've clouted me directly on the head) and clipped my hand on the way down. Minimal care from the staff was taken to make sure either of us was fine. At this point I was quite bewildered still not quite sure why my hair was covered in plaster and why my hand was cut. Other people around us seemed more clued on and were demanding free drinks and such the like for us. Just wanting to get out of there we promptly left and latterly I wrote a letter of complaint My meal was refunded and a free meal was also offeredwhich I think understandably I chose not to claim. All in all a very lame experience indeed. From start to finish a poor show on the side of the staff and a poor meal to boot. Steer far clear of this one if possible.

How is this possible? For my last night in England, I was going to have bangers 'n mash so onto Yelp I came to find the next closest pub. We ended up coming to the Pelton Arms and I was heartbroken to find that they didn't have it on their menu either. What the %#$@? The waitress quickly checked with the chef and thankfully, since he had all the ingredients, he was willing to prepare the dish for me! I'm so grateful that she took the initiative because those were some of the best bangers I've had. They were served over a wonderful green onion mash and topped with the typical grilled onion chutney. Absolutely fantastic and they definitely hit the spot! My husband opted for the special of the day, Chilli Con Carne which was incredibly spicy but I always love to see a grown man cry.
