There are really two parts to this establishment, one is a German restaurant that has great schnitzel and other German staples and the other is the Biergarten out back. If you are looking for an outdoor area to hang and drink with friends the Biergarten is your answer! They also have live music on weekends and some weeknights! I will note that on weekends the cover can get up to $20 and you'll have to wait in pretty long lines for a drink, but it is still a good option! Plus they have beers on draft that you can't really find elsewhere in Indy. read more

This was our third time coming to the Rathskeller. My only complaint is that it took quite some timeeeee to be serviced. We waited nearly 20minutes before one of the three waitresses to address our table. Once we were acknowledged. We knew what drinks and what food we wanted to order. As always, we started off with the stuffed mushrooms and French onion soup. Very delicious. The atmosphere where we were seated was very packed with tables. To the point where you have to squeeze through in order to not bump into someone's chair. We went with a few steaks. My fave being the one covered with grilled onions, peppers, and water chestnuts. It's extremely flavorful and one of the best steaks I've had in my life. It was accompanied by creamed spinach and mash. Rathskeller will remain one of our go to spots. read more

We went to Rathskeller to celebrate a friends birthday on Saturday night and the beer garden was packed! Very lively atmosphere with live music. It was very loud, so hard to have a conversation, but fun to be with friends and listen to the music. Lots of great drink options and cool atmosphere. Made it my mission this Devour Indy season to make it to the Rathskeller, if you ever get the chance it's worth the value to taste their menu! Place is huge and I made a reservation on a Friday, now knowing it probably was not necessary. Huge beer selection but limited draft menu to their own house beers- still really good. Free pretzels as your bread! First course, I got the stuffed mushrooms, cheese was nice and melty and mushrooms bitesize. Second Course, the stuffed NY Strip exclusive for Devour- perfectly cooked and tender. Third course, Apple Streusel a la mode, I was expecting more of a pastry puff but it was actually more like a crepe- still delicious! Worth the $35 I paid- otherwise they are a little pricey. Got excited about trying this historical German Restaurant while visiting Indianapolis. The place is beautiful and so authentic! Had taken a look at the menu before getting there and since I love Reuben sandwiches that's what I got! Very good.?Did not like the side of Spaetzle, I have been to Germany and Austria a few times and I am pretty sure this was not it. Not sure what it was, closer to noodles than Spaetzle. Beer was good. Went at 2pm probably not the best time as the place was empty and employees were not so welcoming. I am always looking for customer service on top of good food. Delightful dining experience from start to finish! I was able to get our party of 9 a same day reservation on a Wednesday. The inside was still decorated for Christmas which added to the wonderful ambiance. They have a decent bourbon selection which made my husband and brother in law happy. They give you complimentary hot soft pretzels which was a wonderful surprise! We also started with the bratwurst sampler, pesto French bread and stuffed mushrooms. All were fabulous. Everyone seemed very happy with their meals. I got the schnitzel with creamed spinach and spaetzle noodles. What a delight!!! A great ending is that they treated my father in law to a birthday dessert with a candle and we all sang happy birthday! He shared some bites of the German chocolate cheesecake. I stopped at the Rathskeller for a birthday dinner with a dear old friend(s). I ordered a draft Rathskeller amber 16 oz. beer to drink which was delicious. We had pretzels as appetizers which were just classic German and good. My entree was the schnitzel with potato soup, carrots, and mashed sweet potatoes. The meal was pretty good. Our waitress was super attentive, patient, friendly and accommodating. They have plenty of seating and a full bar. The restrooms were clean. Since we moved to Indy I've heard that we need to check out The Rathskeller. We are a mainly on a keto diet so going out to eat and finding something for us can be hard. Well, the hot wurst plate for 2 (an appetizer) was a perfect dinner for 2! This was a great price and more than enough food. The sausages were amazing, the mustards were amazing, and the cabbages were amazing! We ordered takeout and everything was ready. Be cautious though that there is a lot of liquid in this take out - I walked home and had some spillage of the red cabbage. I loved the inside of this place and will have to come back here to dine in and check out the bier garden. I like German food. The ambiance was nice with the historic architecture & mounted animals but you pay a premium for it. At $34 it felt a bit over priced. I ordered schnitzel & a side of Spaetzel. The spaetzel was a weird orange color. I was not a fan. The Shnitzel was fine. I've had German restraunts in chicago & wisc that were better. I would say It's about on par with house of Gerard in Kenosha WI in terms of quality & being over priced. I came in on a Saturday night & was told it was a 2 hour wait but was able to get a seat in the bar area quick since it was just one person. My wife and I had lunch here on Sunday. This was a great restaurant at one time but it's showing its age. Upon entering the restaurant (which is in the basement of the Athaneum), we were given a choice of sitting in the main restaurant (which seemed dark and old) or in the KellerBar (which seemed bright and airy). We chose the KellerBar. My wife and I both ordered the Schnitzel (which is pork not veal). She had sauerkraut and German potato salad with hers, I opted for the spaetzle. We thought the Schnitzel was good but not the best we've ever had. It's served with lemon juice rather than gravy. She liked her sauerkraut while I didn't really enjoy my spaetzle. I also ordered a cup of French onion soup. It was okay but I've had much better. First off, friendly service and an excellent waitress with a calm, caring demeanor. She always made sure we had what we needed. I think the fact we needed a reservation gave me the impression this place was more high end than it really was. Few people were here. All older folks. You can seat yourself at the bar or use your reservation for a table. Next, I would come here for the food. A beer and the ambiance, sure. But it seems the Germans no longer run this spot. The waitress told us they rent out the location. Even the steins are rented out. Not sure who runs the actual restaurant, but it sounds like it's gone downhill form other reviewers. Had the pretzels. Strong salt and I was not prepared for that spicy mustard. Maybe a stone ground milder mustard would be more appropriate for the demographic here. The bread rolls were fine, but I found the butter to be too cold. The bread was not warm enough to melt it. The salad was a small gathering of grass with a squirt of dressing. The plate was too small to mix in the dressing that laid on top of your salad like a friend egg. The Schnitzel (not pictured) was absolutely devoid of fat and thus flavor. What a tough piece of meat. My dish, the Rouladen, was the toughest beef this side of the Mississippi. The sauce didn't do much for me. The Red Cabbage didn't do much for me. I always felt like I wanted some onions in there. The Sauerkraut was mediocre. Honestly, I even find the Costco Sauerkraut to be more uplifting. This felt like I was slogging through a hardy meal in the dead of winter in the Gulag. That's too hardy for me. It lacked the personality of the food I've had in Frankfurt, Germany. Maybe I shouldn't be so harsh if I hadn't tried the sausages, but I'm not about this spot. This is the classic anchor of Mass Ave. The space is huge and the menu has been the same for as long as I can remember. Street parking is always available nearby because of the location. The meat is sourced from Claus Meat Market (formerly known as Klemm's) which is exactly where I buy the same stuff when I make my own at home. I always look at everything on the menu but I don't think there has ever been a time when I haven't settled on the Wurst Platte. It's the perfect German dish. They pair it with a selection of exceptional German beers. Many of the breweries are familiar but the individual drafts are not the commonly seen ones. The space is classic but there is a fine line between classic and old and it is moving towards old more and more these days. That is the only thing that keeps it from earning that fifth star. read more

Shortly thereafter, our server came to the table with our salads and let us know the kitchen was a bit backed up; this was not a problem, as we were taking the time to enjoy the evening, but we appreciated that the server made the effort to set that expectation of service time. We decided to order the chicken cordon bleu fingers as an appetizer - they are seriously amazing, I would come back just for those anytime! Soon after we finished those up, our meals came out. My wife got the Jägerschnitzel (not pictured) with sauerkraut and a potato pancake; I got the Kassler Ripchen with German potato salad and spätzle. Everything was delicious. While the dishes are somewhat pricey, the portions are huge (we each ended up taking home half of our food) and everything is of excellent quality... there is a reason this restaurant has been around for so long! To top off the evening, we decided to try out their bread pudding. It was made with white chocolate and raspberries, and it was very tasty! Truly a perfect way to close out the evening. Rothskeller, it's my second visit. First time I came here at night time with office dinner party so was jot able to explore the place and we had a great dinning experience. Today I realized how big is this place. They have huge dinning area divided in 3 areas. They also have a outdoor seating called " Biergarten" and that area is huge too with a full fledged bar. Loved my experience here and this place is for sure a must visit place and I am going to come back again. They dont have dedicated parking and you need to street park here. I absolutely love the Rathskeller. It's my go-to restaurant during Indy's annual Devour Indy. My husband and I went last night and it was once again, wonderful! The restaurant was socially distanced and every employee I saw was wearing masks appropriately. We both ordered variations of schnitzel and large beers! You MUST get the German chocolate cheesecake! Always a good time when I visit here. This year, we went with a group of people and were put in the events room. Our waiter was great. Unfortunately, they ran out of rouladen which is the only thing I wanted (pregnancy) but they had half portion. I'm a long-time Rathskeller fan from waaaayyyy back, but my visit last week left a bit to be desired. My kiddo and I came in for a weeknight dinner. It's too bad kids are no longer allowed in the biergarten (I seem to think they were awhile back, but perhaps I'm mistaken...) That's my favorite area, although I also love the indoor bar as well. While the building is BEAUTIFUL and the family-friendly restaurant section certainly boasts authentic German ambiance, it's just not quite as fun as hanging out at an outdoor picnic table with live music. This is one of the few places in Indy where you can get real-deal Gaffel Kolsch beer (in a bottle), and that's what I always order to drink. We also dug the bread basket - a couple rolls and a big warm soft pretzel served with some of the spiciest mustard in town. For food, we split a plain schnitzel order -- a pounded, herby breaded pork cutlet served with lemon slices. It was.... ok. Almost had a sweetish flavor. (I'd ordered a plain schnitzel, but our server first brought us a jagerschnitzel with mushrooms and sauce, which I knew my kiddo wouldn't eat and had to send back.) We each got a iceberg lettuce side salad - nothing fancy, but fine. I'm usually a fan of the hot German potato salad, but the potatoes seemed a little hard and undercooked. The red cabbage was tasty. All in all, the food was.... just ok. Fine, but not great. Service was thoughtful --- one woman delivered our bread basket quickly after we sat down after hearing me tell my kiddo he could get a soft pretzel, and helped me find a place to charge my phone for a few minutes. Had lunch here in the beer garden. Everything was spectacular. We had the Bavarian Plate, kielbasa/brat plate. Food came out hot. Full of flavour. Not spicy. Sauerkraut was mild but full of flavour. Truly a nice surprise. Side salad was simple which we appreciate for a big meal coming. Mashed potatoes were spot on. The gravy was rich and perfect amount. Server, was fantastic. My husband and I enjoyed a pretzel and beer until our friends arrived. We moved inside to eat dinner because it was hard to hear our friends talking with the music playing. Everyone at our table got the pork tenderloin sandwich. My husband thoroughly enjoyed it. He almost always orders a pork tenderloin if a place has it on their menu. However, I just didn't like it. I'm not sure if it was the breading or the pork itself but I barely at half. Someone else at our table didn't eat much of hers either.
