My review of this train ride is only 3 stars because I am comparing it to other train rides in the area vs. the price. I have no complaints about anything that went on during the experience. With that said, let's start from the beginning! Finding the entrance to the event was a little hard the first time, because it was also very dark outside, but it's located on the first street when you enter old sac, at the end near the train museum. After entering the tent, the decor inside of the train entrance is BEAUTIFUL and magical. There is a cute little gift shop and lots of photo opportunities. You wait in a line to enter the train and they give a cute little performance before you enter which seems like they are setting you up for a story to continue on the train, and there are fireworks. Once you enter the train you sit on couches that comfortably fit 2 adults, there is no table in between so you are facing the other chairs. They provide you with hot cocoa and a cookie during the ride but there is no other food or drinks you can order. The staff walks around with a book but don't read it to you, i think the intercom was playing the story but it was so loud on the train i am not 100% sure. Santa does come around and say high to the kids, if you ask him for a picture then he will give one to you, and they pass out cute little bells. Half was through the train ride if you look outside, you pass a little set up of the North Pole and they have staff dressed up as elves and Santa waiving at you. All the staff were friendly, and the kids enjoyed the train. The reason my rating was not higher is because this train cost more than the other one I have been on, but they do less. The other train has a performance to watch while you ride, and they read you the story that the train is themed after. They also have staff come around who are singing and playing guitar, and they have tables, and crafts and games. The hot cocoa they give you is in a souvenir cup you get to keep, you can order additional food and drinks for both adults and kids, and they give you a whole plate of cookies per table. Also, the Santa stops and talks to each kid and collects their x-mas lists and just spends more time per family. The ride itself is longer, although there is nothing to see outside the train, because there is so much going on inside. at the station where you board/exit there is a Christmas themed play area. Overall, I wish for the price that this train did more like its competitors BUT if you have never been on another train then I am sure your family will have an amazing time!

Your train awaits you!

One of the most magical experiences that I have been able to enjoy with my family. I had no Idea what to expect but having watched the movie a few times I had somewhat of an idea what I would probably experience. You should get there at least 30 minutes early and remember there are no bathrooms on the train. Just a fair warning for your little one's potty training. When you walk up to the entrance the experience begins and if this is your first time just ask questions if you are confused. The intro, walking up to the train, finding your place, and every aspect of the experience was made with magic and love, and you can feel it. The price was perfect for what we got and hope to be able to go many more times with our other kids. 3-10 is the perfect age for kids going but everyone will enjoy this experience. I do not want to say much more because the unknown is part of the fun.

Santa!

Would be 5 stars if it wasn't quite so expensive. Overall it was a wonderful experience! The hot chocolate dancing was a highlight and so was the Christmas carols! Definitely was just what we needed to be put in the Christmas spirit!

My review is focusing on this specifically, due to the significance of the internment in my family's life. Information specific to the book / this event: The Ireichō is a book listing every person of Japanese ancestry incarcerated in the World War II camps. The Ireichō is currently making its way across various stops in the US, allowing family members and those that knew the incarcerated to stamp their loved ones names as a way to honor them and what they endured and their strength. After the tour, the book will be gifted to the Japanese American National Museum (in LA). The stamping of the Ireichō occurred inside the main entrance of the museum, and the museum graciously allowed those stamping the book to tour the rest of the museum. Museum staff and the staff hosting the event were very welcoming. The museum itself has both long-term and short-term exhibits, listed on their website. It's fitting that they currently have a temporary exhibit at this time called, "Kokoro: The Story of Sacramento's Lost Japantown", from December 20, 2025 to March 29, 2026. If you're interested in some of CA's history, it makes for a nice stop. It is Downtown Sac, so it's all paid street parking or lots in the vicinity. There is a lot right across the street.

Incidentally, Dragon's Gate won the 1994 Newbery Honor and the 1994 Boston Globe-Horn Book Award. The wife and I read it along with them, and it was really eye-opening and historically educational, and it reminded me of our several visits to the California State Railroad Museum in the past and what a gem the RR museum is and how lucky we are to have it here in Sacramento. We've visited a few times before, most recently I think we came on a Free Museum Weekend. The RR museum has a lot to offer, there are many full sized locomotives, railroad trains, and cabooses. We saw the Union Pacific Railroad, the Southern Pacific, the Santa Fe, the Sacramento Northern, and then we walked through Dining Car No. 1474 with all the artifacts inside of what it would look like back in the day, with all the fancy china dishes and cups, plus fine silverware and all the upscale furniture since traveling by train was expensive in the old days (still kind of pricey nowadays). There was also a very cool and honorable display/exhibit about the history of the railroad in California and the contribution of Chinese-American railroad workers, many of whom gave their lives to build the transcontinental railroad. There was some Gold Rush history exhibits/displays also. So that's just the first floor. Upstairs there are more exhibits, but of model trains of all kinds and even several play areas for little kids to have all kinds of railroad related hands-on fun. All in all, this is still a cool museum and definitely a must-visit if you've not stopped by and it's still fun to come visit even if you've been here before as you'll surely discover something you missed last time, or learn something new that they've added.

There were a lot of comic strips to view. I really like how they were blown up and not newspaper sized, because they were easier to read that way. I wish the screens would show all of A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and What Have We Learned Charlie Brown instead of just the Red Baron excepts. It eventually got repetitive as I was reading the strips. I like how they have a cafe inside the museum. There was no food available within walking distance that I could see. I had the tuna melt. It was fresh and very good.

It starts out with carriages, and the earliest vehicles they have and then sort of moves along in a timeline. I really like order and organization so I appreciated that. Unfortunately just over halfway (or maybe closer to 3/4) through the museum, that all goes away. It becomes this really messy, unorganized, mishmash of cars. It was actually a little jarring for me how unorganized it becomes, so at a certain point I just began walking through quickly to leave. There was a field trip going on during my visit so the children's area and the first few sections of the museum were really loud and full. There were lots of kids, some playing in the kids area, some inside of the vehicles jumping and screaming, and I even saw one climbing under the velvet ropes. I love that they have kids come and that there is educational outreach here. The issues I experienced probably had more to do with the chaperones, than with the museum itself so I am not taking a star away for that, I just think people should know that they do have large groups of children visiting and even have a play corner for them so this is an issue they could encounter as well. Overall, I really liked the museum, even though it's smaller than many automobile museums I have been to before. I read that multiple vehicles were on loan and was told that some of the collection rotates, so if you are a regular it's probably nice to know that there will be different things to see when you visit. I was particularly drawn to a Two-Tone chocolatey 1933 Lincoln sedan just a few minutes into my visit here. I came back to look at it multiple times. It's gorgeous. The dusty lavender 1949 Chevrolet suburban "Agridolce" was another stunner. Very unique and I loved the color. Probably my favorite car in the collection though was the Cherry red 1953 Hudson convertible. It was cool to see in person and it even had a hornet emblem. I was enamored and probably took 30 pictures of it. There were also tons of volunteers/docents there during my visit. There must have been at least 7 older gentlemen who clearly love cars and at least two of them came up to chat with me about different vehicles and tell some stories. It's great to be able to ask questions and learn little factoids in that way. I will definitely be back to visit and see some of their new additions soon.
